The Rich Get Richer, What Kris Vertseeg Means to the Rangers

yes philadelphia - you have a hockey team
Apparently, the Flyers have infinite cap space, or at least it seems that way.

The Flyers acquired former nemesis Kris Vertseeg from the Maple Leafs for a 1st and a 3rd round draft pick. Besides the obvious implications that the team to beat in the Eastern Conference just got even stronger, the trade itself likely has some consequences as well.

Versteeg is a good all around player who is fresh off a championship with the Blackhawks. He's also signed into next year for a reasonable cap hit. But the fact that Brian Burke was able to squeeze two high level picks - most importantly the first rounder - for him adds credence to the fact that prices are steep this trade deadline. First round draft picks have been thrown around like halloween candy so far as Brian Murray was able to get his Senators a first rounder for Mike Fisher a few days earlier.

Sather has already said that he won't 'give up a valuable piece' but he feels t...

Ray Allen is a black hole, Rondo is crazy unselfish

Basketball Reference put together an interesting list today.

It's a list of guards who pass the ball the least (30 minutes per game minimum).

Nick Young of the Wizards is the most allergic to passing... which is NO surprise to anyone who has watched the NBA regularly this season. As noted in the piece, Kevin Martin might be worse because he touches the ball a lot more and he is passing it almost as infrequently.

Ray Allen is actually 11th on the list, right behind Kobe Bryant. But Ray is passing the ball 50.4% of the time... so he's shooting roughly the half the time he touches the ball. This is more of an example of how you can make stats say a lot of things. He touches the ball half as much as Kobe and is still passing it half the time. Meanwhile, his job is too shoot. Ray isn't in the game to set his teammates up.

Regardless... he's on the list. Care to guess who is at the bottom of the list?

Rajon Rondo touches the ball more than any guard w...

UEFA Champions League: Rafael Van der Vaart, Peter Crouch Earn Honors For Tottenham Hotspur Against AC Milan

Headed into one of the more important games in Tottenham Hotspur team history with a depleted roster, the North London side was going to have to execute a perfect game plan to hopefully steal a goal away from home against AC Milan Tuesday in the first leg of the Champions League knockout phase.
Harry Redknapp?s boys clearly understood what was expected of them at the San Siro, and came out of the gates as the stronger side; dominating the first half offensively.
As expected, Milan exited out of the locker room at half time with more purpose and intent to take the game to their English opponents. Tottenham?s defense was beginning to bend as the game wore on, but they never broke. Almost exactly has Redknapp had drawn it up, Tottenham got the game?s only goal in a jail-break counter attack and a spectacular piece of play from Aaron Lennon who beat his defender near the box to find a wide open Peter Crouch. A simple touch was all that was needed to slot the ball home ...

Tiger Tees it Up in Dubai with Serviceman

Tiger WoodsLt. Col. Michael Rowells, a nine handicap, found himself shanking balls from the rough and dropping shots into the water Wednesday in Dubai. The serviceman was nervous and rattled by his surroundings.

The reason? His playing partner was Tiger Woods.

Rowells beat 16,000 other golfers in a draw and was given the opportunity to play with Woods. Stationed in Afghanistan, Rowells had to scramble in order to get a passport and borrowed a set of golf clubs from Emirates Golf Club.

"I came in wanting to play decent and I really didn't," Rowells said. "But it didn't matter. The experience was so far beyond what my score would have been. The time with Tiger, and the time here at Emirates Golf Club, has just been tremendous regardless of how many balls I put in the water."

Though his overall game was lacking, Rowells was able to cozy up a few approach shots and drain some long par putts during the round, drawing some praise from one of the world's top golfers.

Woods is familiar with the military, as his father did a couple of tours in Vietnam, so the two spoke mainly about Rowells' service.

"He understands the services, and that is always a plus," Rowells said. "A lot of people don't quite understand what we do. I think he has decent respect for the military and that is always nice. We spoke a little about his dad, some of the places he had been, like Fort Bragg, where I'll be ending up in the next year and a half or so."

Overall, Rowells with smitten with the experience and left impressed by the golfer, who has been dealing with some trying circumstances over the past year.

"I played with a Tiger that struck the ball very well, was a complete gentleman, a class act, easygoing and put me at ease," he said. "One of the larger-than-life figures was very down to earth and very accommodating to somebody that came in to do this."

Pondering the Future of Zach Parise

For the New Jersey Devils and in fact, the entire NHL, the 2010 off-season was consumed by one major storyline ? the future of Ilya Kovalchuk. The speculation of where the Russian sniper would end up went on for months until finally (after having one of their offers to Kovalchuk rejected by the NHL for salary cap circumvention) the Devils, Kovalchuk and the league agreed to the terms on a deal that would pay him $100 million over the next 15 years. However what fans have yet to realize is how much the Kovalchuk deal will directly affect the Devils future. Specifically with the resigning of superstar left winger Zach Parise. With only 15 players under contract for next season the Devils still need to fill 12 or 13 roster spots for 2011-2012 and they have just over $9 million in cap space to do so. So where exactly does Parise fit in?As the franchise player on 20-plus teams in the league its likely Parise will want a franchise-player contract that would be long term and pay him upward...
