Breeders' Stakes 2013 Results: Winner, Purse and Top Finishers

Heavy favorite Up With the Birds ran an excellent race and pulled away from the field late to finish in first place at the 2013 Breeders' Stakes.

Ontario Thoroughbred's Twitter account posted the news of the victory, which was won in a time of two minutes and 28.69 seconds:

The third leg of the Canadian Triple Crown featured the best three-year-old thoroughbreds the country had to offer, all fighting for the biggest share of the $500,000 guaranteed purse. According to the Canadian Press, owner Sam-Son Farm came away with $300,000 with the victory.

There was no chance at the Triple Crown as Midnight Aria won the Queen's Plate, which was followed by Uncaptured winning the Prince of Wales Stakes. However, Up With the Birds can be satisfied with a quality victory to round out the major races of the year.

Here is a look at the top finishers at the race at Woodbine Racetrack:

Keith McCalmont provided a look at the final moments of the race:

In the 1.5-mile race on grass, Up With the Birds got out to a strong start, which was captured by Katie Lamb:

The runner-up at Queen's Plate already had three stakes wins in its career, and as a result was given 1-2 odds by post time, according to Metro News Canada.

This is a big moment for trainer Malcolm Pierce, who had seen various levels of success prior to working with this champion horse. However, the most impressive career mark is that of owner Sam-Son Farms, according to Gene Kershner of the Buffalo News:

This is the third career win at a Canadian Classic for jockey Eurico Rosa da Silva.

River Seven was a bit more of a surprise as the second-place finisher with more accomplished horses in the field. However, it ran a strong race and was just held off at the end by the eventual winner.

Pyrite Mountain also ended in the money with a third-place finish led by jockey Gary Boulanger.

The field was more open thanks to the absence of both Midnight Aria and Uncaptured, but the 10-horse field presented enough of a challenge to make it a competitive showing.

Still, Up With the Birds was the story of the day with an excellent showing at one of the biggest races in Canada. While there was no Triple Crown winner, there was plenty of excitement throughout the summer.

Hopefully fans will get a chance to see history being made in the 2014 version of the races.
