Joe Gibbs Racing has finally pulled the plug on Mike Ford, crew chief for Denny Hamlin's #11 Sprint Cup team. Rumors about a crew chief change at JGR had been circulating since late spring, but once word leaked out JGR stood firm with their current lineup. Until now.
Ford spoke to the AP last night and acknowledged the change was a lingering issue. Ford said, “It had been dragging on for so long, I’m actually relieved there’s finally a resolution.”
Hamlin struggled early in the 2011 season after nearly winning the Sprint Cup Championship in 2010. But, it might have been the finish of the 2010 season that finally did in the Ford and Hamlin show. They crumbled at the feet of Jimmie Johnson and Chad Knaus at the end of the championship run, and dissension grew between Ford and Hamlin.
