Pablo Sandoval swung at the first pitch he saw in the season's second half. Surprised?
Sandoval also smoked the pitch into right field for a line-drive, first-inning single off San Diego's Aaron Harang . The single stretched Sandoval's hitting streak to 22 games, the longest by a Giants player since Jack Clark hit safely in 26 consecutive games in 1978. That's the San Francisco record.
Sandoval's streak also is the fourth longest in the majors this season, behind Andre Ethier of the Dodgers 30, Hunter Pence of the Astros 23 and Ryan Braun of the Brewers 23 and counting.
"Hopefully, he keeps this thing going," manager Bruce Bochy said. "Once you get past 20 games, you start watching it and getting more attention."
Sanchez on track: Giants manager Bruce Bochy might soon have a surplus of starting pitchers on his hands.
Jonathan Sanchez , sidelined since June 24 with biceps tendinitis, faced hitters for the first time since then Wednesday. He threw 32 pitches in a simulated game, pitching to teammates Mark DeRosa , Andres Torres and Emmanuel Burriss .
Sanchez expects to make a rehabilitation start Sunday for Class A San Jose, then one more minor-league start for Triple-A Fresno. That would put him on track to rejoin the Giants in Philadelphia July 26-28.
As for how he will fit Sanchez into the rotation, Bochy said, "Those things have a way of working themselves out. Even if everyone's healthy, maybe it will be time to give someone a break."
Riggleman on board: Former Nationals manager Jim Riggleman joined the Giants in San Diego. General manager Brian Sabean hired Riggleman as a scout, saying, "He knows the league as well as anybody."
Riggleman abruptly resigned in Washington on June 24, upset because the club hadn't picked up his contract option for next season. He will handle a mix of advance scouting and special assignments.
Throw them back: The Padres showed a scoreboard video tribute of former manager Dick Williams before Thursday night's game. Then they wore brown throwback uniforms from 1983 to honor Williams, who died last week. Nice video. Ugly uniforms.
