LSU Football: Top Tight End Recruit Has LSU at the Top of His List

DeSean Smith is not your average tight end.

The four-star prospect out of Lake Charles, La. is considered by many to be one of, if not the top tight end prospect in the 2013 national recruiting class.

Standing at 6'4", 225 pounds, Smith has the ideal height and size to be a dominant force at the tight end position. He hauled in 40 passes for 774 yards and scored seven touchdowns last year during his junior season at Barbe High School.

With the recent trend of bigger tight ends being used more in the passing game, there is a number of top-notch college programs who would love to add Smith to their program next year. Fortunately for Les Miles and his staff at LSU, Smith has made it clear that the Tigers are at the top of his list, as of right now.

"I went to their spring game and just loved it," Smith told ESPN.com's Jamie Newberg."I loved how they threw the ball around. Quarterback Zach Mettenberger is looking great. What they are doing in the passing game is very appealing to a guy like me. They are the leader.”

This is great news for Miles and his staff, especially because Smith is an in-state kid and Miles has made it a point this year to make sure that he puts a fence around the state of Louisiana and locks up all of the top talent in the state.

As of now, the Tigers have received nine verbal commitments for their 2013 class and all of them are in-state prospects.

ESPNU recently released their top 150 rankings for the class of 2013 this past week. Smith is ranked as the No. 137 player in the nation for that class and the No. 4 tight end prospect in the country.

On the other end of the spectrum, rivals.com ranks Smith as the No. 55 player in the nation for 2013 and the No. 3 tight end in the nation.

LSU is at the top of Smith's list, but other top-notch programs such as Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Miami (Fla.), Cal and Notre Dame are also in the running for Smith's talents.

According to Newberg, Smith plans to announce his college decision in January, during the U.S. Army All-American Game.
