Wes Welker is in between a rock and a hard place. On one hand he has to keep his best interests concerning his contract status in focus. On the other, he just wants to be with his team when they begin off season activities on April 16th.
In order to do so he would have to sign the franchise tender the Patriots slapped on him worth 9.5 million dollars. However, if he does so, he ends his quest for a longer term contract and one tool players have is holding out. The hold out isn’t what Welker wants, he doesn’t want to be seen as a distraction or miss time.
These financial tactics can send a working relationship for a world of hurt and Welker knows it. As reported by Shalise Manza-Young of the Boston Globe, Welker is unsure of what direction he’ll go in. Welker stated:
