Messi?s new record places him among football?s all-time greats

It is incredible to think that Lionel Messi is only 25-years-old. Having just broken the 40-year-record for the number of goals scored by an individual in a calendar year, it is easy to forget Messi?s age, particularly considering that he has broken so many records previously. In fact, it makes you wonder what more can Messi achieve? But before looking ahead, let?s just take a look at what the little Argentine has achieved so far. He has already won three Champions Leagues, five La Liga titles, two World Club championships and an Olympic gold medal just for good measure.Individually, Messi has been awarded the Ballon D?Or for the last three years and he has been the leading scorer in the Champions League for the past four seasons. This season, he became Barcelona?s all-time record goalscorer, again aged just 25. So, the fact that two goals against Real Betis recently saw him surpass Gerd Muller?s record of 85 goals in a calendar year should be placed in context as just one of ma...

Maurice Clarett: I took paycut from college to pros

Maurice Clarett only spent one year at Ohio State as a member of their football team, but he sure did make it count. The former Buckeye running back was said to be living a life of luxury during his brief stint at OSU. This according to Monte Burke in his book 4th & Goal: One Man's Quest to Recapture His Dream.Deadspin published an excerpt of the book in which further details Clarett's college life:"Away from class, anything you can think of I did in my 13 months at Ohio State." Drugs and women were two of the things. Cars were another?he owned three of them at a time, including a brand-new Cadillac and Lexus. "I was living the NFL life in college," he says. "I got paid more in college than I do now in the UFL."Wait, what?A dark cloud already hangs over the program because of a separate incident involving a tattoo scandal. Ohio State was placed on 3-years probation and received a bowl ban for the 2012 season in punishment for that situation. ...

Rory McIlroy, Nike sued by Oakley over contract

Oakley is suing golfer Rory McIlroy and apparel giant Nike for an alleged breach of contract. The suit, which was filed in a federal court in Santa Ana, Calif., on Dec. 10, names both McIlroy and Nike as defendants. Details of the filing are not available through the federal court?s online system, but ESPN?s Lester Munson says Oakley alleges that McIlroy violated his contract with their company by refusing to grant them the ?right of first refusal? when the golfer signed a new endorsement deal with Nike. McIlroy reportedly signed a new deal with Nike recently that has been rumored to be for over $200 million. Oakley says its contract to provide eyewear and apparel for the top golfer runs through the end of the year, and that their counteroffer to Nike was ignored. The right of first refusal means Oakley would have a chance to match any offer that included payments to McIlroy for eyewear and/or apparel. Its offer to match Nike?s contract with McIlroy would cost them 30% of Nike?s total deal, which

Devellano Talks New Rink For The Wings

from Bob Duff of the Windsor Star,

Detroit Red Wings senior vice-president Jim Devellano believes that a new home for the National Hockey League club isn?t merely necessary, it?s mandatory if the Wings want to continue to operate as one of the elite franchises in the league.

?For the hockey team, to sustain the Red Wings, to get them back to where they once were, the ability to attract free agents, a vibrant building in downtown Detroit would be a plus,? Devellano said, admitting that outdated Joe Louis Arena played a role in the Wings? inability to land Zach Parise and Ryan Suter, the top two unrestricted free agents available last summer.

The Michigan state legislature last week passed Bill HB5463, which would provide public funds to help develop a downtown Detroit complex that would include a new facility to replace Joe Louis Arena, the Red Wings? home rink since 1979.

?What a wonderful thing this would be for the City of Detroit,? Devellano said. ?When you think...

ESPN suspends Parker for 30 days

Rob Parker has survived. That's the first takeaway from ESPN's announcement this afternoon. The controversial debater/controversy-igniter has been given a 30 day suspension by the network. I had thought Parker's job was in serious jeopardy before seeing his apology being read on SportsCenter this morning. That was a major sign ESPN's investment in Parker wasn't coming to an end. However, perhaps the more interesting nugget from the ESPN statement is that there have been additional disciplinary measures taken against personnel at First Take and there will be "enhanced editorial oversight" for the widely criticized show: ?ESPN has decided to suspend Rob Parker for 30 days for his comments made on last Thursday?s episode of First Take. Our review of the preparation for the show and the re-air has established that mistakes both in judgment and communication were made. As a direct result, clearly inappropriate content was aired and then re-aired ...
