Eastern Washington Beats No. 25 Oregon State 49-46 in Shocking Upset

In the most shocking upset of college football's opening week, Eastern Washington defeated the No. 25 Oregon State Beavers by a score of 49-46 in Corvallis, Ore. This marks the first time a top-25 team has been upset, and it comes at the hands of an FCS program.

Eastern Washington was led by quarterback Vernon Adams, who threw for 411 yards and four touchdowns. Adams also ran for 107 yards and two touchdowns on 16 attempts, doing it all for the underdogs and leading the charge.

Oregon State attempted a game-tying 52-yard field goal in the closing seconds, but it all ended in a monumental upset.

Mike Tokito of The Oregonian put it best:

We're still wondering the same thing.

Oregon State quarterback Sean Mannion wasn't to blame, as he completed 37-of-43 passes for 422 yards and three touchdowns to no interceptions. Brandin Cooks caught 13 passes for 196 yards and two touchdowns, while Storm Woods ran for 68 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries.

It simply wasn't enough to overcome the horrendous play of the Beavers' defense and magnificence of Adams.

Oregon State got on the board early, taking a 7-6 lead after the first quarter behind a touchdown from Mannion to Connor Hamlett. Eastern Washington proceeded to score 23 points in the second, using three touchdown passes from Adams to take a 29-17 lead into the half.

The Eagles didn't let up.

Mannion found Cooks for a score and Woods ran one in from three yards out to make it 32-29 Oregon State with 4:22 remaining in the third quarter. While the Beavers' offense came to life, however, their defense fell asleep.

Adams scampered for a 19-yard touchdown to recapture the lead, 36-32, heading into the fourth quarter.

Mannion found Cooks again for a 14-yard touchdown completion early in the fourth quarter, making it 39-36 Oregon State with 13:46 remaining. Just over three minutes later, Adams hit Blair Bomber for a 47-yard score to make it 43-39.

Terron Ward crossed the goal line on a four-yard run to make it 46-43 Oregon State, but that simply wasn't enough. The Beavers' defense continued to struggle, allowing Eastern Washington to work the clock and Adams to eventually pound it in from two yards out, putting the Eagles back on top for good.

It was a game to remember for the Eastern Washington quarterback, and one to forget for the Beavers' defense.

From elite to disturbingly poor, Oregon State's defensive collapse was stunning.

This marks the fifth time this week that an FCS team has defeated an FBS program. Towson beat Connecticut, 33-18, North Dakota State surprised Kansas State, 24-21, Samford upset Georgia State, 31-21, and Southern Utah took down South Alabama, 22-21.

None of those games were as shocking as this, though.

Oregon State is expected to be a contender in the Pac-12, offsetting significant losses on defense by using a high-powered offense to win games. In the end, the departure of players such as star cornerback Jordan Poyer proved to be too much to overcome.

As a result, we have our first unbelievable upset of the college football season.

Phatlum takes early lead at Safeway

Thailand's Pornanong Phatlum shot an 8-under 64 on Thursday to take a one-stroke lead over Lexi Thompson after the first round of the Safeway Classic.

The 23-year-old Phatlum, winless in five seasons on the LPGA Tour, had 10 birdies and two bogeys in her afternoon round at rain-softened Columbia Edgewater. The start of play was delayed an hour, and players were allowed to lift, clean and place their golf balls because of the wet conditions.

"Putting was so good," said Phatlum, the winner of the unofficial LPGA Brazil Cup in 2012. "I changed putter for this week and feeling very good. And I made many birdies today, like 10 birdies today. ... I just try my best and I'm feeling very good with the course. I like the course, very nice."

The 18-year-old Thompson eagled the par-5 seventh hole -- her 16th hole of the day -- and had five birdies in her bogey-free morning round. She won the 2011 Navistar LPGA Classic for her lone tour title.

Dale Jr. living a driver's nightmare

Dale Earnhardt Jr. didn't want to climb out of the No. 88 car this weekend -- or any weekend.

Finally, the pieces had come together. In his fifth season at Hendrick Motorsports, Earnhardt had blossomed under the direction of crew chief Steve Letarte. Earnhardt had led the point standings for the first time in eight years. After a four-season drought, he returned to Victory Lane. And for the second consecutive season, Earnhardt had earned a spot in the Chase for the Sprint Cup.

In 2012, Earnhardt finally had a legitimate shot at the championship -- until Sunday.

What appeared to be a relatively benign crash -- at least by Talladega Superspeedway standards -- compounded symptoms from an earlier accident Earnhardt experienced during a tire test at Kansas Speedway on Aug. 29.

On Wednesday, Earnhardt was diagnosed with a concussion. Consequently, he withdrew from the next two races on the Sprint Cup schedule -- Charlotte and Kansas.

"It's frustrating," Earnhardt said. "I really didn'

John Calipari Takes Honest, Laid-Back Approach To Recruiting Big Man Myles Turner

There is no debate that John Calipari isn?t one of the best recruiters in college basketball ? year in and year out Cal brings in the nation?s top talent to play for the Kentucky Wildcats.
One of Cal?s biggest targets in the class of 2014 is 6-foot-11 center Myles Turner out of Texas. Turner is a 5-star prospect according to Rivals who boasts an elite offer list, so many top programs will be working hard to secure his commitment.
In addition to being a great basketball player, Turner is a very candid writer ? he writes his own blog for USA Today, where he discusses basketball and recruiting. In his latest post, he talked about interactions with some of the nation?s best coaches, including Calipari:

Like Coach (John) Calipari is really laid back. He told me straight-up: ?Myles I?m a 50-year-old man and you?re a teenager; there?s nothing we can talk about every day. I?m not gonna be calling you seven days a week.? I really liked that. He just told me that he really wants me and he knows

Vols' Maymon: I'll be at 100 percent for opener

Tennessee forward Jeronne Maymon thinks he should be at 100 percent by the start of the season as he recovers from a knee injury that prevented him from playing last year.

''I feel good,'' Maymon said. ''My body feels good. No pain. Nothing. I'm ready to go.''

Tennessee opens the season Nov. 12 at Xavier as it tries to return to the NCAA tournament after back-to-back NIT appearances.

Maymon earned second-team all-Southeastern Conference honors two years ago before sitting out the entire 2012-13 season. Maymon said he isn't as explosive as he was before the injury, but the 6-foot-8 senior believes that will change as the season goes on.

''As of now, I'm not as explosive as I was, but I think I do a real good job of (mentally) slowing the game down and I think that helps me with my passes, getting to the hole and seeing different things that I didn't see before,'' Maymon said. NBA Rookie Victor Oladipo Strips Kevin Durant and Dunks at the Goodman League

Orlando Magic rookie Victor Oladipo is an early top candidate for the 2013-14 NBA Rookie of the Year award largely because of his lockdown defense and supreme athleticism.

Oladipo put that on display at the Goodman League this weekend in Maryland, playing at his high school alma mater with a group of other big-name pros—none bigger than Kevin Durant

Fans got to see what makes Oladipo so special when he stripped the ball from Durant and scored on a fast-break dunk at the other end.

This should certainly help whet the appetite of Magic fans for the upcoming season.

The wait is nearly over, Penn State faces Syracuse this week

On Saturday MetLife Stadium will serve as Syracuse's home-away-from-home against Penn State. Photo: Kevin McGuire

After months of waiting, the first kickoff of the 2013 season is nearly upon us. Penn State will begin year two under Bill O'Brien and serve the second of a four-year postseason ban? Nothing to play for? Hardly. While the 2012 season will forever be recognized as one of the most memorable seasons worthy of discussion against a pair of national championship seasons, 1994, 2005 and 2008 and more, the 2013 season will be about taking the next steps forward as a football program.

This Saturday, the next step comes against historic rival Syracuse on an NFL stage in MetLife Stadium.

Penn State has the talent on he first string roster to do plenty of damage this season but the depth will begin to be more of a concern this fall as a result of NCAA sanctions limiting scholarship numbers in the program. The key players will have familiar names on off...

Beyond the Boxscore: Wisconsin 101, Ottawa 92

Now that was more fun to watch.

After another somewhat slow start, the Badgers used a big run at the end of the first half, and a quick start to the second to knock off the Ottawa Gee Gees 101-92. The win moved Wisconsin to 1-1 on the Canada trip as the Badgers take tomorrow off before games on three consecutive days.

Again, the Badgers showed that they are going to be playing a different brand of basketball this year, and that?s not a bad thing. While the team may run a little more, there is no way a Bo Ryan coached team will play undisciplined, as he won?t allow it. Wisconsin will still work the shot clock to get a good shot, just expect more creative play from the guards as that?s how the team is shaping up to play.

While the offensive side looked strong tonight, the defense still needs some work. Ottawa could really shoot from the outside, but the Gee Gees were getting too many open looks. Most NCAA teams will hit open threes if given, so that needs to shore up.

Bale's Real Madrid deal worth 97million as Spanish giants get ready to announce transfer

Gareth Bale has agreed a stunning 97million contract to join Real Madrid.

The Spanish club are set to announce the world-record 86m signing of Bale which means the cost of the deal will total around 183m.

Bale will sign a six-year 310000-a-week contract to complete his move from Tottenham to the Bernabeu and wear the No.11 shirt for Real.

The 52 per cent tax laws in Spain mean Bale will take home 150000-a-week. It would put the 24-year-old just behind Real?s highest earner Cristiano Ronaldo who is demanding a pay rise to sign a new contract.

Real set Ronaldo?s release clause at around 855m and will insert a similarly huge buy-out fee into Bale?s deal to scare off Manchester City Paris Saint-Germain and Monaco in future years.

A stage has already been erected at the Bernabeu in preparation for Bale?s presentation to the Real fans.

Kyle Busch's New $7.5M Mega Mansion

((HT: WCNC-TV))

Not bad to have a disposable $7.5-million or so, right...???

Kyle Busch bought a 13,000-square-foot home on Lake Norman (NC) last month for a Charlotte-area record $7.5 million...

Evidence below...

Local attorney Cliff Homesley, who is identified in the records as trustee of the private trust that owns the home, represented Busch in his 128-in-a-45 speeding case last year.

Homesley declined this week to say who bought the home. ?It?s confidential,? he said. ?I can?t verify anything.?

Of course, he can't...

The previous record for a sale price in the area was a little over $6.3-million in 2007.

Rams vs. Broncos: TV Info, Spread, Injury Updates, Game Time and More

The Denver Broncos and St. Louis Rams face unique challenges in 2013 as they endeavor to win an NFL title.

For the Rams, it's going to be a struggle just getting into the playoffs.

The NFC West is arguably the toughest division in football this year. The San Francisco 49ers won the division by a slight margin over the Seattle Seahawks, and both teams figure to be players in this year's postseason scrum.

Even the Arizona Cardinals, under new head coach Bruce Arians, can't be taken lightly.

Still, the Rams posted the best divisional record of all four teams in 2012, going 4-1-1, and general manager Les Snead has done a brilliant job bringing in players that can help his team continue to improve.

For the Broncos, getting into the playoffs should be easy, as the AFC West is perhaps the weakest division in the league.

However, with Von Miller's six-game suspension looming, as reported by NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, and a suspect offensive line, it remains to be seen what kind of impact the Broncos will have once they get into the postseason tournament.

Here's what you need to know about the upcoming Rams-Broncos preseason game.

Where: Sports Authority Field at Mile High, Denver, Colo.

When: Saturday, Aug. 24, at 8 p.m. ET

Watch: CBS

Live Stream: Preseason Live

Listen: Online at NFL Audio Pass

Betting Lines (via Covers)

Over/Under: 43.5 pts.

Spread: Denver (-6.5)

Both teams feature offenses capable of putting up big totals on the scoreboard, but they also feature defenses capable of shutting said offenses down.

It should be an interesting matchup, but in the end I think the final total will be up over the 43.5 points, which means you should bet the over.

Don't be surprised if the Rams end up winning this game. I'd be wary about betting on Denver to cover the spread.

Injury Report (via ESPN.com)

St. Louis

  • Terrance Ganaway, RB: Questionable (hamstring)
  • Lance Kendricks, TE: Questionable (knee)
  • T.J. McDonald, S: Probable (knee)

Denver

  • Stewart Bradley, LB: Doubtful (wrist)
  • Champ Bailey, CB: Questionable (foot)
  • Derek Wolfe, DE: Questionable (back)
  • Joel Dreessen, TE: Questionable (knee)
  • Wes Welker, WR: Probable (ankle)
  • Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie: Probable (ankle)

Rams Player to Watch: Tavon Austin, Wide Receiver

The Rams made a bold move to pick up an offensive playmaker for Sam Bradford, drafting Austin No. 8 overall this past spring.

Unquestionably one of the most electric players to enter the NFL this season, Austin has garnered high praise from beat writers and national analysts alike. NFL Network's Mike Mayock said Austin, "might be the most explosive player I've ever seen in my life," via NFL: AroundtheLeague:

Watching Austin carve up opposing defenses at West Virginia, it's hard to argue with Mayock's assessment.

However, to this point in the preseason Austin hasn't made much of an impact at all. After failing to catch a single pass in Week 1, he managed just four catches for 28 yards in Week 2.

This week, with starters expected to play at least through halftime and perhaps through the third quarter, fans should get a chance to see what—if anything—all the hype is about.

Broncos Player to Watch: Shaun Phillips, Linebacker

The Broncos can weather the storm while Miller serves his six-game suspension to start the season, provided Phillips can play at a high level.

Even though the former San Diego Chargers pass-rusher managed 9.5 sacks a year ago, he doesn't come close to matching what Miller did for the Broncos, when you factor in pressures and hits.

Furthermore, Phillips has played in a 3-4 defense during his time with the Chargers, and he'll be taking on new responsibilities this year, now that he's replacing Miller and won't be just a situational pass-rusher.

For his part, Phillips isn't worried about replacing Miller, as noted by the team's official Twitter account:

A strong showing against an underrated Rams offense would go a long way toward giving such a sentiment firm ground on which to stand.

Prediction

St. Louis features a dynamic front four, and I expect the Rams to get pressure on Peyton Manning early and often, which could spell doom for Denver's offense.

On the other hand, the Seahawks brought plenty of pressure, even getting a few hits on Manning, and he still managed to move the offense.

The real key to this game is whether or not Denver's secondary, playing without Champ Bailey, will be able to contain St. Louis' passing attack.

I'm betting on the Rams to surprise a lot of people and outclass the Broncos in their own house.

Final Score: Rams win 31-27
