Jones knocks in a rebound in OT

David Jones knocked in a rebound 3:51 into overtime to lift the Colorado Avalanche past the Calgary Flames 2-1 on Tuesday night.

Miikka Kiprusoff turned away a shot from Paul Stastny, but the rebound trickled away. Jones skated in and drove the puck into the net, giving the Avalanche their first win in five games against the Flames this season. It was Kiprusoff's first loss in 11 starts against Colorado.

Colorado had a chance to get the lead with about 3 1/2 minutes left in regulation but Ryan O'Reilly's shot from in close hit the crossbar and bounced away. O'Reilly's nose was bloodied on the play when defenseman Mark Giordano's stick caught him across the face. O'Reilly was tended to at the bench and continued playing.

Matt Stajan gave Calgary a 1-0 lead in the first period. Stastny tied it later in the period.

Giordano fired a shot at the end of regulation, but Semyon Varlamov came up with a nifty save to send the game into overtime.

Jarome Iginla shook loose on breakaways late in the first period and midway through the second, but was frustrated both times by Varlamov, who made 31 saves and extended his winning streak to five games. Varlamov dropped to his knees to stuff Iginla's first shot, and turned the second away with his stick to keep the game tied.

After a turnover in the Avalanche zone less than two minutes into the game, Stajan picked up a loose puck and beat Varlamov with a wrist shot that got through between his pads.

Colorado tied it at 9:05 when Stastny redirected Shane O'Brien's shot from the point past Kiprusoff. It was Stastny's second goal in two games.

NOTES: Stajan has at least one point in seven of eight games. . . . Calgary defenseman Jay Bouwmeester has the longest active ironman streak in the NHL at 580 consecutive games. . . . Colorado killed all three of Calgary's power plays.
