Australian Open 2011: Can Andy Roddick Finally Break Through?

Australian Open 2011: Can Andy Roddick Finally Break Through?

Andy Roddick advanced to the third round today after beating Igor Kunitsyn 7-6 (7), 6-2, 6-3. It was the ninth straight time Roddick has gotten to the third round.

"I think when you're confident, the court just makes sense; decisions come easier to you," Roddick said to the media. "A lot of it comes naturally. There's not a whole lot of thought process. You're not forcing a lot. The ball kind of, I guess, reacts the way you want it to. So I feel comfortable out there right now."

Roddick has had a lot of good runs at grand slams but he's never really been able to seal the deal late in tournaments. It's really been the story of Roddick's career and that's a shame. He's a talented player, but things never really came together for him and with players like Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, he just could never get by them.

I think Roddick will have a good run, but he won't have that championship moment.

Wondering ?What If? Hummel Hooped With Boilermakers

Last year, the Purdue Boilermakers were in prime position to secure a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament and appeared to be one of the favorites for the national title. Hopes of championship banner were dimmed on February 24th in Minnesota as star player Robbie Hummel drove the lane, attempted a jump stop, and fell to the floor in pain. Hummel was diagnosed with a torn ACL a day later. Purdue managed to make it to the Sweet 16 before falling to eventual national champion Duke. Purdue fans who had expected more were left wondering ?what if,? Hummel had been part of the March madness mix.
Fast forward to the Summer of 2010. Hummel is in the midst of rehab, positive stories surface about his recovery and title aspirations return to West Lafayette. The media runs with expectations that the Big Boilermaker three of Hummel, JaJuan Johnson and E?Twaun Moore can lead Purdue to their first Final Four since 1969. ESPN?s college basketball?s analyst ranks Pu...

The Tom Brady and Peyton Manning Quarterback Era Is Over

Tom Brady and Peyton Manning will never win another Super Bowl.

What's more the 2010 season represented the passing of an era, the Brady/Manning epoch in NFL history is over. Sure, both men will continue to be among the top 10 quarterbacks in the league for the next three years. And both men may well tantalize us with the hope that they have one last run left in the tank, but they don't. The two men whose rivalry defined a decade in the NFL are on the downward slopes of their careers, a combined 0-5 (Brady's 0-3 and Manning's 0-2) in their last five playoff appearances.
The Other Side

Manning was definitely human in Indianapolis' first-round playoff loss. So what else is new? He's been throwing crucial interceptions since the Colts were in Baltimore. Then those crazed Jets went to New England and got Brady's balding scalp. Suddenly, conventional knee-jerkdom is declaring a changing of the quarterback guard.
-- David Whitley on why Tom Brady and Peyton Manning aren't done yet

Father time is stalking both, by the time the season kicks off next season Brady will be 34, Manning will be 35. Mark Sanchez, the New York Jets quarterback who eliminated both Manning and Brady is just 24-years-old. That puts Sanchez in the same company as the three quarterbacks left in the playoffs, Jay Cutler and Aaron Rodgers are both 27 and two-time Super Bowl-winning Ben Roethlisberger is 28.

The 2010 season, therefore, represents a passing of the football torch, a demarcation point between what was and what will be. This year Peyton Manning lost his fastball and Tom Brady continued to lose his hair. Both men also lost the first playoff game their teams played in. Along the way both men gave up the Super Bowl ghost, losing their last, best chances to win another Super Bowl. It's all downhill from here.

Tigers Top Wildcats On National Stage

In front of the national spotlight, the Tigers put forth a full team effort in a convincing 75-59 victory over Kansas State. ESPN was at Mizzou Arena as part of their college basketball Big Monday.
In the first half the Tigers and Wildcats traded baskets early on until the Tigers gained some separation. Coach Mike Anderson did a great job rotating ten players to wear down the Wildcats as the half progressed. A strong half by reserve guard Phil Pressey and numerous Wildcats turnovers cleared the way for the Tigers to take a 43-28 lead going into the locker room. Pressey, a freshman, finished with 13 points and has really stepped up his play as in the last two games.
In the second half the Tigers started off flat, and the Wildcats started to cut into their lead. Wildcats Jacob Pullen led the charge by finishing with a game high 16 points. The Wildcats only got as close as three points with eight minutes to play, and then the Tigers took over. A 12-0 run guided by the sharp shooting of...

Rex Ryan Spins Pregame Bluster Into Stellar Jets Performance

Rex RyanFOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- The web of deception that Rex Ryan began spinning well before the Jets reintroduced themselves to the Patriots here on Sunday night was thick with several peaks.

Ryan all week had induced banter about whether he would outcoach Bill Belichick. About how this was personal. He toiled defending cornerback Antonio Cromartie, while continuing to nip at quarterback Tom Brady. Ryan kept the circus energized. The fluff puffed.

Behind the scenes, Ryan was tinkering with and retooling his defense. He was hoping by kickoff Sunday that the Patriots would continue to see red when they saw Jets green and invoke awkward execution. Ryan was massaging his team, stoking fires inside, pruning his Jets for this big moment, this big stage.

They rolled into Gillette Stadium and spun the Patriots completely around, then upside down, 28-21.

This victory for the Jets, which vaults them into their second straight AFC championship game, was a testament to Ryan's bodacious style and sly coaching.
