Nadal may pull out of Indian Wells

Rafael Nadal may pull out of next week's Indian Wells Masters in California to spare his fragile knees from the hard courts.

Nadal said he loves the tournament he won in 2007 and 2009 but he has to think about protecting his knees and stay healthy for the European clay-court season which climaxes with the French Open, which he has won seven times.

He didn't say whether he would also compete in the hard-court Key Biscayne Masters, where he's reached the final three times, and which follows Indian Wells.

''My intention is to go to Indian Wells,'' Nadal said after reaching the second round of the Mexican Open late Tuesday. ''This is the truth because I love this tournament and the priority is to play. But if I don't feel comfortable playing and decide to wait to play on the hard courts, that's how it will be and I'll rest for the clay-court season (in Europe). But today I can't answer.''

Nadal has been critical of playing on hard courts and has sugg

Woods, McIlroy on road to Masters

When Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy began the year, no one had this in mind for their rivalry.

They made their debut in Abu Dhabi last month and both missed the cut. The played in the same tournament last week in the Match Play Championship, and both were eliminated in the first round.

The difference is that Woods returned to Torrey Pines the week after missing the cut and left little reason for anyone to doubt the state of his game when he built a lead that reached eight shots until the day dragged on and he won by four for his 75th career PGA Tour win.

But the start of the Florida swing is no time to panic, and McIlroy sure doesn't sound worried at the Honda Classic.

Mavericks reportedly bothered that Derek Fisher signed with Thunder

Derek Fisher signed with the Oklahoma City Thunder this week, and the move is not sitting well with the Dallas Mavericks. Dallas signed Fisher at the end of November after point guard Darren Collison got hurt. At the time, Fisher said he would devote himself to the Mavs for the season. ?I told (teammates) today, ?This is not a pit stop. This is not kind of the final whatever before I decide to retire soon.? I?m here to give everything I have to help this team right now and continue to build as we go through this season,? Fisher said after his first practice with the Mavericks on Nov. 29. After straining his knee on Dec. 18, Fisher went against the commitment he made to the team and asked for his release. ?In Tuesday?s game against Philadelphia, I suffered an injury to my patellar tendon,? Fisher said in a statement. ?With this news and the difficulty I have been having being away from my family, I have asked the organization to waive me so I can return home.? The Mavericks obliged and

Iowa State Fan Drops Racial Slurs & Death Threats On Kansas Guard Elijah Johnson

Iowa State fans have not been taking last nights loss to Kansas very well. First we had thenut-jobstorm the court to confront KU coach Bill Self. Now, even worse, we?re seeing an ISU fan named Stephen Koithan dropping death threats and racial slurs to star Kansas guard Elijah Johnson via a series of now deleted tweets.
Johnson, who scored 39 points in the overtime win, was the target of harsh words and threats of violence from a crew of Iowa State d-bags.
Their names? Stephen Koithan and Jordan Sitzmann.
Here was the worst tweet which came from Sitzmann and was re-tweeted by Koithan:
Me and @stephen_koithan are gonna take his gun and head over to the KU bus?.. got 30 bullets so whose on the list.
It appears that the tweets were first noticed by @michaelgraham, an Iowa Hawkeyes fan. He made it his mission to get these tweets seen and has done just that.

Koithan and Sitzmann?s accounts have since been deactivated.

NCAA Tournament bracket projections

I apologize for the one-day delay in getting the projections out this week, but a death in the family changed my priorities early this week. Tuesday night?s slate looked to be an uneventful one, but two potential number one seeds wound up going down on the road, as Minnesota knocked off top-ranked IU while surging Tennessee took care of a short-handed Florida squad. Those two results, along with Memphis? road loss at Xavier, produced a small shakeup in this week?s bracket. There is still the potential for a lot of movement at the top of the bracket, and with bubble teams floundering left and right, a few mid-majors like Akron, Belmont, Louisiana Tech, and Middle Tennessee may be able to work their way into the at-large picture if they fail to win their respective conference tournaments. The projections below take into account all games played through Tuesday, Feb. 26. MIDWEST (INDIANAPOLIS) EAST (WASHINGTON, DC) Dayton ? March 22nd/24th Philadelphia ? March 22nd/24th 1)In...

Mark Hunt and the 3 Strangest Success Stories in UFC History

Just as he’s quick to pull the plug on a presumably boring fighter’s career, UFC president Dana White has a propensity to give exciting fighters second chances.

One of those explosive fighters, volatile heavyweight Mark Hunt, got his opportunity from White in the midst of the most miserable and self-destructive stretch of his career.

A former standout in K-1, Hunt went on a four-year winless drought that spanned from July 2006 to February 2011. In that stretch, Hunt lost six straight fights, astoundingly dropping five by submission and one by KO.

But amazingly, five losses into his losing streak, White offered Hunt a contract and a fight with Sean McCorkle at UFC 119.

At the time, White’s move appeared foolish, especially considering how Hunt appeared content simply collecting paychecks in his waning days in Japan.

Three fights later, however, Hunt, a star in his early days in the Pride Fighting Championships, once again stands of on the brink of fighting the world’s best.

But Hunt isn’t the only seemingly down-and-out fighter who received a second chance from White.

Here’s a look at three other fighters who took similarly strange paths to success in the UFC.

Kobe blasts Mark Cuban on Twitter

Kobe Bryant took a shot at Mark Cuban after his Los Angeles Lakers won in Dallas Sunday 103-99, sending a succinct yet powerful tweet: Amnesty THAT ? Kobe Bryant (@kobebryant) February 24, 2013 Bryant isn?t always efficient on the court, but he sure as heck was with that tweet. Two words, one sick burn. Bryant?s tweet came in response to Cuban saying on Friday that the new salary cap rules are so harsh that the Lakers theoretically could consider releasing Kobe via the amnesty provision. The Lakers were upset with the Mavericks owner for making the remarks, while Kobe responded that Cuban was saying that so he could slyly pick up Kobe if he became available. Cuban defended his comments by saying they were just hypothetical, though he did admit that he would never do it with Dirk Nowitzki, who has a similar meaning to the Mavericks as a franchise player and champion. Clearly the remarks stuck in Bryant?s mind and motivated him Sunday. He went off for 38 points, 12 rebounds, and 7 assists, two days af

Addressing Ryan Whitney and the Rangers

Dan Riedlhuber , Edmonton Journal
As the powerplay continues to struggle, many are looking for ways that the Rangers can address this need and the need for a sixth defenseman. Ryan Whitney?s name has been thrown around for the past few weeks. Whitney is no different from any other acquisition, and there are pros and cons of trading for Whitney.
Pros

Whitney is in the last year of his deal, and the Rangers can afford his $5.5 million salary and $4 million cap hit. With the cap coming down next year, the Rangers will only be looking for affordable players who do not come with long-term commitments. Whitney is just that.
Considering he?s been a healthy scratch recently, he should come relatively cheap on the trade market.

Whitney has a good history as an offensive defenseman and someone who can quarterback a powerplay. He?s coming off two straight 20 point seasons in which he missed some time due to injury. If you adjust the numbers for full 82 game seasons, Whitney is one year rem...

Miguel Cabrera obliterates a baseball

On Saturday in the Blue Jays-Tigers Spring Training opener, Prince Fielder hit a mammoth homer into the parking lot at Joker Marchant Stadium. During today's Tigers-Phillies game at Bright House Field in Clearwater, it was Miguel Cabrera's turn. In the top of the fifth inning, with Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon on the mound, Cabrera connected with a 1-2 Papelbon fastball and absolutely destroyed it, knocking it over the tiki bar in left field and into a parking lot behind the stadium. Spring Training or not, you can't leave a pitch like that belt-high and over the inner half of the plate, especially with a hitter like Cabrera at the plate. More often than not, the result will look something like...that. [follow]

Harbaugh unimpressed with Manti Te?o's 40 time

Yes, 40-yard-dash times probably carry more weight than they should. But things have been slowly tumbling downhill for Manti Te?o since he lost the Heisman to Johnny Manziel. His team got rocked in the National Championship game, and he played terribly. Then his world was blown to bits and he was placed in the spotlight when it came out his girlfriend was never real. Then on Monday he went to run his 40-yard-dash and proved to be slower than people expected. It was hoped by many that he would run a 4.75 to offset his 6?1? 240 lbs frame, but unfortunately he ran an unofficial time of 4.81 and 4.80. Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh was unimpressed with his 40-yard-dash, and Te?o better pray that his official time is somehow magically lower. Every NBA Title Contender's Biggest Roadblock to Bringing Home the Trophy

As the 2012-13 NBA regular season winds down, title contenders are beginning to separate themselves from the pack.

However, just because teams have established themselves as contenders doesn't mean that they won't encounter their fair share of on-court issues in the weeks ahead.

Whether it's an opponent's scheme or a facet of the game that team's can't seem to get a handle on, be aware that even the league's elite have flaws they must overcome in order to be crowned NBA champions.

Terrence Williams Playing Well For Boston

Former Louisville star Terrence Williams is in day six of his 10-day contract with the Boston Celtics. Last Thursday, the final day that NBA teams are allowed to make trades, Boston sent center Jason Collins and the expiring contract of shooting guardLeandro Barbosa to the Washington Wizards in exchange for shooting guard Jordan Crawford. Considering Williams and Crawford are both combo guards, it looked as if he may be a replacement for T-Will. His long term future with Boston is still unknown at this point, but Williams has made the most of opportunity thus far.
In three games for the Celtics, T-Will is averaging 14 minutes, 4.3 points, 2 assists and 2. 7 rebounds. On Friday against the Phoenix Suns, Williams finished with nine points, four rebounds and four assists.

Considering Boston lacks depth at the guard position and is still fighting for a playoff spot, I wouldn?t be surprised to see them sign T-Will for the remainder of the season. Regardless what happens in Boston, Will...

Kyle Busch's New $7.5M Mega Mansion

((HT: WCNC-TV))

Not bad to have a disposable $7.5-million or so, right...???

Kyle Busch bought a 13,000-square-foot home on Lake Norman (NC) last month for a Charlotte-area record $7.5 million...

Evidence below...

Local attorney Cliff Homesley, who is identified in the records as trustee of the private trust that owns the home, represented Busch in his 128-in-a-45 speeding case last year.

Homesley declined this week to say who bought the home. ?It?s confidential,? he said. ?I can?t verify anything.?

Of course, he can't...

The previous record for a sale price in the area was a little over $6.3-million in 2007.

Big Ten trying to add North Carolina?

The Big Ten was simply the Big Ten from 1950 to 1990 when Paterno State (Penn State) crashed and made it eleven. Eleven became twelve when Nebraska joined in 2011. Twelve will become fourteen when Maryland and Rutgers (yes, that Rutgers) will invade next year. And it isn?t stopping there. According to Jeff Ermann, publisher of InsideMDSports.com, North Carolina has an offer on the table to be 15 and a 16th would be in lockstep or right behind them. Why North Carolina? One, it would bring a huge brand to the conference. Two, Jim Delany, the Big Ten commissioner, is a UNC alum. Three, who wouldn?t want North Carolina in their conference? Speculation is that a 16th team would have to come too and the early reported favorites are Georgia Tech, Virginia and Virginia Tech. Georgia Tech would be the most likely because Atlanta would immediately become the B1G?s second-largest television market.

Brooks ponders an amnesty buyout scenario involving Brad Richards

The longer this season goes, the more I've been reminding my fellow Wings fans that the salary cap is going down from $70.2 million to $64.3 million this summer. It's probably going to stay at that level for some time as the NHLPA's share of the NHL's hockey-related revenues drops to 50% and stays there.

As such, even Detroit's $18.3 million in cap space, per Capgeek.com, becomes a tight fit despite the fact that the Wings are already $7.79 million under the current cap, with players like Valtteri Filppula, Jimmy Howard, Damien Brunner, Danny Cleary, Drew Miller and Ian White as their unrestricted free agents-to-be, and players like Brendan Smith, Brian Lashoff, Joakim Andersson and Gustav Nyquist coming off their entry-level deals. Top NFL draft prospects do Harlem Shake

It was only a matter of time.
With the "Harlem Shake" dance currently sweeping the country, several NFL draft prospects jumped on the chance to participate in the latest craze.
For those who don't know, the dance starts with one person (in this case, speed coach Loren Seagrave) busting a few moves while bystanders act oblivious. Eventually, all hell breaks loose and dancing turns into spastic movements with masks and assorted inanimate objects.
The video was recorded at the IMG Academy, a renowned facility where highly-touted college athletes train in preparation of their NFL careers.
It's hard to tell in the chaotic mess, but a few top-five prospects (Luke Joeckel, Bjoern Werner) and surefire first-rounders (Matt Barkley, Manti Te'o) can be spotted going wild. Teo's girlfriend, however, is nowhere to be found.

Solo to miss Algarve Cup; may need wrist surgery

U.S. goalkeeper Hope Solo will miss next month's Algarve Cup because of a wrist injury, and 18-year-old forward Lindsey Horan could make her national team debut at the prestigious women's tournament in Portugal.

Solo, who helped the Americans win gold medals at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics, has been playing with damaged ligaments in her right wrist, and the U.S. Soccer Federation said Thursday she may need surgery. The USSF said the team's medical staff advised her to have the wrist treated now because qualifying for the 2015 World Cup will not take place until late next year.

Nicole Barnhart, Ashlyn Harris and Jill Loyden are the three goalkeepers on the 23-woman roster.

Robert Swift Refuses to Leave House After Bank Forecloses, Sells to New Owner (Video)

Robert Swift no longer owns his house, but that doesn?t mean he?s moving out. The Seattle Sonics draft bust lost his house to foreclosure last summer, and refuses to leave, according to KOMO News. The bank has sold the house to a new owner, who can?t get Swift out. Swift was the No. 12 overall pick in 2004 out of high school. He spent four seasons in the league with the Sonics and Oklahoma City Thunder. The 27 year old made $20 million during his career and purchased the house for $1.35 million in 2006. The house has fallen into disrepair with empty beer cans littering the front yard. It also has cars sitting in the driveway that appear they haven?t been driven in some time. The house has four beds and 4 1/2 baths. It was built in 2000 and sits on approximately 6,240 square feet. Swift has until the end of the month before police will have to remove Swift by force. Early winners and losers from NBA's Trade Deadline

The NBA trade deadline has come and gone and what was anticipated as a pretty active deadline did not see some of the big names expected get moved. There was still a flurry of moves as the deadline quickly approached and lots of late-running negotiations had teams and players on pins and needles to the final moments. There were no seismic moves. Those might have been made earlier when Houston acquired James Harden and Toronto acquired Rudy Gay. There were still moves that will affect the Playoff races the rest of this year and helped shape the future of several teams. And inaction might have had a bigger consequence than making a deal. Here are three winners and three losers at the trade deadline at least by our gut reactions: Winners Milwaukee Bucks The Bucks shot for the moon and you have to give them credit for doing so to get into the Playoffs for the first time since 2010. Tavon Austin Is Smart to Call Himself Best Player in 2013 NFL Draft

Former West Virginia wide receiver Tavon Austin is a borderline first-round pick on most evaluators' draft, but that isn't stopping him from making waves at the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine.

After arriving with the wide receivers on Thursday, the former Mountaineers star finally got to publicly address the media on Friday. In a candid session that is sure to raise some eyebrows inside NFL front offices, Austin staked claim atop his own personal big board.

"I think I'm the all-around best player in the draft," said Austin (per USA Today's Robert Klemko).

To be fair, Austin did not stand up to the podium and provide himself with a Lion King moment. According to Mary Paoletti of Comcast SportsNet New England, the all-purpose stud was asked the question and answered accordingly.

That being said, Austin wasn't done making lofty predictions for himself. He told reporters that his goal was to run a 40-yard dash in less than 4.4 seconds and that he was once clocked at 4.29, according to CBS Sports' Will Brinson:

If Austin were to match his supposed career-best time, it would be just 0.05 seconds slower than Tennessee Titans running back Chris Johnson's combine record.

Unfortunately for those patiently waiting to see whether Austin can establish himself as the fastest player in this class, wide receivers don't work out until Sunday, so fans and media types will be left to dissect his comments over the next couple days.

And you know what? No matter what happens with his workout or on draft day, Austin's quote is nothing short of brilliant.

Let's start with the viability of Austin's claims. No draft board in the nation—other than perhaps the Tavon Austin List of Tavon Austin's Best Players According to Tavon Austin—have Austin as the top player on their board.

That's a perfectly reasonable position. Austin is undersized at 5'8" and needs to add bulk to his frame to withstand the rigors of NFL competition. That means there are almost no circumstances in which he'll be used as a split end on Sundays, putting his ceiling as an elite slot receiver.

In today's NFL, that's not a detriment. Wes Welker has become a perennial Pro Bowler in the slot and even traditional receivers like Larry Fitzgerald have used their versatility to excel as an inside wideout.

Austin (obviously) still has a ton of work to do to reach that level. His hands are suspect—a death knell for some prototypical slot guys—and for all of his speed, he doesn't have the top-end leaping ability to go up for high passes. But he's already an explosive route-runner, creating separation with his speed and initial burst, and could emerge as the NFL's best return man in his rookie season.

Prior to Friday, he was already one of the draft's most intriguing prospects from a skills perspective. The 2013 class has become renowned for its defensive and offensive line talent, but it's come at the expense of a skill position crop that is questionable at best.

Take Tennessee's Cordarrelle Patterson for instance. Barring something unforeseen happening between now and April, he will be the first skill position player off the board and deservedly so. He's an absolute athletic freak who should wow everyone in Indianapolis this weekend, but his overall package comes with a boatload of questions.

First and foremost, he played just one season in Knoxville. The first two years of his eligibility were spent in community college, where he dominated vastly inferior talent. At Tennessee, Patterson was an all-purpose menace, but was such an inconsistent route-runner that it bludgeoned his connection with Tyler Bray.

He finished his only FBS season with 46 receptions for 778 yards and five touchdowns. The reception and touchdown statistics were both less than half of what Austin put up in 2012, albeit Austin's came in an admittedly more pass-happy system.

It's borderline crazy to claim Austin is the best all-around player in a draft that includes Luke Joeckel, Jarvis Jones, Star Lotulelei and Chance Warmack. It just is.

But is it out of the realm of possibilities that Austin becomes the best skill-position player in his class? Not in the slightest.

Viability of the claim aside, an even bigger question still remains: What else was Austin supposed to say? Was he supposed to throw on a Mel Kiper, Jr. wig, give reporters his latest big board and individual scouting report on each player? Or would teams rather him give some vanilla answer like "there are a lot of great players here" to appease the masses?

Austin said what every other player in Indianapolis feels—or at least what they should feel. You don't devote your life to the human 22-car pileup known as American football nor do you reach this high of a level without having the utmost belief in your ability. The field is too competitive, and we've learned throughout history that talent can only take a player so far.

So teams should not be remotely discouraged by Austin's quote nor fans be fearful if their team takes the youngster. He's confident, but not in a way that would make him do sit-ups on his lawn. He's a young kid who believes in himself, which should be encouraging to all 32 franchises in attendance this weekend.

Will Austin be the best player in the 2013 draft? I highly doubt it. But his quote put him in the conversation, by hook or by crook.

Now it will just be up to Austin to prove himself not only in Indianapolis this weekend, but on the field next season.

Serena Williams shares picture of her swollen ankle

Serena Williams shared a picture on her Twitter account Wednesday night of her swollen right ankle and, as you can see, the area is massive in size. Williams didn?t add much context to the photo, only writing ?ouch? in her tweet. We don?t know when the picture was taken, but what we do know is that Williams rolled her right ankle during her first-round match at the Australian Open last week. She managed to reach the quarterfinals despite the ankle problem, but the swelling coupled with back spasms may have contributed to her three-set loss to Sloane Stephens on Wednesday in Melbourne. Schalke to appeal Galatasaray result over Drogba

Schalke says it will lodge a complaint with UEFA over the 1-1 draw at Galatasaray in the Champions League because of Didier Drogba's participation.

The dpa news agency says Schalke sports director Horst Heldt and finance chief Peter Peters confirmed they would appeal over the player's eligibility before boarding Thursday's return flight from Istanbul.

Schalke wants UEFA to examine Drogba's switch from Shanghai Shenhua to the Turkish side - despite FIFA provisionally clearing Drogba to play last week.

Shanghai Shenhua complained to FIFA that Drogba broke his contract. Drogba, who had a contract through 2014, claims he was not being paid his salary.

If FIFA ruless for Shanghai Shenhua, the sanctions could see Drogba banned and a transfer embargo imposed on Galatasaray.

Rebecca Marino, 22, Quits Professional Tennis Due to Depression, Cyberbullying

Rebecca Marino, a 22-year-old Canadian tennis player who has been ranked as high as 38th in the world in women?s professional tennis, is calling it quits. Her decision to quit the sport has nothing to do with injury or talent ? it?s because of cyberbullying, according to The Toronto Star. ?In a way I wish I hadn?t joined social media,? she admitted. Marino deleted both her Facebook and Twitter accounts earlier this week and explained to reporters viaconferencecall that shereceivedtweets that said she should ?go die? and to ?go burn in hell? and that she had cost bettors lots of money. ?It has been a difficult decision and one that I have not taken lightly,? she said in a conference call. ?After thinking long and hard about it, I realized that I do not have the passion or enjoyment to drive myself to the level of which I would like to be at in professional tennis. I have previously been to No. 38 on the WTA singles rankings, so I realize the amount of work and sacrifices that

Atlanta Braves: 3 Up and 3 Down

The 2012 season for the Atlanta Braves was one full of the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. The team started Opening Day looking to compete with the Philadelphia Phillies, who were looking to win their sixth straight NL East title. However, a familiar rival would emerge to fight the Braves for the rights to sit atop of the division, as the Washington Nationals backed up manager Davey Johnson?s words from the spring and quickly showed the rest of the MLB that they were a legitimate contender.
Powered by a great set of pitchers?both starting the games and waiting in the bullpen to get the job done?and a rejuvenated Chipper Jones, who had announced prior to the season that he would retire at its conclusion, the Braves fought the Nats long and hard as the year progressed, each fighting in a division that had quickly witnessed two teams separate themselves from an otherwise weak set of teams.

Despite the best efforts from the entire team, the Braves were unable to top the Nation...

Breaking Down the New England Patriots' Free-Agent Radar

For the better part of the past month, the New England Patriots and their staff have been cloistered in their offices like bishops in a conclave selecting the next pope.  The general public has no idea idea what goes on behind closed doors, and we won't know much more until players either sign or they don't.

Not surprisingly, nothing major has been accomplished as of yet.

For most of the Belichick-Brady era, the Patriots have operated as a well oiled machine.  Every offseason they replace the more heavily worn moving parts, tighten the nuts and bolts and fire that baby up again every September.

Of course, free agency throws a wrench into the whole system.  It represents not only losing key parts, but a unique opportunity to replace them with upgrades and newer models.  The key pieces in any machine inevitably break down and need replacing.

Sometimes, the newest models on the market provide a major upgrade and a universal fit to work with any system.  Sometimes the older models still represent the gold standard, like Goldeneye of the James Bond video game franchise, the '67 Chevy Camaro and Ed Reed playing safety.  Sometimes, despite the shiny luster of the newest item or the vintage appeal of a classic, a refurbished model provides the most value and best fit.

One man's trash is another man's treasure, and when NFL franchises feel buyer's remorse because their newest toy didn't perform the way they'd hoped, or simply can't afford the upkeep on their old classics, they send the very players they used to prize to the scrap heap.

A discerning general manager can sift through the rubbish and find those gems that just need a bit of polishing and plug them right into their system.

Here are 10 reclamation projects who the Patriots could dust off, insert into their system and have New England's football machine purring like a kitten this fall.

Pavel Datsyuk beats five Nashville Predators to score goal

Detroit Red Wings forward Pavel Datsyuk is simply amazing. The things he can do with a puck are absolutely astounding. He scored this incredible goal on Tuesday night against the Nashville Predators to tie the game late in the third period. Not many players have the ability to skate through five players and then beat one of the best goalies in the NHL. You could see Datsyuk really wanted this one by his uncharacteristic celebration. Unfortunately the Red Wings went on to lose in overtime, but not before Datsyuk made it interesting.

Alex Smith may help Dashon Goldson get his wish and become a free agent

According to Matt Maiocca of csnbayarea.com, the San Francisco 49ers don't know if they are going to franchise safety Dashon Goldson for a second straight year.

Goldson, who badly wants to test the free agent market, may get his chance if the 49ers don?t dump Alex Smith. The 49ers have to either cut Smith or trade him in order to franchise tag Goldson. Smith?s salary puts the 49ers over the cap, but they can?t trade him until March 12th at 4:00pm.

They have until March 4th to tag Goldson; however, they both can?t be on the roster on March 12th.

Either San Francisco will dump Smith getting no value for him, but the ability to tag Goldson. Vice versa, keep Smith and let Goldson walk.

Free Agency and the Draft are Full of Options for Eagles to Fix Secondary

The No.1 priority for Chip Kelly and the Philadelphia Eagles this offseason should be to revamp the defensive backfield. If you look at the Eagles unit by unit, there is no doubt that the secondaryis the group in need of the most repairs.
A few days ago, I provided some examples of other teams who remodeled their secondary in one offseason and showed tremendous improvement the following year. If you missed it, you can check that right here.
The reason I looked for examples of that is because I wondered how feasible it was to replace the starters in our entire secondary. That still might be a stretch (to replace all four guys), but there have been multiple teams who have replaced two or three out of their four starters.
With that said, there has to be a perfect storm of available free agents and/or drafting of the right players to fit the bill. Below is a look at some of the options Ifind most interestingshould the Eagles, in fact, make the wholesale changes that are needed?

Russell Martin to play shortstop during WBC

Getty Image
It has been a while since Russell Martin played thirdbase or second base yet he will try to play shortstop during the upcoming World Baseball Classic.
Martin, 30, has never played a game at shortstop.
?It?s not an easy decision,? Martin said. ?I?m doing it because I feel I owe it to the Canadian people to compete for my country, even if I have more of a world citizen-type attitude where I feel like we?re all in it together overall. It?s fun to compete. It makes for good baseball. People play for the passion.?
Martin says the Pirates have been supportive of him playing in the WBC even as the catcher attempts to play shortstop.
On team Canada?s roster he will join Justin Morneau, Brett Lawrie, Michael Saunders, John Axford, Jesse Crain and Jameson Taillon.

Five college basketball games to watch this week

Indiana (23-3) vs. Michigan State (22-4) Michigan State is one of the hottest teams in the country, fresh off wins versus Michigan and Nebraska. Indiana is coming off a blowout win over Purdue, but breakthrough guard Victor Oladipo suffered an ankle injury during the win. It will be interesting to see if Oladipo suits up versus a Spartans squad that is very tough at home. Don?t miss this one on Tuesday night. Kansas (21-4) vs. Oklahoma State (19-5) The last time these two teams met, Oklahoma State got the better of Kansas at Phog Allen Fieldhouse, ruining the Jayhawks? 33-game home winning-streak in the process. The Jayhawks then went on to lose another two games after that, but have recently bounced back by defeating Kansas State and Texas. Oklahoma State is riding Marcus Smart?s hot hand, as the star freshman is averaging 15 points, six rebounds, 4.5 assists, and three steals per game this year. This game will definitely be a great one between two of the Big 12?s top teams on Wedn...

The Program: What Alabama Needs to Focus on in Spring Practice

Alabama head coach Nick Saban has a 24-hour rule for celebrating victories. Now that the Crimson Tide have secured the 2012 BCS National Championship and the 2013 mythical recruiting championship, it's time for Saban and his crew to get to work on the 2013 season—and a possible three-peat.

With several key contributors gone off of the 2012 championship team, the Crimson Tide will have a new look when toe meets leather in the Georgia Dome versus Virginia Tech on Aug. 31.

What does Alabama need to work on this spring in preparation for the 2013 season?

College football analyst Marc Kohn and lead SEC writer Barrett Sallee break down the Crimson Tide in this edition of The Program.

Tribe?s offseason was made possible by low asking price for Bauer

The Cleveland Indians appeared to be resigned to the fact that another rebuilding process was on the horizon, having to unload their two All-Stars ? shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera and closer Chris Perez ? for MLB-ready prospects. Conversely, the team held on to both players while making a slew of free agent additions, and now sit with one of the more intriguing lineups in the American League.
Terry Pluto of The Cleveland Plain Dealer writes that this ? the $100+ million in free agent signings ? was set in motion once the Arizona Diamondbacks were willing to trade prospect pitcher Trevor Bauer without the Indians having to include Cabrera in the deal.
?Many fans thinkthe team?s change of direction began with the hiring of veteran manager Terry Francona,? Pluto writes. ?That certainly signaled a new way of doing business. But what really energized the Tribe was trading Shin-Soo Choo to acquire Drew Stubbs and pitching prospect Trevor Bauer.

What's wrong with Roush Fenway?

Where is the Roush Fenway Racing organization that led the points for 21 of the first 26 races before the Chase for the Sprint Cup began?

Greg Biffle and Matt Kenseth were so incredibly consistent throughout the regular season that it's hard to believe that the two Roush Fenway Racing entries competing in NASCAR's "playoffs" now sit in the Chase cellar after the first three races.

Yes, you can say that Roush has never been competitive at Chicagoland Speedway. And no, the organization hasn't quite been gangbusters at New Hampshire. But this is Dover for goodness sakes, a track where Jack Roush has nine wins, most recently with Kenseth last year.

But on Sunday, Roush's most recent winner asked if his crew "was trying to kill" him after a truck arm broke off the back of the No. 17 - for a second time on Lap 317. From Kenseth's first pit stop, however, he was already off the lead lap. And his future teammates Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin added insult to injury every time

Nadal Says So Paulo Clay Courts are Much Faster Than U.S. Open and Australian Open

By Barbara Galiza (February 16, 2013) So Paulo ? Before this week, Martin Alund had never won an ATP-tour level match before, but today he managed to take a slow Rafael Nadal to a third set. The former number one took two hours to beat the Argentinean and advance to the So Paulo final. Beckham must wait before making PSG debut

David Beckham will have to wait at least one more week to make his debut for Paris Saint-Germain because his coach says he needs to get in better shape.

Coach Carlo Ancelotti ruled out the 37-year-old former England captain for Sunday's match against Sochaux in the French league.

Nick Saban takes on critics who think Alabama has more running backs than it needs.

Alabama head football coach Nick Saban knows what you're thinking. He knows you think Alabama signed too many running backs on National Signing Day. He knows you think T.J. Yeldon and Kenyan are more than enough for the Crimson Tide. Worse, he knows why you think Alabama doesn't need more RB's than just Yeldon and Kenyan.

?To
me, to have really good depth at running back, you need five really
good players. Three guys usually play a lot,? Saban said.

?So, I know in your little fantasy football world...?

It
was at that point of the answer when Saban?s intensity peaked. He

?Several of these guys we recruited,? he said, ?are going to have lots of opportunity to contribute this year.?

Regan Smith to drive for Phoenix Racing

Regan Smith and Kurt Busch are trading places - at least for now.

Smith, 29, will drive the No. 51 Phoenix Racing Chevrolet at Charlotte Motor Speedway while Busch takes over the seat in the No. 78 Furniture Row Chevrolet for the remainder of the season and on to next year.

"We're looking forward to having Regan in our car," said Phoenix Racing general manager Steve Barkdoll. "Regan performed the tire test at Kansas and that should be helpful at intermediate tracks. We believe he can help get our program back on track and help attract sponsorship going forward."

Smith has competed in NASCAR since 2002 and in the Sprint Cup Series since 2007. His sole official win came last year at Darlington Raceway, but Smith came incredibly close to his first victory here at Talladega in the fall of 2008. However, in NASCAR's judgment, Smith was dropped from first to 18th after the race for passing below the yellow line to advance his position.

Team to hold Rubio water night

The biggest political scandal of 2013 involves United States junior Senator Marco Rubio and a water bottle. You may have seen the possible 2016 Presidential hopeful take a few swigs of water during the republican response to President Obama?s State of the Union address. Anyway, like any halfway decent Minor League Baseball marketing department would do, the Fort Meyers Miracle plan to capitalize off of their state senator?s taboo moment by hosting a Marco Rubio Water Bottle Giveaway Night at some point this season. Of course, they are. The Miracle are a Single-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins, and the idea can from the noggin of team president Steve Gliner: ?The idea really came about while I was watching The Today Show,? Gliner told Off the Bench. ?They had a two-minute recap of all the late night humor about the water bottle incident, and it seemed like a fun thing to get in on, since Rubio is based in Florida and it?s in the news.? Well, they are moving out of the Metrodome for a flashy new indoor stadium, but before they do they have decided the time has come to update their Norseman logo. And when I say update, I mean going from version 1.0 to 1.01. Check out the drastic differences: Very exciting stuff, right? You have to wonder if Zygy Wilf hired one of his grand kids to use photoshop to update it. I only say that because it costs thousands of dollars to have graphic designers. Obviously, $5-$10 grand is pocket change to an NFL owner, but seriously, look at that thing. LOOK AT IT! The horns are not as long, and the braided hair has been shorten a bit as well. NFL Draft 2013: Ranking Top Receivers With Round 1 Potential

Cordarrelle Patterson has emerged as the top wide receiver in the 2013 NFL draft, but he's not the only player at his position likely to be taken in Round 1.

Evaluating college receivers can be tricky, since the college game differs so much from the NFL. Quarterback talent is stretched thin in the college ranks, and as a result, college coaches have long come up with creative ways to move the chains.

This means production isn't a reliable benchmark when projecting how a college receiver will translate to the NFL.

For instance, Patterson only played one year of Division I ball at Tennessee, and he caught just 46 passes for 778 yards and five touchdowns. When you compare his stats to what Terrance Williams accomplished, he doesn't come close to matching up.

So how do the potential first-round receivers stack up?

1. Cordarrelle Patterson, Tennessee

Think A.J. Green without the polish.

Patterson is the most naturally gifted athlete at the receiver position in this year's draft class. He explodes off the line, transitions in and out of his breaks with ease and has blazing speed to get over the top of defenses in a hurry.

Additionally, Patterson has the ability to make defenders miss in the open field, thanks to excellent instincts and lateral mobility.

He won't be a complete receiver right out of the gates, but he'll become a deep threat teams won't be able to ignore from Day 1, making him a dangerous addition to a receiver-needy team.

Projected Draft Pick: No. 12 overall to the Miami Dolphins

2. Terrance Williams, Baylor

Williams was highly productive in his final two years at Baylor, catching 156 passes (97 in 2012) for 2,789 yards (1,832 in 2012) and 23 touchdowns (12 in 2012).

At 6'3" and 210 pounds, he's slightly bigger than Patterson, who is a bit lankier.

Williams brings more experience and is a bit more polished, but his raw athleticism doesn't quite add up to what Patterson brings to the table.

Williams has the tools to become an excellent pro, but he must develop better habits and a sense of urgency when route running. He must also work diligently to improve his hands, which let him down at times.

Projected Draft Pick: No. 22 overall to the St. Louis Rams

3. Keenan Allen, California

During the 2012 season, Allen was considered by most experts to be the top receiver of this year's draft class. An injury to his PCL in early November kept him out of the rest of the season, though, and during that time his stock has slipped.

Allen is a more polished route runner than Patterson or Williams and he possesses excellent hands.

The drawback when considering Allen is that he doesn't possess the same game-breaking speed as the previous two receivers, and he projects as more of a possession receiver at the next level.

That being said, his ability to make plays after the catch reminds me of Michael Crabtree, who has begun to emerge as a No. 1 receiver for the San Francisco 49ers.

Projected Draft Pick: No. 23 overall to the Minnesota Vikings

4. Tavon Austin, West Virginia

The previous three receivers are all roughly the same size, at 6'3" and between 205-to-210 pounds. Not so with Austin, who measures in at 5'9" and 175 pounds.

Austin is a Darren Sproles-type player who will create matchup nightmares for opposing defenses in the NFL, but he won't ever be a legitimate No. 1 receiver.

He possesses blazing speed, video game-like agility, lateral mobility and elusiveness, and his ability to make defenders miss in the open field is jaw dropping.

Austin is also a tremendous weapon on special teams and his lack of size won't hinder him from becoming a dangerous player in the NFL.

Projected Draft Pick: No. 29 overall to the New England Patriots
