As NASCAR Nation was still rejoicing over the 53rd Daytona 500, a race won by 20-year old Trevor Bayne, the youngest driver ever to win the Daytona 500, a 39-year old named Jeff Gordon was making a return trip to victory lane after a near two-year absence.
Many felt Gordon's winless streak, which had reached a career high 66-races, would continue for some time due to the likes of young drivers like Bayne - and others.
With drivers like Joey Logano, Regan Smith, Brad Kesolowski, and the reigning Daytona 500 champ Bayne, it sure seemed this would be the case. In borrowing a line from the great Lee Corso, "not so fast my friends". I imagine this might have been the battle cry for every Sprint Cup Series veteran heading to Phoenix. At least it was for Gordon.
