Niners hire Mangini as consultant
Eric Mangini is reportedly leaving ESPN, where he?s been an analyst for the past two seasons, to get back into coaching as a member of Jim Harbaugh?s 49ers staff in the role of senior offensive consultant. You?re probably asking, ?But wait, isn?t Mangini a defensive-minded coach?? Yes, but he?s being brought on to use that background to help give the offense a defensive perspective. It?s a new position on Harbaugh?s coaching staff. Mangini is coming off two less-than-spectacular head coaching stints with the Jets (23-26) and more recently with the Browns (10-22). In his defense, they?re the Jets and the Browns. Mangini is still regarded one of the better defensive minds in football and was a capable analyst on ESPN, which you can?t say for a lot of folks at the four-letter. Oh, and in case you were wondering, the 49ers do not have Bill Belichick on the schedule. [via Cam Inman; photo via]
