Davis Love III to Be Named New US Ryder Cup Team Captain
Filed under: Ryder Cup
Davis Love III is next up as U.S. captain in the Ryder Cup.Two officials involved with the selection process confirm that Love will be the captain in 2012. They spoke on condition of anonymity because the official announcement was not until Thursday at Medinah, site of the next Ryder Cup.
Reports out of Europe indicate Jose Maria Olazabal of Spain will be announced as captain Tuesday at the Abu Dhabi Championship.
Love played on six teams, and he faced Olazabal in his first Ryder Cup match in 1993 at The Belfry. Love and Tom Kite defeated Olazabal and Seve Ballesteros in that opening session, although Olazabal's team won the other four times they played.
Love was a vice captain when Europe won last October in Wales.

Accidental Collisions Cause Major Rise in NHL Concussions
Filed under: Blues, Coyotes, Sabres, Stars, Thrashers, NHL All Star Game, NHL Injuries
RALEIGH, N.C. -- There has been a threefold increase in games lost due to concussions suffered through accidental collisions in the NHL this season, an alarming trend commissioner Gary Bettman noted before the NHL SuperSkills competition at RBC Center on Saturday.
"The ideal number of concussions would be zero," Bettman said. "Our objective would be to come as close as possible to get that result without changing the fundamentals of our game. We are doing whatever possible to limit the amount of concussions."
Concussions suffered in fights and through hits delivered to the body where a player's head then strikes the glass, boards or ice have also increased this season. Bettman refused to disclose the specific numbers.
He added that the number of concussions from blindside hits to the head was down, largely due to the rule implemented last March that barred such collisions. Hits to the head deemed legal under NHL rules have also resulted in fewer man games lost, according to Bettman.

Boston Celtics Kevin Garnett Gets Ejected In Blow Out Loss To Suns
I would love to tell you that it was a great Suns defense that held Boston to only 58 points entering the fourth quarter and 34 percent shooting for the game. However, that is not the case. The team had no legs under them and front rimmed shot after shot. There was no attacking the rim from Boston. Granted the point of attacking would have been for aesthetics only because the NBA r...

"Stone Cold" Steve Austin Set To Host WWE Tough Enough
Entertainment Weekly is reporting that "Stone Cold" Steve Austin will be hosting the re-birth of WWE's reality contest series, Tough Enough.
The show will premiere on the USA Network on Monday, April 4, 2011, after Monday Night Raw.
Among his many accolades in World Wrestling Entertainment, Austin was a six-time WWE Champion, and the only three-time winner of the Royal Rumble match. Austin won back-to-back Rumble matches in 1997 and 1998, and completed the trifecta with his third Rumble victory in 2001.
Austin retired from WWE in 2003 due to various knee and neck injuries that he endured during his career, and was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2009.
Alumni from Tough Enough have gone on to make major strides in WWE. Despite being the runner-up in the million dollar contest, Mike "The Miz" Mizanin has gone on to win the the United States Championship twice, along with co-holding the WWE and World Tag Team titles. The Miz currently rules the roost on Raw as the WWE Champion.
John Morrison has gone on from winning Tough Enough III to winning the ECW Championship, co-holding the WWE and World Tag Team Championships and capturing the Intercontinental Championship on three occasions. Morrison is the only Tough Enough winner currently wrestling in WWE.
Josh Mathews has parlayed his appearance on Tough Enough to become the longest tenured WWE employee from the entire cast. Mathews signed with WWE in 2002, and has held positions as an interviewer and announcer on various WWE shows such as ECW, NXT, Velocity and Superstars.
Mathews is currently the play-by-play announcer on Smackdown.

Champ Bailey Sets Cornerbacks' Record by Being Named to 10th Pro Bowl
Filed under: Broncos, AFC West
Denver Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey had a Pro Bowl-caliber season. Now he has the Pro Bowl berth to go with it.Bailey was notified Thursday that he would be the replacement for Raiders cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha on the AFC Pro Bowl roster. Asomugha had to withdraw because of medical reasons.
The selection to the Pro Bowl was Bailey's 10th in a 12-year career, the most in NFL history at the cornerback position. He broke a tie with pro football Hall of Famer Michael Haynes, who had nine.
"I'm very excited to represent the AFC and the Broncos at the Pro Bowl," Bailey said in a statement released by the team. "It's a great honor to play on the same field with the NFL's best."

San Diego Padres: 2011 Season Preview and Predictions
The 2010 season abruptly ended for the San Diego Padres, who were hungry for a postseason berth. The Pads fell one game short of forcing a tie in the NL West, and needed to sweep the Giants or have the Braves be swept instead. Sadly, the Padres finished second in the West, and could not qualify for the wild card position.
The San Diego Padres made countless roster changes in the 2010 offseason, which began with a jaw dropping trade. Cameron Maybin, a 24 year old center fielder from Florida, was acquired by the Padres in exchange for two relievers from the best bullpen in the Majors.
Another trade occurred on December 6th, when Adrian Gonzalez, San Diego Padres' slugger, was traded to GM Jed Hoyer's former team: the Boston Red Sox. Padres fans were expecting big names in return, like CF Jacoby Ellsbury or CP Jonathan Papelbon. Instead, the Padres got prospects, including Casey Kelly. Most people don't know who he was, however. Kelly was named a top baseball prospect and has won countless awards in the Minor League system.
The Padres have also signed a few big names this offseason. Hoyer has inked contracts with: SP Aaron Harang, INF Orlando Hudson, and RP Chad Qualls. Jason Bartlett and Rob Johnson were also acquired in trades.
Despite big gains, the Padres have also lost leadership and talent this offseason. David Eckstein and Miguel Tejada, two main pieces in the infield, were not re-signed. The brothers Scott and Jerry Hairston are also not returning, and son of Padre great Tony Gwynn, Jr. was also not signed to a new deal.
Some fans find the new lineup frustrating, because so many faces are gone, replaced by new ones. These fans must understand that the payroll is tight, and Jed Hoyer is doing the best with what he has.
In 2011, the Padres must do many things to replicate the unthinkable playoff run that occurred a season before. First of all, the Padres must hit successfully with runners on base, especially with runners in scoring position. Last year, the Padres left runners on base countless times. Potential runs were not scored. Believe it or not, this was the main reason why the Padres lost games in 2010. If the bats can produce hits in clutch situations, the chances of victory increase for the Friars.
The Padres must also continue the great work in the bullpen. The Padres 'pen was the best in the MLB last year. Despite some losses, the Padres still have main pieces returning in 2011, with some new additions. Also, many prospects or Minor Leaguers in the Padres system are ready for MLB action. There is always room for flourishing Minor League stars on the Pads' roster.
The team must also find a leader who can emerge and fill the enormous gap left by Adrian Gonzalez. Adrian was the Team Captain, no doubt. As a San Diego native, Gonzalez led the team in offense and defense, however, lacked in enthusiasm. Especially with other veteran leadership leaving, like Tejada and Eckstein, the Padres must search from within to find their Captain.
Most of the Padres lineup and roster are young. Many of the players 30 and older are new additions, like Orlando Hudson, Jason Bartlett, and Brad Hawpe. If one of these players can put up monstrous numbers to begin the 2011 campaign, they could become the Team Captain, which is needed in San Diego.
Most importantly, the Padres need fan support. For much of the early part of 2010, the average attendance of a Padre game stood at around 19,000. Petco Park holds 42,000 people. When the Padres started to look "for real" in the NL West, attendance soared into the 30,000's. In 2011, fan support is key for the Padres.
If the Padres could replicate the miraculous run from 2010, the Friars' chances of playing October baseball are great. Despite a rather new lineup, the Padres still have great pitching, and a few sleeper players who could step up.
My player to watch in 2011 is Nick Hundley, San Diego Padres Catcher. He calls a great game behind the dish, and had some clutch moments in 2010 that show promise for this young player.
Watch out for Jason Bartlett, who is in for another All Star year in the infield. Bartlett is a tough out who gets on base frequently and scores runs often. The man playing by his side, Orlando Hudson, is also a guy who can deliver RBIs for San Diego. This could be a successful one-two punch in the infield.
The Padres will replicate another spectacular run in 2011. Even though they will not win the West, they will finish runner up and clinch a spot in the playoffs via Wild Card. The Padres will finish the 2011 season with a 94-68 record, winning the majority of their games at home.

Mark Ingram 2011 NFL Draft Scouting Report
Height: 5?10? | Weight: 215lbs | Alabama
Acceleration/Burst/Quickness: Quick burst to attack the line of scrimmage. Good acceleration in 5 and 10-yard splits. Decent lateral agility, but excels at making one cut and squaring his shoulders to the line of scrimmage. Will not dance. Is a very patient runner who does a great job finding holes.
Ball Protection: Only two fumbles in three seasons at Alabama. Excellent ball security. Fumbles will not be an issue in the NFL. Has a strong grip and excellent placement when securing the ball.
Elusiveness/Feet/Agility: Does a great job of keeping his feet moving. Is not elusive in the open field. Will make one cut and lower his shoulders. Good enough agility, but is a classic power runner who does not try to shake defenders.
Pass Catching: Good hands. Used primarily in screen packages. Does a good job locating the ball and bringing it in to his body. Does not let the ball get inside him.
Pass Blocking: Is a willing b...
Brent Grimes Deserves Pro Bowl Nod Without Scorn From Falcons' Fans
Filed under: Atlanta Falcons, NFC South
What do the Atlanta Falcons really think about their cornerbacks, Dunta Robinson and Brent Grimes? The Falcons were 13-3 in the regular season with steady play from Grimes and Robinson, but when Aaron Rodgers shredded Atlanta in a playoff game for 366 yards it opened a debate.
Robinson, who came to Atlanta as a free agent in 2010, has one interception in two seasons. Grimes had five interceptions, but opponents obviously felt they could go after him targeting Grimes 119 times, which was an NFL high.
Grimes was just named to the Pro Bowl to replace Green Bay's Charles Woodson, who has more important things to prepare for than the inconsequential, waste-of-time Pro Bowl. With the Buccaneers' Aqib Talib injured, Grimes should be in the Pro Bowl as a replacement.
If you look at the statistics, Grimes had a good season defending a franchise-high 23 passes and coming up with the team-leading five interceptions.

The Last Shall Be First
It's very hard to pick the worst player in the league. We have excluded rookies because that's just not fair. Also, contract size was not taken into account, or else this would turn into an exercise in showing off and saying stuff like "imagine him in four years!" about mid-level guys. We are going on pure gut here.

Martin Kaymer Grows Lead to Five Strokes at Abu Dhabi Championship
Filed under: European Tour
ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates (AP) -- Defending champion Martin Kaymer extended his lead at the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship to five strokes over Rory McIlroy after shooting a 6-under 66 in the third round on Saturday.Kaymer, the 2010 PGA Championship winner, birdied three of his last four holes to total 18-under 198 at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club.
"The great thing is I've made only one bogey so far, and that was the first day," Kaymer said. "I played very consistently. I've made a lot of birdies the last three days."
McIlroy finished birdie-eagle for a 65 to move into second place.
David Lynn of England (67) is at 204, two strokes ahead of Race to Dubai leader Charl Schwartzel of South Africa (71) and Alexander Noren of Sweden (67).
U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell struggled with putting and finished with a 71. Paul Casey of England (67) made a hole-in-one at the 12th.
Four-time major winner Phil Mickelson was 3 under at the turn, only to make four bogeys on the back nine. He shot a 72 and trails the leader by 15 strokes. Top-ranked Lee Westwood had a 73 and is tied for 65th.
Kaymer beat McIlroy by two shots in last year's tournament, and the Northern Irishman is aware he faces a challenge on Sunday.
"Kaymer is very, very good on this golf course," McIlroy said. "He's always good when leading from the front as well, so I'm going to have a difficult time to try and catch him."

Keselowski Fastest At Daytona As Preseason Testing Concludes
Richard Hamilton Goes From Detroit Star to Forgotten Man
And hitting shots from everywhere, sweating like he'd just played an entire period.
"This is what I do now. This is where my energy goes. It helps me get rid of the frustration of not playing in the games,'' Hamilton told FanHouse after his solitary workout was finished. "It keeps me ready for whatever is going to happen, and it keeps me from going crazy.''
Hamilton, a key player for the Pistons for so many years, has been reduced to forgotten man at the end of the bench, knowing he was unlikely to play even before Monday night's game began against the Magic.
He may have averaged at least 17 points in each of his eight previous seasons with the Pistons, but he has lost his starting role -- and any role -- as the Pistons try to restructure their team.
From star to just standing around.

Steelers Vs. Packers: Bold Predictions and Shockers For Super Bowl XLV
Steelers Vs. Packers: Bold Predictions and Shockers For Super Bowl XLV
Super Bowl XLV is fast approaching and everything about this Steelers vs. Packers matchup points to it being one for the ages.
The Steelers are making their third Super Bowl trip in the past six years, and have come up victorious in each of their past two appearances. It could very well be said that Mike Tomlin's team was somewhat overlooked heading into this postseason with the likes of the New England Patriots, New York Jets and Atlanta Falcons stealing the headlines. But just like every other year, they have proved that they are an elite team with a hard-nose hitting defense and a balanced, yet explosive offensive attack.
On the other side is the Green Bay Packers, who entered this postseason as the No. 6 seeded team in the NFC and beat the likes of the Philadelphia Eagles, Atlanta Falcons and Chicago Bears to reach their first Super Bowl since 1998. They are playing at a high level right now and have been the hottest team throughout this postseason. Similar to the Steelers, Green Bay relies on a very active defense and an offense, that can certainly strike fast at any time and put points up in bunches.
So what's going to give in a matchup of two teams that are so evenly matched?
We will keep you posted on some bold predictions and updated news as these two teams prepare for Super Bowl XLV.

The Golden Sombrero?s Top 50 Prospects: #33 ? Kyle Drabek (Video)
RHP
DOB: 12-8-87
ETA: 2011
As the centerpiece of the deal that sent Roy Halladay to Philadelphia over a season ago, Kyle Drabek oozes potential. With one of the best breakers in the Minors, he has a chance at 3 plus pitches. His four-seamer can reach 95, and with the addition of a plus cutter, Drabek now has 3 solid fastball variations. With three Major League starts to his name, it would be surprising if Drabek is not in Toronto by the middle of the summer, especially given the unfortunate departure of ace Shaun Marcum. However, The Blue Jays do not figure to ever challenge for a playoff berth since they play in the AL East, so there is no reason to hurry Drabek?s development.
If he builds on his solid 2010 Double-A numbers (2.94 ERA; 162 IP, 132:68 K:BB), he should prove to the Jays that he is ready for the Bigs. While Drabek has little to prove in the Minors anymore, he has no Triple-A experience and likely needs more work on his ...
2011 NBA All-Star Debate: Blake Griffin by the Numbers
We all know what an awesome rookie campaign Mr. Blake Griffin is having. As the All-Star game approaches, discussions have heated up among commentators and fans on whether Blake Griffin should make the team.
Below is a list of Western Conference forward candidates I deem worthy of consideration.
- Kevin Durant
- Carmelo Anthony
- Tim Duncan
- Pau Gasol
- Zach Randolph
- Blake Griffin
- Kevin Love
- Michael Beasley
- Lamarcus Aldridge
- Dirk Nowitzki
- Luis Scola
- Lamar Odom
- Rudy Gay
---
First and foremost, Duncan, Odom and Beasley are not having as good of a season as the other players on the list. Timmy will make it simply because he is Tim freaking Duncan and Odom is only receiving votes because he is wearing a Lakers uniform. I strongly believe Duncan will be the starting center for the West. Durant and Carmelo are locks thanks to the fans voting them in as starters. Pau Gasol won't garner enough votes to be a starter but will make the team as a center or forward. That leaves at most three spots of the remaining seven players.
Dirk is the lone standout among this bunch as the clear cut No. 1 scorer on his team. Nowitzki's proven ability to help his team win games gives him the nod over the six young forwards. Scola and Aldridge are worthy of being mentioned but will not be considered any further due to inferior numbers.
Based purely on player statistics and merits, Griffin should be in. Now, if you count the extra media buzz he will generate as one of the most explosive and entertaining player in the league who delivers crowd-invigorating dunks. In addition, Griffin will represent L.A.'s other team for the hosts. Blake Griffin as a 2011 All-Star is a no-brainer!
Despite the negative point differentials for Griffin, his ewins statistics show he contributes the most to his team's victories compare to the other studs in the table.
Coaches of the NBA, please do the right thing and put Blake Griffin in the All-Star game. Putting TD at center is no slight to his legend and the forward spot should be reserved for a better current performer and future star. This is what the fans want. WE WANT BLAKE! WE WANT BLAKE!
Bill Simmons of ESPN
Evan Clinchy of NESN
Kobe Bryant of the LA Lakers
ALL WANT BLAKE!!

Jeff Gordon ?Has At It? with Jimmie Johnson, Sonoma Raceway and Jeff Burton
Jeff Gordon is one of the subjects to this discussion via his dustups with teammate Jimmie Johnson, the road course race at Sonoma and the fight with Jeff Burton.
All of these have created controversy surrounding Gordon as people are questioning whether this is due to frustration with the lack of success, or if Gordon is finally letting his personality show.
The fun all began in April at Texas Motor Speedway after some contact between the teammates. When they were racing side-by-side, Gordon made contact with Johnson while it could appear that Johnson crowded his teammate.

Peyton Hillis: 'Every Team' Made Fun of Him for Being White
Filed under: Browns
Peyton Hillis is sort of a rarity in NFL history -- a white tailback. While there have been a few prominent ones, including John Riggins and Larry Csonka, they're the exception rather than the rule.On The Dan Patrick Show, Hillis said he heard about it every Sunday.
"Every team did it," he said. "They'll say, 'You white boy, you ain't gonna run on us today. This is ridiculous. Why are you giving offensive linemen the ball?'
"All kinds of stuff like that you hear on the field, but I use that to my advantage. I kind of soaked it in, ate it up a little bit, because I enjoyed it."
Hillis said he's been referred to by nicknames such as "The Avalanche" and "White Rhino."

Jonathan Byrd 'Grateful' to Open PGA Tour Season With Win
Filed under: PGA
Jonathan Byrd will not get the credit he deserves for Sunday's PGA Tour season-opening Hyundai Tournament of Champions victory in Kapalua, Hawaii.Lost in a distant time zone on an NFL playoff weekend, Byrd's sudden-death victory over Robert Garrigus on the second playoff hole will be very much like a tree that falls in the forest when no one is around to hear.
All the same, a final-round 67 and 24-under-par goes into the record book as Byrd's fifth career win (second in four months) and sets a high standard for the next 11 months to chase.
"I can't sit here and not think about where I was toward the end of the season last year, fighting for my (PGA Tour) card," he said. "I'm just thankful. I'm overwhelmed. I'm grateful, all of the above."
Obviously, Byrd does some of his finest work in overtime. He earned his invitation to the previous year's winners-only field by becoming the first player in PGA Tour history to win a playoff with a hole-in-one in Las Vegas back in October. Sunday's win on the Plantation Course was nowhere near as dramatic -- Garrigus missed a 3-foot putt for par on the second playoff hole that would have extended the playoff -- but it was every bit as satisfying.

Forcier leaving Michigan
Not only did Tate make it very clear he would be playing elsewhere, he also had plenty of other interesting things to say. Not Will Hill interesting, but he still covered a variety of topics that gives you an idea of where he is at mentally.
It has been confirmed that Tate is tweeting from @QBForce, so be sure to give him a follow and check out his somewhat bizarre timeline from last night.
Here are just a handful of the highlights (or whatever you might call ‘em)…

Milton Bradley's Status With Mariners Unlikely to Change Despite Arrest
Filed under: Mariners, MLB Police Blotter
While the Seattle Mariners continue to gather information over the arrest Tuesday of outfielder Milton Bradley, it seems Bradley is in no immediate danger of having his $12 million contract for the 2011 season scuttled.Officers from the Los Angeles Police Department arrested Bradley Tuesday, booking him under California Penal Code 422 on a felony charge of making criminal threats.
Bradley, who is going to be fighting for at-bats as the Seattle left fielder and designated hitter, posted $50,000 bail and was released Tuesday night.
Multiple sources said Bradley, who has a history of confrontational issues and who was placed on the restricted list by the Mariners last year while he took anger management classes, does not have any special language in his contract that would allow the Mariners to void his contract.

Spurs to Call-Up NBA D-League's Larry Owens for 10-Day Contract
Filed under: Spurs, NBA D-League, Tulsa 66ers
The San Antonio Spurs needed to add a 13th player by Wednesday after releasing Ime Udoka prior to his contract becoming guaranteed on January 5.Saturday night, the Spurs went ahead and made the decision to call-up Larry Owens (photo, with ball) from the NBA D-League's Tulsa 66ers, a source told FanHouse, to once again come in line with the league's mandate of having at least 13 players on each team's roster. Draft Express first reported on Twitter that Owens was a call-up candidate of the Spurs.
"Larry Owens has been a staple for what the 66ers stand for the past two seasons," 66ers head coach Nate Tibbetts said. "He comes to work every day to improve and he is truly a professional. Everyone in Tulsa is excited and proud of him."
Owens, a 6-foot-7 forward out of Oral Roberts, has amassed averages of 14.8 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.4 steals in 73 career regular season games in the D-League. His best D-League performance may have come in his eight playoff games last season, however, as he averaged 18.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 1.4 steals and 1.2 blocks while making 13 of his 28 shots from three-point territory while leading the 66ers to the championship series.
Though Owens' statistics aren't the most gaudy, and his last two games where he scored just eight points on nine shots aren't going to impress most fans, the work Owens has put in over the past two and a half seasons certainly makes him deserving of a call-up -- especially in the Spurs system.
