Angelique Kerber did the seemingly impossible yesterday at the Western and Southern Open, beating Serena Williams on a surface other than a clay. The younger Williams had not lost since her first-round exit at the French Open to Virignie Razzano. Kerber did not seem to care how well Serena had been playing, as she took it to Williams and never took her foot off the gas. This upset, among others, makes the women's semifinals at the Western and Southern Open very intriguing.

Venus Williams fought past Samantha Stosur in the quarterfinals on Friday to reach her first single's semifinal of 2012. Her next task: to beat Na Li, should be considerably more difficult. Li, after losing early at both Wimbledon and the Olympics, travelled to Canada looking for some kind of momentum heading into the US Open. She found some, reaching the Final, only to lose to Petra Kvitova in a tough three-set match. ...
