Notre Dame Football: The Pursuit of Excellence Never Sleeps

Anyone that thinks that the Notre Dame football season ended with a victory over the University of Miami in the Sun Bowl on the afternoon of New Year's Eve is sorely mistaken. Sorely mistaken, as they said in Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

What has transpired in the later part of this past week is the stuff of legends. A surprise visit by defensive coordinator Bob Diaco, to the Brooklyn, NY home of highly sought-after Ishaq Williams at 4:30 Friday morning kicked off the past 48 hours.

Now that some of the dust has settled it appears that Williams was set to announce Penn State as his school of choice at the Army All-American Bowl last Saturday. Thankfully, he had second thoughts.

I can picture the scene: Ishaq and his dad are loading the car with those annoying Joe Paterno masks early Friday morning and out of the shadows on a dark Brooklyn street comes Bob Diaco. Signed, sealed and delivered. Williams becomes Notre Dame's first 5-star catch of the cycle. As an early enrollee Williams will be starting his Notre Dame career on Tuesday the 18.

Coach Kelly tweeted on Friday that the players that were back on campus stopped by his office, no doubt to talk. The majority of the team and student body will be returning to Notre Dame on Sunday.

In the wake of all the excitement over Ishaq Williams, all eyes turned to Aaron Lynch, who was making an official visit over the weekend. At roughly noon on Saturday, Aaron Lynch committed to the Irish. There are those that questioned Lynch's tactics during the recruiting process but for a young man that was about to make the biggest decision of his life, Lynch's thoroughness should be seen as a blessing. Lynch is also an early enrollee.

Not to be lost on these new developments is the big news earlier in the week when Michael Floyd announced his decision to return for his senior season. There had been much speculation as to what Floyd would decide, and in the end it was Michael Floyd's choice to make.

His statement that going to Notre Dame was a 40-year decision and not a four-year decision seemed to be a big part in this return. Floyd has been described as a complex individual so whatever his choice was to be, it is likely that he investigated every scenario, and came up with the best solution for him and his family.

During a week that could have been quiet at Notre Dame with most of the students still home on break, it seems that the excitement never stopped. Irish equipment manager Ryan Grooms stated that the face masks have arrived and are ready for spring ball. Football season never ends in South Bend.
