Arsenal Transfer News: Gunners Must Be More Aggressive to Improve Squad

Arsenal finished fourth in the English Premier League standings last season, but manager Arsene Wenger must be more aggressive leading up to the transfer window deadline in order to improve his squad.

Earlier this week, Wenger said his club is being active in trying to add players, according to FoxSports.com.

We are active. We are in a situation like Manchester United, like Chelsea, where everybody expects signings and at the moment not a lot has happened. There are 18 days to go, so that is a long time in the transfer market and we will be active. I cannot certify what the number [of players coming in will be], but we will be active until the end, that is for sure."

He has a point. Fans of every team are anxious right now and want their teams to be making moves. However, Arsenal are in a tougher position than most.

By now, every Arsenal fan has had a chance to digest the team's shocking 3-1 loss to Aston Villa on Saturday, recap courtesy of ESPNFC.com. A quick goal by Olivier Giroud in the sixth minute was a great sign, but questionable calls played a factor in the team's loss.

Wenger's comments about being active came before his team was stunned by Villa. There's probably more urgency for Wenger to make a move now.

There are plenty of players out there who would improve Arsenal's squad. There's Gustavo, Wayne Rooney and Jackson Martinez to name a few. Some players may be more realistic options than others, but it's obvious that the Gunners need help.

Arsenal travels to Turkey on Wednesday to take on Fenerbache in a Champions League playoff match. It will be a big test for the Gunners to see how they respond to such a disappointing loss.

The fans want Wenger to spend money so Arsenal stands a chance to knock off Manchester United this season. Wenger has been trying to develop talent, but there is still time for him to make a couple of big signings.

The Sept. 2 deadline is quickly approaching. At least one move must be made in order to send a message that the Gunners are willing to spend to compete with the best.

Arsenal have many needs to fill. They could use a goalkeeper, a midfielder, a center-back and a striker. The team has Wojciech Szczesny and Lukasz Fabianski in net, but their starter is still very young. The 23-year-old Szczesny still has time to develop and might benefit from learning from a more experienced goalkeeper.

Lukas Podolski, Theo WalcottSantiago Cazorla and Giroud are all talented players. The Gunners should look to add talent to help them.

With so many needs, Wenger has plenty of players he can try to sign.

At this point, fans don't care what position gets addressed first. Any bold move would be a step in the right direction.

His comments may have come earlier in the week, but he is now under tremendous pressure to make a move given his team's recent performance.

Wenger has less than three weeks to make something happen. Arsenal could use some help in multiple positions, so it will be interesting to see if Wenger makes a move.
