Louisville Basketball: Why Cardinals Will Win National Championship

Louisville has everything it needs to win the national championship this year, no matter who the Cardinals play next.

The Cardinals (33-5, 14-4 Big East) will play underdog Wichita State in the Final Four. If (or should I say, "when") they beat the Shockers, they will face the winner between Michigan and Syracuse in the national title game.

The Cardinals suffered a big blow after losing backup guard Kevin Ware to a broken leg in the Elite Eight against Duke, but they still have enough to win the whole thing.

It starts with balance. Louisville ranked 23rd in the nation in offensive efficiency headed into its matchup with Duke, via TeamRankings.com. It ranked third in defensive efficiency.

The Cardinals also rank second in opponents' turnover rate. Beyond superior on-the-ball defender Peyton Siva (2.2 steals per game), Russ Smith, Gorgui Dieng and Chase Behanan have all averaged 1.4 steals or more this season.

Duke shot 36.5 percent from the floor against Louisville in the Elite Eight. Seth Curry, who had dropped a combined 72 points in his past three games, scored 12 points on 3-of-9 shooting while he was constantly badgered by Siva and Co.

The Cardinals could get out-rebounded down the stretch. They could stop hitting their shots and fail to get to the free-throw line. But even with the emergence of freshman forward Mitch McGary, I don't think a strong rebounding squad like Michigan would out-rebound Louisville too much (if at all) and—seriously—when was the last time the Cardinals didn't get to the free-throw line a lot (they shot 40 percent against Syracuse in the Big East title game, but attempted 36 free throws)?

Michigan figures to be Louisville's greatest test if the Cardinals meet the Wolverines in the national championship game. The Wolverines faced a similar team in Florida in that the Gators were a balanced squad, but the one thing Florida didn't have that Louisville does is consistency. The Cardinals have won their last 14 games, while the Gators suffered losses to Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee, Kentucky and Ole Miss down the stretch in the regular season.

Any way you slice it, Rick Pitino and the Cardinals have the upper hand to win it all this season.

Sidney Crosby Takes Slapshot To The Face

The Pittsburgh Penguins debuted their new and improved roster today against the New York Islanders, but it took just 90 seconds for Sidney Crosby to leave the game after taking a Brooks Orpik slapshot to the face. If you watch the replay closely, you can see a couple of Sid?s teeth go flying before he is knocked down to the ice. This is the third time in the last year that Crosby has taken a puck to the face while playing the Islanders. The Penguins have reported that he will not return to the game. Clarence Seedorf faces 12-match ban

Clarence Seedorf is facing a suspension of up to 12 matches in Brazil after being red carded for leaving the field the wrong way following a substitution in the Rio de Janeiro state championship last weekend.

Brazil's sports tribunal charged the Dutch midfielder with unethical behavior and being disrespectful to the referee during the incident in Botafogo's 2-1 win over Madureira on Sunday.

Seedorf was heading toward Botafogo's bench in stoppage time when the referee stopped him and pointed toward the nearest sideline to save time, but Seedorf refused and left the other way.

Referee Philip Georg Bennet said in his post-match report that Seedorf called his decision a joke, and that the player said he would leave ''anywhere he wanted.''

A sneak peek at the Williams sisters documentary

Here's a sneak peek at the documentary about Venus and Serena Williams that they reportedly weren't too happy with. The sisters objected to the way father, Richard, ended up coming across in the film. Not exactly sure what that means, but I sure can't wait to find out.

The Williams sisters have been notoriously private over the years, barely letting anyone outside their immediate circles into their lives. But, based on this preview, fans might finally a good look.

The documentary will be available on demand April 4 and opening in theaters on May 10.

Clayton Kershaw to sign extension with Dodgers for 8 years, $200 million, according to reports

Clayton Kershaw will be extended for 8 years and $200 million by the Dodgers in the coming days, according to Mike Petriello.
None of that seems all that interesting any longer, because I can reliably report that Clayton Kershaw is going to sign an eight-year, $200m extension with the Dodgers, possibly as soon as tonight. If so, that would blow away all of us ? myself included ? who thought that $200m was an unattainable goal, though clearly deals since then have impacted that.
No word yet on the structure of the deal, but if it begins in 2013, as I expect it would, then it would cover Kershaw?s age 25-32 seasons. It?s a ludicrous amount of money, but that is exactly the timeframe I want a pitcher, and Kershaw?s obviously the kind of pitcher (and person) you?d want to lock up for that.
It?s not official yet, but I expect it to be in the next 24-48 hours, if not sooner. Much more to come, no doubt.
Most of us speculated that the sky is the limit on his extension, but $200 million war...

City reaffirms interest in Cavani

Manchester City's defensive coach Angelo Gregucci has reaffirmed the club's interest in Napoli striker Edinson Cavani.

Mancini has previously expressed an admiration for Cavani, who is regarded as one of the most potent forwards in world football.

Napoli have recently insisted it will cost 60million to persuade them to sell, although the Uruguay international said he is unsure where he will be playing next season.

Chelsea and Real Madrid are other clubs to have been linked with Cavani, and Gregucci says there is no "exclusive" deal for City to sign the player.

"He is an important player and any club which wants to be better must look at players like him," Gregucci told Radio Crc.

"Mancini has expressed his appreciation for Cavani, but there is no exclusive for City."

Reports have suggested that a deal for Cavani would prompt the summer departure of Edin Dzeko, but Gregucci would not be drawn on whether the Bosnian striker would be sold.

He added: "Dzeko is a

Tony Romo could be a free agent in 2014

We have spent our fair share of time scratching our head as to why the Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones won?t relent and hire a general manager.

There a multiple reasons why they want to get that done.

Gutsiest Moments of Kobe Bryant's LA Lakers Career

Shortly after spraining his ankle against the Atlanta Hawks on March 13, Kobe Bryant was listed as "out indefinitely" (via Mike Trudell).

The injury appeared gruesome and figured to sideline Bryant for a week or two, dashing the Los Angeles Lakers' playoff hopes in the process.

However, in typical Mamba fashion, Bryant returned (per The Associated Press) two days later for the Lakers' next game against the Indiana Pacers.

Despite only being able to play 12 minutes against the Pacers, Bryant's return displayed the dichotomy of his gutsy decisions.

On one hand, Kobe's determination to play through countless injuries over the years has been admirable. On the other hand, risking further injury is an unfortunate evil that accompanies such drive and determination.

With images of Bryant writhing in pain on the floor of Philips Arena still fresh in our minds, it's time to revisit the most gutsy and reckless performances of Kobe's career.

The Triumph in 2000

The 2000 NBA Finals pitted the Lakers against the Eastern Conference champion Pacers, a series in which L.A. ultimately emerged victorious by a margin of four games to two.

What many have forgotten is that Bryant, who sprained his ankle in game two of that series, actually wound up missing game three.

The fact that the injury was severe enough to cause Bryant to sit out a game during the Finals gives you an indication of just how much pain he was fighting off. However, Bryant returned in game four and scored 28 points on 51.9 percent shooting en route to a 120-118 overtime victory.

Although he was overshadowed by teammate Shaquille O'Neal, Kobe's perseverance was one of the cornerstones of the Lakers' success that propelled them to victory.

As it turns out, former Indiana Pacer and current ESPN contributor Jalen Rose has admitted to jutting his leg out under Bryant in an attempt to injure him. Speculation remains about whether Atlanta Hawks guard Dahntay Jones fouled Bryant with malicious intent (via ESPN).

2008 Playoff Run with a Weak Back

Given the incredible amount of injuries Bryant has incurred over the years, it's easy to overlook the 2008 NBA Finals as one of Kobe's gutsiest performances.

The Lakers fell to the Boston Celtics in the 2008 Finals, which is likely why many choose to forget what Bryant accomplished while playing with an injured back.

On the verge of turning 30 years old, Bryant propelled the Lakers to a spot in the Finals, sweeping the Denver Nuggets while disposing of the San Antonio Spurs and Utah Jazz in five and six games, respectively.

During the 2008 playoffs, Bryant averaged 30.1 points per game, the fourth-highest mark of his career for one postseason. Bryant also shot 47.9 percent from the field, which ranks second only to his 49.7 percent shooting throughout the 2006 playoffs.

Knee Problems Hamper Bryant

Rather than a game or series, let's now turn our attention to an entire season in which Kobe had to battle through injury.

During the 2010-11 season, Bryant managed to play in all 82 games despite barely practicing thanks to the degenerative condition of his knees.

To combat his fear of missing even one game with balky knees, Bryant and Phil Jackson agreed to a maintenance plan which minimized Kobe's time on the practice court, instead focusing all of his attention on game days.

In an interview with Peter Vecsey of the New York Post, Bryant shed some light on his difficult situation:

You know how competitive and combative I am on the court, he said. There’s nothing I like better than to practice. In fact, I like practice more than the games, because I get to go at my teammates hard. That’s when you find out what they’re made of, how much you can push some to get the most out of ’em, and how you have to back off others so you don’t lose ’em.

So, in order to protect my knee and avoid a situation like last year, we decided before the season to sacrifice the team’s intensity by minimizing wear and tear as much as possible.

According to Basketball-Reference, Bryant played just 33.9 minutes per game during the 2010-11 season, the third-lowest mark of his career.

Bryant's drive to maintain a presence on the floor was exemplary of what a veteran leader should be, but it's hard not to think that he put himself at risk of further injury.

A season full of risky performances ended with Bryant and the Lakers being swept by the Dallas Mavericks in the second round of the NBA playoffs.

Shortly after being eliminated, Kobe traveled to Germany to receive platelet-rich plasma therapy, which has worked wonders on his longevity.

Kobe Battles Wrist Ailment

From the jump, it was clear that the lockout-shortened season of 2011-12 was going to be a difficult one for Kobe and the Lakers.

Bryant suffered a torn wrist ligament shortly before the start of the season, but he found a way to return four days later to play in the Lakers' opener against the Chicago Bulls.

Although the Lakers wound up losing to the Bulls 88-87 on Christmas Day, Bryant led all scorers with 28 points, setting the tone for what would end up being an arduous season.

During the 2011-12 campaign, Bryant played in 58 of a possible 66 regular season contests, and played nearly five minutes more per game than he did the previous year.

The Oklahoma City Thunder disposed of the Lakers in five games in the Western Conference semifinals, but gutsy performances out of Bryant wound up being commonplace throughout the truncated season.

Itsmyluckyday, Shanghai Bobby and Orb Face off in the Florida Derby

The big three will face off at the $1 million G1 Florida Derby this Saturday at Gulfstream Park. But it's not the Miami Heat's big three of Lebron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh.

G3 Holy Bull Winner Itsmyluckyday, G1 BC Juvenile winner Shanghai Bobby and G2 Fountain of Youth winner Orb, are the big three headlining Florida's top Kentucky Derby prep race.

But they will not run alone in the race. Seven other contenders will challenge, making this a fine field of 10 that will go to the starting gate on Saturday looking for the 170 Kentucky Derby qualifying points that are up for grabs in the Florida Derby.

The Florida Derby is part of the last tier of races on the the new "Road to the Kentucky Derby" points series that determines starters for the Kentucky Derby on May 4 at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky. It awards 100-40-20-10 points to the top four finishers in the race.

The points in this race will be of the utmost importance for the morning line favorite Itsmyluckyday, who currently sits in 20th position in the points standings. The 10 points he has were thanks to his win in the G3 Holy Bull.

Itsmyluckyday comes from winning the G3 Holy Bull in a track-record performance. He earned a 104 Beyer figure for that effort and had earned a 102 on his previous start—a win in the Gulftstream Park Derby on Jan. 1.

Those two Beyer figures are the two best for anybody in the race. Shanghai Bobby earned a 100 for his second place in the G3 Holy Bull.

Itsmyluckyday is a horse that can keep up with the pace in stalking mode. He likes to take it up to the leaders around the far turn and finishes up well which could come in handy again on Saturday.

In the G3 Holy Bull he caught Shanghai Bobby and bid clear in the final sixteenth for the two-length win. Trainer Ed Plesa Jr must be pleased with the way he has been training well for the race.

Jockey Elvis Trujillo, who guided him to the win in the G3 Holy Bull, gets the return mount.

Shanghai Bobby drew the rail again for this race, just like he did at the G3 Holy Bull. From that spot he was sent to the lead by Rosie Napravnik and was game in defeat.

It will be a very important decision at the start for Napravnik. Shanghai Bobby will need to break quickly to avoid getting pinned inside on the run to the start of the first turn. But with Merit Man on the race, do you go for the lead or try to run just off the leader.

Logic for Napravnik would dictate to let Merit Man clear him and take the lane just outside of him. But with Itsmyluckyday starting from post three, Trujillo could opt to keep Shanghai Bobby pinned on the inside.

Trainer Todd Pletcher has Shanghai Bobby ready with steady workouts up to the race. The question with the BC Juvenile winner has always been if he can get to the distance, and must prove he can to contend for the  win here.

Orb is the only horse in the Florida Derby field assured of a Kentucky Derby berth. His 50 points came thanks to the impressive way he ran down Violence to win the G2 Fountain of Youth.

He earned a 97 Beyer figure for that effort, which was the third consecutive race he made a sizable improvement in those figures. He is still improving and has not lost any step with three consistently good workouts for this race.

John Velazquez was aboard for his G2 Fountain of Youth win and gets the return mount. Expect him to use the post position six to follow Itsmyluckyday and Shanghai Bobby on the clear and repeat his winning strategy of the G2 Fountain of Youth.

The Shug-McGaughey-trained colt is one of only two proven winners at nine furlongs in this race. And he is regally bred to run all day.

Frac Daddy was a close second to Uncaptured last year in the G2 Kentucky Jockey Club. He finished a distant sixth to Itsmyluckyday and Shanghai Bobby in the G3 Holy Bull.

He grabbed a quarter in that race and hasn't run since while recovering from a throat ulcer. Considering all those mitigating factors, and his off the charts workouts for the race you have to consider him at least for your exotics.

But if the Frac Daddy of the mornings shows up in the afternoon on Saturday, the big three better look out. Corey Lanerie get the call aboard for the race, David Cohen rode him in his previous three starts.

Merit Man gets the blinkers-off, but his best chances are playing catch-me-if-you-can. He has too much speed not to use it here. Jockey Kent Desormeaux will get the call and will have to nurse that speed since his horse has never gone beyond seven furlongs.

Are You Kidding Me will be making his dirt debut. He has run very well with respectable company, but all seven starts have been either on synthetic or turf.

At least he did an excellent workout for the race Tuesday at the Payson Park Training Center on dirt. He ran a best-of-12 for the four-furlongs distance that day with a time of 48.20. He would still need to improve to contend.

Pontiff, Indy's Illusion and Narvaez round up the field.

Picks

Orb looks like the winner here. This horse just keeps improving and has the opportunity to have the best trip in the race. Expect him to run with Itsmyluckyday and take him down in a duel just like he did with Violence at the G2 Fountain of Youth.

Frac Daddy will make a run at them but will be just third best. Shanghai Bobby will have a decent run but will not be able to keep up with my top three picks.

Place - Itsmyluckyday

Show - Frac Daddy

Honorable Mention - Shanghai Bobby

WWE: Triple H Is the Best Thing Going for the WWE Right Now

In the words of CM Punk in his famous pipe bomb speech, "I'd like to think that maybe this company will be better after Vince McMahon is dead. But the fact is, it's gonna get taken over by his idiotic daughter and his doofus son-in-law..."

"Doofus son-in-law" obviously refers to Triple H and his growing power and authority behind the scenes of the WWE. However, I could not disagree more with Punk, because Triple H is currently the best thing going for the company.

Currently, Triple H is still a part-time wrestler, but he is also the Executive Vice President of Talent and Live Events. His job is to oversee the talent relations and talent development departments, training of wrestlers and recruitment. In addition to his talent responsibilities, Triple H has worked as a director and producer of the creative angles and storylines of the WWE.

Triple H has had one of the most successful professional wrestling careers of all time, which includes eight WWE Championships, five World Heavyweight Championships, five Intercontinental Championships and three Tag Team Championships.

While his in-ring action has been limited to special appearances in the past several years, he is still a major draw and features in one of the top three matches at WrestleMania this year.

If you combine his performances inside the squared circle with the impact he is making behind the scenes, there is no doubt Triple H is the most valuable asset the company has right now.

Triple H is the perfect person to take over running the WWE. Triple H is obviously a household name, which makes the transition from Vince McMahon much easier. Had the new boss been a new character or person we weren't familiar with, the chances of the WWE Universe accepting him would be less likely.

Also, Triple H is enough of a veteran to understand the ins and the outs of the business. He was also around during the Attitude Era, which is seen by many as the Golden Age of professional wrestling. He is also only 43 years old, so he is young enough to keep up with what is current and what the new members of the WWE Universe want.

When Triple H was getting started in professional wrestling, he was trained by Killer Kowalski. Now Triple H has a big hand in training up-and-coming talent to be WWE superstars.

So far, he has made some significant changes that should improve the company.

According to The Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t WrestleZone.com), Triple H has implemented a new system that will help young talent become stronger on the mic. Instead of memorizing full lines, he is teaching the developmental talents to work with bullet points.

This change in how superstars will cut promos will allow them to show their own personality. It will also provide some diversity among superstars.

Triple H is also responsible for the influx of the new talent from NXT. We have seen superstars like Ryback, Antonio Cesaro, Damien Sandow, Big E Langston and the three members of The Shield have significant roles in the WWE recently.

The future of the company relies on the young talent that is going to be the next generation of superstars. Triple H has pretty much complete control over the developmental talent, so the success of the new superstars is a testament to what he is doing with them.

Triple H also had his hands in the recent resurgence of the tag team division. At its peak, the WWE had popular tag teams like the Hardy Boyz, Edge and Christian, the New Age Outlaws and the Dudley Boys.

In recent years, the WWE had abandoned the importance of tag team action, but now teams like Team Hell No, the Prime Time Players and Rhodes Scholars have brought back the relevance of the division. While it is not on the level it once was, the tag team competition is on its way up.

While Punk may have taken a shot at him in his infamous pipe bomb speech, Triple H has reportedly supported longer title reigns to help make the belts prestigious again. This became apparent as Punk held the WWE Championship for over 430 days.

After years of refusing to accept the offer, Bruno Sammartino is finally going be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame. Apparently, Triple H was the person who was able to convince the legend to accept the invitation at last. This shows the influence Triple H has among the legends of the company as well as the young talent.

Triple H has made a huge impact on the WWE both in and out of the ring, which makes him the best thing going for the company. As he makes more successful decisions, he will gain more power, which would seem to be a good thing.

If you are a fan of the WWE, you have to be comfortable with where the company will be with Triple H, once Vince McMahon is no longer in the picture.

Wisconsin has questions to answer at QB

When quarterback Curt Phillips took the snaps in January's Rose Bowl, Wisconsin became the first team to play in three consecutive BCS bowl games using three different starting quarterbacks. It's a sign that the Badgers were used to having success despite constant change.

It's a theory that will be tested again this season. Not only does Wisconsin have a brand new head coach, offensive coordinator and six new assistant coaches, the Badgers have a bunch of quarterbacks vying to start the season opener on Aug. 31.

Wisconsin was one of nine schools to start at least three different quarterbacks in 2012 - Danny O'Brien, Joel Stave and Phillips - and was the only school of the group that finished with a winning record. But after back-to-back seasons of at least 10 victories, the Badgers' 8-6 season was a far cry from success.

''It came out time and time again that 8-6, they don't feel like that's a tremendous year for them,'' coach Gary Andersen said. ''They f

Heat vs. Bulls: Standout Players for Chicago in Stunning Win over Heat

The short-handed Chicago Bulls hosted the red-hot Miami Heat, who were riding the wave of a 27-game win streak.

Not only were the Bulls without the services of Derrick Rose and Rip Hamilton, both Joakim Noah and Marco Belinelli were out of the lineup as well.

Despite the absences of several players, the Bulls squeaked out a stunning 101-97 win over the Heat, snapping the second-longest winning streak in league history.

Chicago struggled with its ball-handling in stretches, turning the ball over 18 times, while allowing 54 points in the paint.

However, thanks to a 43-31 edge on the glass, combined with 27 assists on 40 field goals, the Bulls had just enough to cool off the Heat.

Here is a quick look at my most valuable players for the Bulls in one of the team’s biggest wins of the season.

Is Jarome Iginla to Boston Deal Complete?

Following months of speculation, it looks as if Calgary Flames captain and future Hall of Famer Jarome Iginla could be headed to the Boston Bruins. Although no official announcement has been made, the signs seem to say that Iginla has played his final game in a Flames uniform.

On Monday, Iginla notified Flames GM Jay Feaster that he would approve a trade to Boston, Pittsburgh, Chicago or Los Angeles. Its no coincidence that the list included the last four Stanley Cup Champions, as the fading star seeks to engrave his name on hockey's most holy relic.

In the wake of Pittsburgh's acquisition of veteran winger Brendan Morrow, Boston has become the odds-on favorite to land the 36-year-old star to jump start their sputtering offense. The Bruins hopes enjoyed another boost with the LA Kings dropping out of the race, according to Gary Lawless of the Winnipeg Free Press.

Amidst the swirling rumors, the Calgary Flames made the telling decision to hold their captain out of Wednesday night's clash with the Colorado Avalanche, perhaps implying that a deal is at hand.

TSN's Bob Mckenzie offered the following take on Iginla's surprise absence from the lineup:

I'm told Jarome Iginla will not be dressed tonight vs. COL but that doesn't necessarily mean deal is imminent or close. Protecting the asset

— Bob McKenzie (@TSNBobMcKenzie) March 27, 2013

It is widely believed that Calgary is seeking a first-round pick and two prospects in exchange for the face of their franchise, whose contract expires at the end of the season. So it is noteworthy that several Boston prospects also found themselves scratched on Wednesday.

According to Mckenzie, NHL ready defenseman Matt Bartkowski was scratched from Boston's pivotal Northeast Division clash with Montreal, and top prospect Alexander Khokhlachev was also omitted from the Providence Bruins lineup.

Could it be that Boston GM Peter Chiarelli has agreed or at least offered to send a first-round pick, Bartkowski and Khokhlachev to Calgary in exchange for Iginla?

Such an offer would certainly demand consideration from Jay Feaster. Though he may have preferred to acquire promising young netminder Malcolm Subban, who was declared off-limits by Peter Chiarelli on Wednesday according to CSNNE's Joe Haggerty, Khokhlachev is an eye catching young talent.

The 19-year-old forward was selected 40th overall in the second round of the 2011 NHL draft and has split time between the OHL, KHL and AHL over the past few years, making plenty of time to represent his home nation of Russia as one half of a lethal partnership with Nail Yakupov.

Though a brief stint with the KHL's Spartak Moscow last fall proved difficult for the youngster, a return to the Windsor Spitfires of the OHL saw the high-octane winger post 48 points in 29 games before answering the call of the Providence Bruins.

"Koko," as he is known, has the highest offensive upside of any Boston prospect and looks to be a top-six forward down the road.

Meanwhile, Matt Bartkowski is prepared to make an impact almost immediately. The 24-year-old former Ohio State Buckeye has seen NHL ice 10 times in his blossoming career while enjoying three strong seasons with the Providence Bruins.

The physical Pittsburgh-native lacks elite upside, but has the ability to contribute at both ends of the rink and he should be ready for a regular NHL role by next season, if not next week.

If Jarome Iginla is indeed Beantown-bound, he should make an immediate impact. Though the Bruins have maintained their usual defensive standards, the offense has disappointed at times this season.

Perhaps the addition of the gritty and experienced forward, who has more than 500 goals and 1,000 points to his name, is just what Claude Julien's bruising bunch needs to hoist their second Stanley Cup in three seasons.

Michael Crabtree: Kaepernick trusted me more

Just when you though Alex Smith?s exportation process from the San Francisco 49ers to the Kansas City Chiefs was going to go off without even a subliminal diss, comes well?a subliminal diss.

Williams Says Capriati Happy She Lost

It just keeps getting worse for Jennifer Capriati. Since 1994 Capriati has made headlines not only for her stunning tennis achievements, but for legal problems, drug issues and now a domestic incident. On Friday the Olympic gold medalist was charged with stalking and battery, although she has not been arrested. Police claim she punched her ex-boyfriend on Valentines Day. Now Serena Williams has posted on Twitter that Capriati was happy when Serena lost in Australia! According to Sports Illustrated's Ben Rothenberg, Serena was asked after her third round victory in Miami whether she had heard from Capriati. "No. Last I heard she was happy I lost in Australia. So yeah I don't really know. Shocking, but yeah?" Serena did not elaborate, choosinginstead to wish Capriati the best. "I always tell her mom to tell her I say hi. I honestly hope the best for her. I hope she's OK. She has a good heart ...I have always been really nice to her, though, and I see ...

Bowyer, Gordon going opposite ways

Jeff Gordon was a huge surprise at Charlotte Motor Speedway on Saturday night.

He qualified 13th, and he and his Hendrick Motorsports team seemed fairly happy with their car in the two practices Saturday at the track.

Then in the race, he really searched and struggled most of the night. He ended up with an 18th-place finish. That kind of just wiped out, points-wise, those three awesome finishes he had in a row since that bad finish at Chicagoland Speedway.

Now with five down and five to go, he finds himself 50 points out of the lead, ninth in the points. That's way too big of a mountain to climb.

Clint Bowyer is the inspiration for drivers deeper in the Chase for the Sprint Cup because he headed into the Charlotte race 40 points out and he chopped 12 points off with his win Saturday night. He's now 28 back and in fourth place. But, for example, look right now at Martin Truex Jr., who is seventh and 49 points out. That's more than a full race.

So not only is he more than a full race out, he

Ski Jump Streaker Slips and Bites It During Epic Run on Course

Warning: Video contains naked streaker butt and flashes of snow-shrunk genitalia.

Because the only thing better than a streaker running through a sporting event is when a streaker runs through a sporting event and eats it.

Fans at the Ski Jumping World Cup in Planica, Slovenia were treated to the latter of these streaking scenarios when a man dressed in nothing but socks and a beard sprinted into the course.

The streaker was free of security and appeared to be heading for the landing area when he slipped on a tarp and skidded out of control, biting it badly. The result was a stark naked Polish man spreadeagled for every fan to see, helicoptering a shirt (among other things) in the middle of an international sporting event.

Officers were able to get the man under control and escorted him off the field with a crack full of powder.

Obviously, this is what they call “Monday” in Slovenia and a good laugh was had by all, especially by the skier in the red kit standing by the course exit.

One can only guess how the man came to the decision to strip down and hit the snow (wild guess: dka), but it is certainly the first time this author has ever seen a streaker at a winter sports event.

What we do know is that this man had a dream and a pair of steely blue ones to pull of this stunt. And to that, we salute you, you crazy, bearded dreamer.

We're streaking down to the quad, everybody's doing it! Dr__Carson

Bad spending habits catches up to Cowboys, forced to window shop only

The Dallas Cowboys have made some curious moves in the past; however, the new CBA salary cap is unforgiving.

The Cowboys continued questionable moves when they franchised linebacker Anthony Spencer. Spencer a solid linebacker at best should have been let go and a cheaper replacement could have been found, along with some cap flexibility.

That?s one example of bad decisions that have given the team only S102,000 in salary cap money.

According to Gregg Rosenthal of NFL.com, the Cowboys mismanagement has forced the organization to only be able to ?window shop? and the inability to sign their free agent as well. Rosenthal writes:

?A source told the paper [ Fort Worth-Star Telegram] that the visits should not be seen as a sign the team is close to extensions for quarterback Tony Romo or linebacker Anthony Spencer, both of which would free up cap room. But surely the Cowboys have a plan to free up space, or they wouldn't entertain the possibility of signing the three players. ...

Linebacker James Harrison is trying to ?crawl? back to the Steelers

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, linebacker James Harrison is open to returning to the Pittsburgh Steelers, the very same team he refused to take a pay cut from.

Harrison was confident he would attract offers from other teams, but at the owners meetings in Arizona last week, Harrison?s name was said to be ?the coldest? and very little interest.

Harrison?s agent stated, ?Harrison has not closed the door on his client returning to [Pittsburgh] and would welcome a call from Steelers.? Darin Gantt of Profootballtalk.com writes:

?Now, he?s [Harrison] trying to crawl back to the Steelers. Harrison might be the guy without a chair when the pass-rushers all settle into place.

And when he does, it?s hard to imagine he?ll approach anything close to the $6.57 million he was supposed to make this year. Or maybe even the 30-percent pay cut the Steelers offered, with the chance to earn the balance back in incentives.?

Mexico vs. USA: Epic Qualifier Will Have Profound Impact on 2014 World Cup

Tuesday's World Cup qualifying match between Mexico and the United States is shaping as one of the best international football matches seen this year.

And it certainly won't be without it's fair share of talking points.

From the 100 degree heat that Mexico played in to the blizzard that engulfed the USMNT's qualifier, the two teams bring very different form lines into this one.

And as a continuation of a great and historic rivalry that has seen memorable matches played over the years, this one is shaping as of the greatest yet. After all, the United States haven't ever defeated their rivals in Mexico in their 69-year history—could this be the weekend where it all changes?

We'll know soon enough on that front, but the fact remains clear that there are plenty of incredibly huge talking points for both teams coming into the qualifier. Yet there can be none greater than that of the 2014 World Cup itself—the tournament for which all these qualifiers are about.

For this qualifier itself has the power to drastically change the balance of power in the CONCACAF hexagonal qualifying process. Moreover, it has the ability to change the teams that will and won't be moving through to the group stages of the 2014 World Cup.

Even with eight qualifying matches still remaining.

Have a look at the current standings on the table above, provided via Fox Sports.

We can see that Honduras currently lead the United States, Panama, Mexico and Jamaica, whilst Costa Rica round out the group—unlikely to be a genuine contender for qualification.

And already, we can make a few fair predictions about the standings, starting with the fact that Honduras are likely to move through to the World Cup.

They are particularly strong at home, and have the attacking talent needed to score goals when needed, like we saw recently against Mexico.

It might not have been the first team that we expected to declare through to the World Cup, but with their games against all of the smaller teams still to be played, expect Honduras to find themselves well clear on top of the table by the time the reverse fixtures come.

Which leaves the United States and Mexico both needing to pick up those second and third spots—something they should do given their respective talent.

However, it could all come down to this match—particularly for Mexico—who can ill-afford to give up a stack of points to their rival nations here. If they lose to the United States here, or even draw against them, then their run at the World Cup will be significantly harder.

El Tri play two difficult away qualifiers to Jamaica and Panama after this one, and are likely to drop some points throughout those fixtures. That's not to say they can't win both, but rather acknowledging the talent that both teams have shown throughout the qualifiers so far.

And should they drop those points, the United States and Honduras will likely pull a full win clear on top of the group—leaving Mexico to battle it out with their other CONCACAF nations. Which is certainly not the position you want to be in heading into the offseason.

Four points dropped in those three matches might not seem like much, but it could end up being the difference between being in Brazil or not. That might sound dramatic, but the reality is that no team wants to be heading into the final game needing to win—regardless of whom it's against.

Of course, that can all be somewhat avoided here with a Mexican win, and the continuation of their incredible winning streak in Mexico over the USMNT.

But when Tuesday rolls around and the "pressure" on both teams is talked about, just know that there actually is a lot at stake in this one.

It might not seem like it now, but when it comes to the final games and the 2014 World Cup is within sight, then this one could well seem like the final itself for countries in the CONCACAF.

Who's winning this one? Mexico or the United States?

Wayne Rooney Has Shot at Redemption with England Against Montenegro

Wayne Rooney will have his chance at international redemption, but it won't come easy—or without provocation.

Rooney and England are set to play Montenegro Tuesday in Podgorica as the Three Lions continue their quest to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. For Rooney, however, more is at stake.

The last time Rooney and England played in Podgorica, Rooney was sent off for a late kick at Montenegro's Miodrag Dzudovic in an October 2011 match. England salvaged a 2-2 draw and qualified for Euro 2012, but Rooney's story lingered on.

Rooney, whose father had been arrested shortly before the match in relation to betting irregularities (via BBC Sport), drew a three-match UEFA ban, which was later reduced to two games. Those two games happened to come at Euro 2012, where England's challenge ended in the quarterfinals against Italy.

The incident and its aftermath brought back into question Rooney's ability to control himself in pressure-packed and important situations. In the 2006 World Cup, Rooney was sent off for a stamp on Portugal's Ricardo Carvalho as Cristiano Ronaldo famously played his own part in his then-teammate's dismissal with a wink.

Nearly seven years after Portugal and 17 months after Podgorica, Rooney has a chance to make the latter right. Halfway through qualifying for the 2014 World Cup, Montenegro lead Group H with 13 points, two ahead of England.

Both teams have five matches remaining. The group winners qualify automatically for the World Cup.

That makes Tuesday's match vital, and Rooney is one player on everybody's mind. "There is no doubt that Wayne Rooney is one of the best strikers in the world but we know from the last time England played here that he can sometimes play with a hot head," said Montenegro captain Mirko Vucinic (via the Daily Telegraph).

That doesn't quite amount to an admission that Montenegro will try to wind up Rooney, but it comes close. Regardless of how those words are interpreted, though, it's clear Rooney will be a key man for Montenegro on Tuesday.

Vucinic added: "He is a good player but it has been proved over the years that you can get a reaction out of him. England would have no chance with 10 men and I’m sure their coach will be telling them that."

England manager Roy Hodgson, meanwhile, said he thinks Rooney has matured. The stats seem to back that opinion: Rooney received only one yellow card in the Premier League last season, and even though he has drawn six yellows this campaign, he has not been sent off this season or last (via EPL Index).

"Wayne's played so many games, he's so experienced, I'm sure he's capable of writing off the incident," Roy Hodgson said per The Guardian. "He's paid his price. I'd like to think he'd forget all about it."

Maybe Rooney has not forgotten all about it. In his own words, Rooney has suggested that he's learned from his mistake.

"I didn't think: 'Right, I'm going to kick this player.' It just happened," Rooney said last summer at Euro 2012 (per The Guardian). "I understood straightaway it was a mistake."

With that realization in hand, Rooney's experience and goalscoring ability could combine to lethal effect for England.

Regan Smith to drive for Phoenix Racing

Regan Smith and Kurt Busch are trading places - at least for now.

Smith, 29, will drive the No. 51 Phoenix Racing Chevrolet at Charlotte Motor Speedway while Busch takes over the seat in the No. 78 Furniture Row Chevrolet for the remainder of the season and on to next year.

"We're looking forward to having Regan in our car," said Phoenix Racing general manager Steve Barkdoll. "Regan performed the tire test at Kansas and that should be helpful at intermediate tracks. We believe he can help get our program back on track and help attract sponsorship going forward."

Smith has competed in NASCAR since 2002 and in the Sprint Cup Series since 2007. His sole official win came last year at Darlington Raceway, but Smith came incredibly close to his first victory here at Talladega in the fall of 2008. However, in NASCAR's judgment, Smith was dropped from first to 18th after the race for passing below the yellow line to advance his position.

Smith is currently a career-best 23rd in the Cup

Report: Bruins Among Four Teams Having ?Ongoing Discussions? About Jarome Iginla With Calgary Flames

Everybody seems to want Jarome Iginla at this year?s NHL trade deadline, and that competition will only heat up as the April 3 trade deadline nears. While nofront runnerfor the forward?s services has emerged, it appears that a quartet of teams is staying involved with the Calgary Flames.
The Bruins are one of those four teams, according to TSN?s Darren Dreger. As Dreger sees it, Boston, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles and Chicago are four teams having ?ongoing conversations? with Calgary.
Iginla, 35, is having another strong season for the struggling Flames. Through29 games, he has eight goals and 13 assists, with those 21 point totals the third most on the squad.
Over the course of a 15-year NHL career, the right winger has compiled524 goals and570 assists.

Justin Upton hits homer over the scoreboard

In Thursday night's Nationals-Braves game, new Atlanta left fielder Justin Upton unloaded on an 86 mph Dan Haren cutter, sending the first pitch he saw in his sixth inning at bat out of the park for a homer. But the fact that Upton homered is only half oft he story. Upton's monstrous homer not only left the yard, but also cleared the scoreboard in left center field at Champion Stadium. It was his fifth homer of the spring, giving the Braves three players with five homers this spring (with Freddie Freeman and Juan Francisco joining Upton). No other team has three players with five, but three have two: the Phillies (Ryan Howard, Domonic Brown), Mariners (Michael Morse, Kendrys Morales), and Astros (Brandon Laird, Jason Castro). Oddly, three of those four teams play their spring games in Florida, when Arizona is typically the offensive hotbed. [follow]

Rio Ferdinand defends trip to Qatar

Rio Ferdinand has defended his decision to fly to Doha and appear as a television analyst for England's World Cup qualifier, days after ruling himself out of the match because of fitness issues.

The Manchester United defender cited the need to follow a ''detailed and pre-planned program'' of fitness for missing Friday's game at San Marino and Tuesday's qualifier against Montenegro. It would have marked his international return after a two-year absence.

Instead, he'll be in Qatar to visit the Aspire training academy before working for Al-Jazeera.

Ferdinand says in a Twitter post that it's ''no different from what I done on the last 10day international break,'' and says it was ''punditry thrown in for a game I would have watched anyway.''

Trumbo gives Angels the edge at DH in West

The American League West is loaded with designated hitters with solid resumes.

Mark Trumbo was an All-Star last year. Lance Berkman was a most valuable player candidate two seasons ago and Kendrys Morales was on his way to a big career before an ankle injury.

How will it shake out at the DH position this year?

Here's a look at the DH rankings in the West.

1. Los Angeles The Angels certainly boast of the most versatile designated hitters in baseball in Mark Trumbo. He may also be one of the best. Trumbo played left field, right field, first base and third base for the Angels last year as the team tried to find a way to keep his All-Star bat in the lineup despite Trumbo having defensive deficiencies. With all those spots occupied as of now, it looks like the majority of his ABs this year will come from the DH spot. He certainly gives the Angels a potent one as Trumbo, who finished second in the rookie of the year voting in 2011, hit 32 home runs last season. Many of them were of the majestic variety to

Vancouver Canucks: Was NHL Justice Is Served with Alexander Edler's Suspension?

Alex Edler was suspended two games by Brendan Shanahan for running into Mike Smith in a game between the Canucks and Coyotes on Thursday, March 21.

It was a violation of Rule 42 of the NHL rulebook, specifically regarding charging and the protection it affords goalies from physical contact.

And so the NHL is suspending him for two games. Edler will miss games on Saturday, March 23 and Sunday, March 24 against the L.A. Kings and Colorado Avalanche, respectively.

I’m sure there are quite a few fans that feel this is a travesty of justice. That happens in every market when one of their stars is suspended. At least in markets that actually have fans.

And there are bound to be Coyotes fans thinking Edler got off lightly.

But I’m ok with the two-game suspension.

First, it was a violation of the rules. This wasn’t a grey area or subject to interpretation.

Shanahan breaks it down quite succinctly in the suspension video, but the key points are that Edler was in violation of Rule 42, he doesn’t have a suspension history and Smith was injured.

While I think the rule itself is stupid (in my opinion, goalies who are in the crease should be protected, goalies outside the crease playing the puck like a skater to get their team an advantage should be fair game), the rule is on the books.

Edler nailed him. That isn’t under dispute.

Second, the suspension isn’t a huge deal for the Canucks.

In a reversal of years past, the Canucks are hurting at forward while healthy on defence, so they can cope without Edler for a few games. Not ideal to lose an All-Star, but it is manageable.

Third, I’m ok with the idea of running Mike Smith at that point in the game.

Earlier in the period, Smith punched a falling and defenceless Daniel Sedin with a trapper to the nose, leaving him with some nice stitches.

While Smith wasn’t wholly responsible, as his defender did push Sedin awkwardly as they were about to crash the net, if anyone injures one of your star players, it is ok to look for a chance to retaliate.

In this case, Smith put himself in the crosshairs by deciding he wanted to go out and literally play in traffic, coming out to not only play the puck, but attempting to stickhandle it as well to make a play to clear the zone on the penalty kill.

He did this behind the net, with no room to dodge the oncoming 6’3”, 215 pound Edler, who was already charging hard for the puck before Smith left his crease.

Edler is supposed to take all reasonable efforts to avoid leveling the goalie, and he clearly didn’t, instead appearing to take advantage of the opportunity to get some retribution for Daniel Sedin and maybe shake up the goalie.

Smith is now listed as day to day with an upper body injury and left the game, and Edler gets a slap on the wrist from Shanahan and is grounded this weekend.

It happens rarely, but I actually feel the NHL reached a reasonable verdict based upon the rulebook and video evidence, unlike in the Jannik Hansen suspension earlier this year

Now if someone can just explain to me how Rich Nash didn’t even get a hearing for this elbow.
