Strikeforce Preview: If Kharitonov Wins Tourney Where Does He Rank Among UFC HW

If Sergei Kharitonov Wins The Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix Where Would He Rank Among The UFC Heavyweights?

Sergei Kharitonov makes his Strikeforce debut this Saturday night against Andrei Arlovski in a heavyweight tournament quarterfinal matchup.

He has competed with Dream for the last two years, and Pride for years before that. He sports an impressive record of 17-4, including a KO victory over Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion Alistair Overeem in 2007 and decision victory over Fabricio Werdum in 2005.

He has not been impressive in his last three fights, despite a 2-1 record. He defeated two journeyman fighters, and lost to a 40-year old Jeff Monson.

If he were able to win the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix, his stock would rise obviously, but how much would depend on who he fights.

I can't see him drastically moving up the ranks, even with a win in this tournament. He is on the easier side of the bracket, and the four men on the other side (Fedor-Silva, Overeem-Werdum) will likely knock each other around.

I would put him in the top 10 among UFC Heavyweights, but he would be near the bottom. Most likely he would fall somewhere in between Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Ben Rothwell and Stefan Struve.

He would have to prove a little bit more to be considered a top-tier heavyweight fighter among the UFC guys, even if he wins this Grand Prix.
