Fulham Boss Backs Benitez to Succeed at Chelsea

Chelsea take on Fulham at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday evening and Cottagers manager Martin Jol has had some words of encouragement for under-fire Blues boss Rafael Benitez.

The Spaniard was made interim manager after last week’s sacking of Roberto Di Matteo and was booed and jeered during his first game in charge, a 0-0 draw with Manchester City, on Sunday.

But Jol has backed Benitez to succeed in West London, claiming the hostility will stop as soon as he starts to get results.

According to the Fulham & Hammersmith Chronicle, the Dutchman told his Friday press conference:

He [Di Matteo] was much appreciated there because he did well as a player and, I think, he did well as a manager. It [Di Matteo’s sacking] was not a decision that everyone could understand so you get this sort of thing. But Rafa Benitez is a true professional and he's been in the business a long time, so he will be tough enough.

Many Chelsea fans are unhappy with some comments Benitez made about the Blues and their supporters when he was at the helm at Liverpool. Jol said:

I don't think I've experienced it before in my career, but of course he was at Liverpool, a big club, and probably said a few things about Chelsea. I have done that in the past, because you are like a chameleon, you know. You get the colours of the club you are in and that is what he did. But I think a couple of wins and he will win them over. Hopefully it won't start [against Fulham].

Chelsea will be boosted by the fact Fulham are without winger Bryan Ruiz through injury and centre-half Brede Hangeland, who is still suspended for tonight’s clash at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues welcome Gary Cahill back into the squad after he missed Sunday’s game against Man City, but Daniel Sturridge, Frank Lampard and John Terry are still unavailable.
