Manchester United Transfer News: Sir Alex Smart to Push for Dortmund's Kagawa

Don't expect Sir Alex Ferguson to spend much time dwelling on Manchester United's lost season.

Unless, of course, he's looking to upgrade the Red Devils for a rebound run at the English Premier League title next season. In that case, he's already off to a solid start, with a doting eye (or two) toward Borussia Dortmund.

According to John Edwards of the Daily Mail, Fergie was in Berlin to see Dortmund dominate Bayern Munich in the DFB-Pokal final, with a particular interest in Shinji Kagawa. The 23-year-old Japan international scored the opening goal in what may well have been his final appearance for the Westphalians. Kagawa has been linked to United for some time now, amidst suggestions that he wants to leave the Bundesliga for the EPL.

Kagawa would certainly be a worthy addition to Sir Alex's side. The attacking midfielder finished with 17 goals and 13 assists in 43 appearances for the Borussians this season and would bring a semblance of fitness and stability to a group at Old Trafford that was ravaged by injury, illness and age.

Fergie was left with little choice but to summon the great Paul Scholes out of his brief retirement after Tom Cleverley, Anderson and Darren Fletcher were knocked out of competition throughout their campaign.

United have also been mentioned in relation to Robert Lewandoski and Mats Hummels, Kagawa's Dortmund teammates, though Hans-Joachim Watzke, the club's managing director, appears less inclined to let either of those two leave just yet.

"We expect Kagawa to go, but no amount of money will persuade us to sell the others," Watzke stated.

United's need for a striker like Lewandoski is far less pronounced, what with Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck, Chicharito and Dimitar Berbatov already on the squad. Hummels, on the other hand, would serve to strengthen a central defense that's in some peril amidst Nemanja Vidic's knee injury, Jonny Evans' poor play in his stead, and Rio Ferdinand's age and declining form.

That being said, if Fergie is able to land "only" Kagawa's signature, he will nonetheless be off to a solid start in his quest to unseat Manchester City and perch United back atop the Premier League.
