Sam Querrey Enters Farmers Classic

Two-time defending champion Sam Querrey , will return to play the Farmers Classic, presented by Mercedes-Benz, July 25-31 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center on the campus of UCLA.
Querrey joins 2008 champion Juan Martin del Potro in the field for the 2011 event.
?To have the champions from our last three years is great for tennis and the Farmers Classic,? said Tournament Director Bob Kramer. ?With Sam?s local ties and vocal fanbase here, he always brings a lot of energy to the tournament. Sam and Juan Martin are great champions, and we are eager for them both to return to UCLA.?

Last year, Querrey defeated Andy Murray for the title in a battle of the tournament?s top two seeds. Querrey, who grew up in Thousand Oaks and still has a home in Santa Monica, is looking to join very elite company in 2011. He is one of just six players to have ever defended their title in the 84-year history of the tournament, and is looking to join Hall of Famers Fred...

NBA Free Agents 2011: 5 Bold Predictions for Philadelphia 76ers in Free Agency

Even after a very successful 2010-2011 NBA season, the Philadelphia 76ers head into the offseason with plenty of questions surrounding the team.

The Sixers surprised most people by jumping into the playoffs and grabbing the No. 7 seed after having the No. 2 overall pick last summer. However, how far can this current team go in the all of a sudden stacked Eastern Conference?

The answer is not very far. Philly has to make changes in order to contend in the East. Changes might be harder to come by than most people think because the Sixers are so cap-strung.

The Sixers, if they resign Thaddeus Young will most likely have about $54 million already committed to their 2011-2012 roster, and that does not even include their draft picks. Keep in mind that the salary cap for last season was just over $58 million.

If the Sixers want to improve their team, a trade might be the only way to do so. Here are five bold predictions for the Sixers in the 2011 Free Agency period.

Kevin Ware Finds New Home, Commits to Louisville

Kevin Ware/ajc.comBy Paul Seaver (TheArenaPulse) The highly-anticipated and long-awaited decision of 2011 guard Kevin Ware has finally come to a close. The decision became public on Monday evening: Ware is going to Louisville.Ware becomes the fifth prospect to commit to the Cardinals and head coach Rick Pitino for next season. A late and unofficial visit to the campus this past weekend was enough for Ware to give the university his verbal decision. While the 6-foot-5 guard out of Rockdale County (GA) has undoubtedly had an odd recruitment, it would seem likely that this is Ware's final decision.A former Tennessee commit, Ware was granted a scholarship release from the university following the dismal of head coach Bruce Pearl. Ware and guard Chris Jones were among the pair of Top-100 prospects lost by the Volunteers following the change at head coach.Ware reopened his recruitment before offering a verbal commitment to Central Florida. However, that didn't last long. In late Apr...

FC Barcelona Aren't Cheaters, Not to Say There Aren't Problems in World Football

Those of you that follow world football have, most likely, heard vicious claims and accusations of cheating being directed towards FC Barcelona, primarily because of the horrible show they put on against Real Madrid CF in this year’s Champions League semifinal.

Is it really appropriate to be making these ignorant accusations though?

A shallow look into the games they play may indicate that, yes, they are manipulating referees in order to gain possession, penalties and a general upper hand through what appears to be an audition for El Cor de la Ciutat—which must be cheating, because of their success at doing so.

Let’s not forget that teams don’t call penalties for themselves though.  Someone else makes these calls.

Football clubs, even the best in the world, are going to continue to look for the dive in order to gain some sort of advantage over their opponents as long as the refs continue to award said advantage to them.  I don’t blame them.  What's to stop them from doing so?

The way referees handle matches must be changed.  Yes, it can be done.  If you were able to catch the Champions League final this year, you would know that Viktor Kassai handled both himself and the match very nicely.

Let’s hope some of that will rub off on other officials.

I'm not letting Barça off the hook just yet though.  It would be nice if they actually lived up to their claims of being més que un club, rather than just throwing blind words out there.

To put it bluntly, their actions have been unethical and hypocritical in the 2010-11 season.  There is no doubt that they are the best club in the world right now—as far as skill and teamwork goes—but the way they accomplished that feat this season, as a whole, was enough to make my nostrils flare and eyes water.

When you intentionally exaggerate physical contact with an opposing player to enhance or create a foul, you are making a false claim to the referee and therefore participating in unethical and unsportsmanlike conduct.

When you do this while playing for a team that claims to be more than a club, you become a hypocrite.

I hope the stench that these players so rudely left me with is enough to wake themselves up as well and serve as a reminder of the motto they should be playing by.

Messi Inspires Barcelona To Beat Man United In Uefa Champs Lge Final

Lionel Messi celebrates his goal against Manchester United
Barcelona, inspired by the peerless Lionel Messi, delivered a soccer masterclass to overwhelm Manchester United 3-1 in the Champions League final and lift the European Cup for the fourth time on Saturday.
Messi was at his inspirational best all night at Wembley as the champions of Spain left the champions of England looking like desperate also-rans in the face of their relentless intricate passing and deadly movement.
United somehow reached halftime level at 1-1 after Wayne Rooney cancelled out Pedro?s opening goal but Barcelona continued their dominance after the break.
A superb Messi goal and a precise 18-metre curler by David Villa, underlined the Spanish side?s dominance over the team they also beat in the 2009 final.
After a short-lived United flurry at the start, Barca were soon in control as they probed constantly in and around the United box.
Although the English side kept them at bay with a series of last-ditch ...

Takuma Sato out of Indy 500 after scraping wall

Takuma Sato is out of the Indianapolis 500 after his No. 5 Honda scraped the wall 24 laps into the race.

The 34-year-old Japanese driver was running in the middle of the 33-car field when his No. 5 KV Racing Technology-Lotus went high and brushed the wall. He was not injured, but his car sustained significant damage to the right side.

Driver Will Power, who qualified fifth, ended up doing a lap with just three wheels after he exited a pit stop too soon, sending his left rear tire rolling down pit road as he pulled away.

Pole-sitter Alex Tagliani and Scott Dixon, who qualified second, dominated the early portion of the 200-lap race.

Kirk Morrison Could Be the Answer (Again) at Linebacker for Jacksonville Jaguars

Kirk Morrison is in Oakland, waiting for his opportunity.

As he trains in the offseason during the NFL lockout, the Jaguars linebacker can’t wait to get back on the field. The question, however, is whether Morrison will be in Jaguar teal this coming season (if there is a season) or will another city become his new home.

In a May 4 article in the Florida Times-Union, Morrison said he relishes the chance to get be into the swing of practice and preparation for the 2011 season. Before the lockout, the Jaguars did not attempt to re-sign the veteran they gave up a fifth-round draft choice last season to get from the Raiders. And although the team did not try to bring Morrison back into the fold, this is not a sign that a chance at playing in Jacksonville again this coming season is out of the picture.

"I definitely want to come back and be a part of this team, and there's a lot more football left in me," Morrison said. "I wouldn't call it a down year, but it's definitely an adjustment period for me. Philosophy changed, the aggressiveness changed, a lot of things changed. I was playing in the same system for five years. This year in Jacksonville was tough for me."

Right now, the only guarantee the Jaguars have in the second line of their defense is that star player, Daryl Smith will return. Morrison and Justin Durant remain major question marks. When the Jaguars traded for the six-year veteran, they had hoped he would be the answer to one of the missing pieces to a defense that had declined in recent years. Morrison had his moments, but not enough to have the Jaguars jump at re-signing him.

Durant has been plagued by injuries as of late, however, when he has been on the field and healthy, he has been a very good player for the team.

The Jaguars figure to be an active team in the free agency period (when it is allowed by the NFL), looking at help on the line, in the secondary and at linebacker.

Morrison said he would welcome a chance to come back to the east coast and play football.

"You come from Oakland, play a man scheme and never play cover-2 at all," Morrison said. "And you get to Jacksonville and there are a lot of multiple coverages, never man. You kind of revert back to what you did. Reaction time is not where you want it to be."

It is believed the team, under defensive coordinator Mel Tucker, will look at other linebackers such as Paul Pozluszny or maybe reaching out to Ben Leber.

"A lot of players say, 'Oh, after workouts, I'm at home doing nothing," Morrison said. "I'm just a guy that's always trying to be proactive, always trying to be active doing something. I can work out two or three, four hours a day, but when I'm done, what can I do to better myself?"

For now, Morrison will continue to train in Oakland, workout and wait. He will continue to host his radio talk show and do what most other veterans are doing, playing the waiting game. And hope the Jaguars will invite him to come back and prove he can continue to play his position at a higher level.

New York Jets Coach Rex Ryan Talks with Joe Gibbs & Tom Moore

Get better every day. That?s the name of the game. New York Jets coach Rex Ryan hasn?t been able to contact his players during the lockout, but that hasn?t stopped him from getting better this offseason.
Instead of talking to his players, Ryan picked the brains of ex-Washington Redskins Hall of Fame coach Joe Gibbs and former Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Tom Moore, according to the Jets official website.
?I called Joe Gibbs,? Ryan said. ?When they went through some work stoppages, the last two times the Washington Redskins won two Super Bowls. So I figured that would be a good guy to call.?
In 1982, there was a work stoppage due to a player strike that started in the middle of September and lasted into November of that season. In a nine-game regular season, Gibbs coached the Redskins to an 8-1 record and a Super Bowl championship.
Then five years later in 1987, a 24-day player strike caused the loss of a game and replacement players...

Tate Forcier reportedly hospitalized after incident with police in April.

Grand Rapids, Mich. station WOOD is reporting on an incident in April involving former Michigan quarterback Tate Forcier. The station reports Forcier was found hanging out of a window of his girlfriend's apartment building by Grand Rapid police officers.

"Tate Forcier, who quit the football team earlier this year, had locked himself in a bedroom of a third-floor apartment April 22, and was hanging out the window, the report states.

A woman in the apartment complex, in the 100 block of South Division Avenue, called Grand Rapids police.

No one will say whether this was a suicide attempt, but the police report states the woman who called was concerned Forcier would jump from the window.

Officers were able to get Forcier to open the bedroom door. He was not arrested, but transported to a hospital."
There's been no further word about the situation, or how long Forcier was allegedly hospitalized.

Forcier's been admittedly a target around here,...

Jack Edwards Can't Pick Winner in 'Epic' Bruins-Lightning Series, Agrees With NHL's Decision on Nathan Horton

It's probably safe to assume which team NESN's Jack Edwards will be rooting for on Friday night in Game 7 between the Bruins and Lightning, but he's not ready to commit to a winner. Edwards was a guest on Puck Daddy Radio on Friday, and he talked about the winner-take-all showdown, saying that game-winning goal will come on an "effort goal." In Defense of Carlos Beltran

Fred Wilpon dissed himself over the Carlos Beltran deal. But, was he right?

By serving as the subject of a long-form article in The New Yorker on Monday, New York Mets owner Fred Wilpon sought to rehabilitate his and his team?s image. Hidden in the compelling story of his career, however, Wilpon slipped in just a few too many thoughts about his premier players. Clearly, such words will not improve the team?s public image, inspire the club, or increase the team?s value when it is at least partially sold. Despite this clear slip-up, fans may be intrigued by this rare opportunity to hear ownership?s view of particular players. Regarding Jose Reyes, David Wright, and Ike Davis, Wilpon?s comments were more harsh than insightful but ultimately appear to be on point. However, Carlos Beltran somewhat shockingly drew the harshest criticism of all. Wilpon?s disparaging remarks represent a gross failure to understand Beltran?s value.
In total, Wilpon?s comments amount to an admis...

WWE: Will We Ever See Brock Lesnar in a WWE Ring Again?

WWE Brought Brock Lesnar Into the Mainstream, But Will He Ever Return to the Company?

In past months, there were whispers about Brock Lesnar and if he'd ever step foot in a WWE ring again.

Lesnar had an infamous falling out with the company and a miserable performance in a WrestleMania match against Goldberg. There was the confrontation with the Undertaker after one of Lesnar's fights and that really had speculation going.

Right now, Lesnar is trying to get healthy and get back the championship he lost to Cain Velasquez, but he didn't rule out the possibility of one more match in the WWE.

Per PWTorch.com:

"I want to get back in the octagon. If the day ever came if there was an opportunity for me to make a one-time appearance for wrestling - ya know, timing is everything. If everything was right, maybe so. But, for right now, c'mon, I'm an ultimate fighter and this is where I want to be."

Inevitably, I think we'll see this happen.

Lesnar knows good business and so does Vince McMahon, so if the UFC well every dries up, it will be pretty easy for the WWE to pick up the phone and see what Lesnar is doing and how he would feel about doing an angle with the company.

MUST READ: Tough Enough? They Were:  The Top 10 Successes of WWE's Reality Show

Sure, it's been a while since he's had to do it, but there would be so much buzz around Lesnar, as there has been with everything he has done with the UFC and both he and McMahon know how to draw attention to these types of things.

Furthermore, the fans would love to see him back in the WWE and he would get a monster pop if his music hit and he stormed the ring. If the company is willing to go back to stars like The Rock, there is no reason they won't go back to Lesnar if the opportunity arrises.

Despite his size, Lesnar was a good worker, even if he was a bit stiff at times and it would really be something if

Starved for attention: Mark Titus

Where do I begin with this man. Let me first off say that of course I am a huge Buckeye fan. That should be obvious seeing as this article is being written on a blog about Ohio sports. I have never been on the Mark Titus bandwagon, nor will I ever be. He has always come off as a guy who was capitalizing off of other people. Most noteworthy Greg Oden, Mike Conley and Evan Turner. So, before I go bashing Titus, let me first get out what I do like about him.
He has a blog, as do I. I don?t fault anyone for that. He has made the most of his annoying presence with Club Trillion, selling t-shirts, being interviewed on ESPN, etc. I can?t fault him for taking advantage of that. That?s it. Two things. Now let?s move on.
The concept of his blog was clever. It was supposed to be the perspective of a walk-on basketball player and their life at the end of the bench. It wasn?t that at all. It was him using his well known teammates to make himself famous. Some say he only got on the team because...

Nigeria backs Sepp Blatter for re-election

The Nigeria Football Federation says it will back Sepp Blatter for re-election as FIFA President in next week's vote because of his vow to fight corruption.

The NFF said Wednesday that it had decided to support 13-year incumbent Blatter for his pledge ''to make the administration of the game more open and fight corruption.''

Nigeria's backing came shortly before Blatter's challenger, Mohamed bin Hammam of Qatar, was placed under investigation by FIFA's ethics committee after being accused of bribery in his campaign.

The 75-year-old Blatter has also received support from the Confederation of African Football and four of Africa's five regional federations, suggesting fading support for bin Hammam in a continent where he was believed to have a strong following.

Ferguson confirms interest in goalkeeper De Gea

Van der Sar is retiring after the Champions League final on Saturday against Barcelona.

After Today?s Column, Fred Wilpon Would Like To Show Bob Klapisch The Bronx

In the wake of Monday?s explosive interview with the New Yorker?s Jeffrey Toobin, ostensibly designed to generate public empathy for Mets owner Fred Wilpon (the budget for Jay Horowitz? retirement part was just slashed in half), the franchise has found itself the subject of the sort of mockery not seen since, well, the last time Tony Bernazard tore his shirt off in a crowded room. While it is entirely possible Wilpon?s offensive remarks regarding Jose Reyes, David Wright and Carlos Beltran (otherwise known as Greedy, Mr. Nice Guy and Totally Washed Up) were just Brooklyn Fred shooting the **** in-between bites of a Shack Shake burger, the Bergen Record?s Bob Klapisch suggests it might also have been a calculated way to announce a fire sale (?Wilpon?s observations were akin to a clanging of the Chuck Wagon Triangle bell?), though hardly the most advisable means of doing so.

Ian Poulter Golfs Like Me

Dugout screen name-ready golfer Ian Poulter became my new favorite golfer by interpreting the fall of man and the futility of human effort with a swing and an epic collapse into the bunker at the Volvo World Championship. This is what I might look like trying to win the Volvo World Championship first thing in the morning, when I can?t pour a glass of water without spilling half of it on the floor. He?s sort of the living version of that animated gif where two bulldogs are having sex, and the one in back just vomits all over the one he?s railing. An encapsulation of life.
Poulter?s fall also helps explain humor to the layman. A man trying to be funny isn?t funny. Funny is a man trying to be serious, but failing. Poulter shows up to events with swirly hair color and USA-print Zubaz pants (right, in case you missed them) and it isn?t funny. It?s Brian Wilson funny. Woods out of top 10 for first time in 14 years

Tiger Woods has fallen to 12th in the world rankings, dropping out of the top 10 for the first time in 14 years.

Woods, who is currently out of action due to left knee and Achilles injuries, has not won a tournament since the Australian Masters 18 months ago. He dropped four places in the new rankings published Monday.

Lee Westwood of England remains at No. 1, with Charl Schwartzel of South Africa taking Woods' place in the top 10.

Second-ranked Luke Donald missed the chance to overtake compatriot Westwood and become No. 1 after losing in the final of the World Match Play Championship to Ian Poulter on Sunday.

The last time Woods was ranked outside the top 10 was April 1997, before he won the Masters for the first of his 14 majors.

Canucks in command; East up for grabs

After four games, the Eastern Conference finals between the Boston Bruins and Tampa Bay Lightning remain a seesaw affair, with neither club seemingly capable of gaining an edge.

In Game 3, the Bruins struck for an early first-period goal, then rode their defense and the strong goaltending of Tim Thomas to a 2-0 victory to take a 2-1 series lead.

Sloppy defensive play by the Lightning and shaky goaltending from Dwayne Roloson resulted in a 3-0 first-period lead for the Bruins in Game 4, as the series momentum appeared to have shifted firmly in their favor.

The Lightning returned for the second period having replaced Roloson with backup Mike Smith. Given the score at that point, it appeared the Bruins had an insurmountable lead.

And then, inexplicably, the bottom fell out for the Bruins.

Thomas, who had been a pillar of strength in his shutout victory in Game 3, was rattled by the traffic around his net as the Lightning pushed to get on the scoreboard. A careless turnover by Thomas behind his own net resulted in a goal by Tampa Bay forward Teddy Purcell, and the floodgates opened. Purcell struck again roughly a minute later, followed by unlikely playoff goal-scoring leader Sean Bergenheim potting the tying goal just shy of three minutes after that.

The Bruins appeared in shock. Despite attempts to put more offensive pressure on the Lightning, Smith kicked aside all 21 shots fired his way.

Almost seven minutes into the third period, Simon Gagne completed the comeback by giving the Lightning their first lead of the game. Martin St. Louis added an insurance marker into an empty Bruins net late in the period to ice the win for the Lightning and tie the best-of-seven series at 2-2 heading back to Boston.

As this series moves forward, the goaltending of both clubs bears watching.

Thomas overcame a shaky start to this year's playoffs to anchor the Bruins in series victories over Montreal and Philadelphia, and his shutout performance in Game 3 appeared to confirm he had overcome his struggles earlier in this series.

But the Lightning's crease crashing appeared to rattle Thomas in Game 4. Unless the Bruins' defense can do a better job of protecting Thomas' crease and clearing traffic in front of him, the Lightning will keep trying to rattle his confidence.

Lightning coach Guy Boucher, meanwhile, could soon be facing a decision between Roloson or Smith in this series.

Roloson is arguably the main reason the Lightning made their surprising march to the conference finals, upsetting the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals along the way. But, like Thomas, this series hasn't been particularly memorable for Roloson, having been pulled twice in favor of Smith, whose style of play and puck handling has thus far proved unbeatable in this series.

Boucher appears willing to return with Roloson in Game 5, but if "Rollie the Goalie" gets the hook again in this series, Smith could end up taking over full time.

In the Western Conference finals, meanwhile, the Vancouver Canucks have taken a commanding 3-1 series lead over the San Jose Sharks. They have the opportunity to close out the series back in Vancouver on Tuesday and advance to the Stanley Cup Finals for the third time in franchise history.

The Canucks' special teams were the deciding factors in Games 3 and 4.

In Game 3, their penalty-killing struggled, giving up two first-period power-play goals to the Sharks. In the second period, already down 3-0, the Canucks had two back-to-back five-on-three situations but failed to capitalize on the opportunities. Had they been able to do so, it might have changed the outcome of the game, which the Sharks ultimately won 4-3.

It was a different story in Game 4, as the Canucks killed off five consecutive penalties, including three in the first period, then struck for three goals on three consecutive man-advantage situations in the second period. They opened a 3-0 lead on their way to a 4-2 win and control of the series.

There was some concern about how the Canucks' defense would perform after it lost Christian Ehrhoff and Aaron Rome to injuries in Game 3, but Keith Ballard and call-up Chris Tanev answered the call and played well as the third pairing. Ballard laid out the best hit of the series, sending Sharks winger Jamie McGinn pinwheeling head over heels with a first-period hip check.

Vancouver's best forwards were silent in Game 3 but made their presence felt in Game 4. Henrik Sedin set up all four Canucks goals. His brother Daniel assisted on three of them. Ryan Kesler scored the first of Vancouver's three power-play markers.

Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo, criticized for giving up three first-period goals in Game 3, silenced his critics by rebounding with a solid effort in Game 4, turning aside 33 shots. Sharks netminder Antti Niemi, meanwhile, faced only 13 shots in that game but gave up four goals.

Compounding the Sharks' struggles in Game 4 was what appeared to be a shoulder injury suffered midway through the third period by team captain Joe Thornton. He was hurt on a check by Canucks forward Raffi Torres, making Thornton questionable to suit up for Game 5 on Tuesday.

Another problem for the Sharks have been the play of sniper Dany Heatley, who has only one goal in his past 11 games and none in this series. If the Sharks hope to stave off elimination, they will need Heatley to start cashing in.

Jose Reyes: 5 Reasons He's Perfect for the Giants, but It Won't Happen

Jose Reyes is certainly the talk of trade with the New York Mets' recent financial situation, and the San Francisco Giants sure could use another shortstop.

However, the Mets will certainly not let their superstar go without getting something very valuable in return, and you can bet that it's tempting for Giants GM Brian Sabean.

There are at least five reasons why Jose Reyes is the perfect piece to the San Francisco Giants puzzle, but they still won't trade for him.

Luke Hancock To Louisville

I realize I?m a little late on this, but George Mason sophomore Luke Hancock has decided to transfer, and tells ESPN he will enroll at Louisville.
Excerpt from ESPN.com
FAIRFAX, Va. ? Sophomore forward Luke Hancock is transferring from George Mason, and the school says he plans to enroll at Louisville.
Hancock averaged 10.9 points last season. He scored 18 and hit a key 3-pointer late in George Mason?s victory over Villanova in its NCAA tournament opener.
New George Mason coach Paul Hewitt, hired when Jim Larranaga left for Miami, said Saturday the Patriots ?are sad to have him leave? but ?respect Luke?s decision.?
I will have a lot more on the info on Hancock in the morning. It sounds like Kevin Keatts had a lot to do with this.

Arizona?s Amazing New Bullpen And Dan Haren

The Arizona Diamondbacks entered 2010 as one of the most intriguing teams in the majors. Showcasing a rotation led by Dan Haren and Edwin Jackson (and with Brandon Webb potentially waiting in the wings) and a fantastically talented young offense including Justin Upton, Chris Young, and Mark Reynolds, there was reason to believe the Diamondbacks could compete with the beasts of the West. Instead, the bullpen failed them, as such names as Juan Gutierrez, Chad Qualls, and Esmerling Vasquez combined to post a 5.47 ERA along with a historically bad -10 WPA (Win Probability Added) and sink any dreams Arizona had of respectability, much less competition.

Diamondbacks ownership, then, when faced with the prospect of paying Haren eight figures yearly to play for a team that was struggling to break 65 wins, decided to ship their ace out. It?s hard to figure out what exactly the thought process was behind this deal. It?s possible that ownership was pressing interim GM Jerry ...

Brock Lesnar and the UFC Heavyweight Picture as It Stands

With Brock Lesnar (5-2) having pulled out of his planned June 11 bout with Junior dos Santos (12-1), some interesting divisional shifts await us. We’ve obviously learned that a replacement is already on tap in the form of Shane Carwin: Good enough, for the time being.

However, with one of the division’s elite out of the picture indefinitely, what becomes of the overall heavyweight landscape?

Diverticulitis is no joke, and it’s already nearly ended the former champion’s career once. Can Lesnar overcome such an obstacle yet again? Only time will tell.

However, with Lesnar on the sidelines, it’s time to reevaluate things; what better way than to highlight the five most dangerous big men under UFC contract (behind champion Cain Velasquez, of course).

All eyes on Djokovic, Nadal at 2011 French Open

Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal both have reason to like their chances at the French Open.

Djokovic is unbeaten so far in 2011, a 37-0 record that includes seven titles from seven tournaments and victories over Nadal in finals the past two weeks on clay - the surface used at Roland Garros.

Nadal, for his part, can derive confidence from his success at past French Opens: He is 38-1 with five titles over his career at the year's second Grand Slam tournament.

When play begins in Paris on Sunday, the focus squarely will be on those two men - No. 1-ranked Nadal of Spain and No. 2-ranked Djokovic of Serbia - and whether they will meet in the June 5 final.

Roger Federer's only-by-his-high-standards slump is among the other stories of interest. A wide-open women's draw is missing both Williams sisters but features Kim Clijsters' first French Open appearance since 2006, Maria Sharapova's bid to win the only Grand Slam title missing from her resume, and top-ranked Caroline Wozniacki's pursuit of her first major championship.

The main questions, though, concern Djokovic and Nadal.

Can Djokovic win his second consecutive Grand Slam title and break John McEnroe's Open era record for best start to a season, 42-0 in 1984?

''He is playing fantastic,'' Nadal acknowledged.

Can Nadal equal Swedish great Bjorn Borg's record of six French Open championships?

''Let us be clear: He is the 'King of Clay,' and he is the best player ever to play on this surface,'' Djokovic said about Nadal.

Hard to argue with that.

Since the start of the 2005 season, Nadal is 193-8 on clay, including an 81-match victory run during one stretch. At Roland Garros, he's won 113 of 123 sets in his six previous appearances, and his only loss came to two-time French Open runner-up Robin Soderling of Sweden in the fourth round in 2009.

As none other than 16-time Grand Slam champion Federer put it at the start of the European clay-court season: ''Look, we all know how good Rafa is on this surface.''

Indeed, Djokovic is the only player to beat Nadal twice in one season on the slow, red stuff, accomplishing that with straight-set victories in the championship matches in Madrid and Rome this month.

Entering this season, Djokovic was a combined 13-29 against Nadal and Federer, the two players who have finished ahead of him in the rankings the past four years. But he's 7-0 against them in 2011, losing a total of only three sets in those matches.

Djokovic's 4-0 record against Nadal was compiled entirely in tournament finals, and they only could meet at that stage at the French Open, too. If they do, it would be a rematch of September's U.S. Open final, which Nadal won for his ninth Grand Slam title and third in a row.

Djokovic stopped that streak by winning the Australian Open in January for his second major trophy. Now, thanks to his remarkable start to this season, Djokovic could replace Nadal atop the ATP rankings for the first time. To remain at No. 1, Nadal must win the French Open and have Djokovic lose before the final, according to the ATP World Tour. Another way to look at it: If Nadal fails to take home the title, Djokovic will become No. 1 - no matter what he does in Paris.

For so long, it was 2009 French Open champion Federer who owned that top ranking and who was the center of attention at Grand Slam tournaments.

But as he approaches his 30th birthday in August, Federer is no longer the dominant figure that he was. After reaching 23 consecutive major semifinals, he was upset by Soderling in the French Open quarterfinals last year, then lost to Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic in the Wimbledon quarterfinals.

Those were followed by losses to Djokovic in the semifinals at both the U.S. Open and Australian Open, which means Federer enters this French Open in his longest Grand Slam drought since winning his first major title at Wimbledon in 2003.

''Roger is still playing great. A couple of guys have stepped up, and Novak and Nadal right now are hitting their prime,'' said Pete Sampras, whose record of 14 career Grand Slam titles was broken by Federer in 2009. ''Roger - he'll find his way.''

Federer has won at least one Grand Slam title in each of the past eight seasons, tying a record shared by Sampras and Borg. All streaks eventually end.

Djokovic is hoping his will last at least another seven matches, which would be enough to give him his first French Open championship, his third Grand Slam title overall, the No. 1 ranking, and a 44-0 record in 2011, two better than McEnroe managed 27 years ago.

''This is really, potentially, a monumental effort. If he were to win the French, he could almost lock up the (year-end) No. 1 player in the world,'' McEnroe said. ''This has been rather amazing.''

Kenseth in good company with 20th win

When Matt Kenseth won the FedEx 400 at Dover International Speedway last week, it was a milestone victory.

It was his 20th career Sprint Cup victory.

That doesn't seem like a lot. And in the grand scheme of things, it isn't. Not compared to, say, Jeff Gordon's 83 career wins or Jimmie Johnson's 54.

But 20 wins in NASCAR's top division now seem like a significant achievement. The days of 80, 50 and even 40 career wins seem like they could be a thing of the past.

Gordon, of course, is in rare company. He is one of just six drivers in NASCAR history with 80 or more career victories.

Johnson, the five-time defending champion, is one of just 11 drivers with 50 wins. He hit that mark last season, becoming the first driver since Rusty Wallace in 2000 to reach 50.

Only 16 drivers have 40. Mark Martin is on the list, soon to be joined by Tony Stewart, who has 39. At age 40, Stewart has a shot at 50 wins.

Among active Sprint Cup drivers, no one else has more than 22 career victories.

Why?

Because drivers like Gordon, Johnson and Stewart don't come around every year.

But also because NASCAR is so competitive now that it is very difficult for drivers to hit the type of hot streaks that it takes to accumulate huge victory totals.

Gordon racked up huge numbers by dominating the mid-1990s. His three-year run of 33 wins from 1996-98 is one of the best streaks in the modern era and jump-started a career that has now topped 80 victories.

Only one driver since Gordon in 1998 has won 10 races in a season - Johnson.

Johnson won eight races in 2004 and seven in 2008 and '09, but the norm for an outstanding season today is five or six wins - not 10 or 12.

In the past four decades, it was not unusual for drivers to string together seasons of 10 or more wins. Richard Petty (200 wins), David Pearson (104), Bobby Allison (84) and Cale Yarborough (83) all did it in the 1960s and '70s, each taking turns dominating different stretches. (Pearson and Allison will be inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame Monday, joining Petty and Dale Earnhardt.)

Darrell Waltrip (84) and Earnhardt (76) did it in the '80s and '90s, as did Gordon in the mid-'90s.

Johnson did it in the last decade, winning 53 races from 2002-10.

But 10-win seasons and 50-win decades are becoming increasingly rare as NASCAR speeds through the most competitive era in its history.

Johnson and Denny Hamlin led the Sprint Cup Series last year with six and eight wins, respectively. Eleven other drivers won races, with eight winning two or three.

With that kind of parity, it is very difficult for drivers today to rack up big career victory totals.

NASCAR is also at the end of an era when a large group of stars all burst onto the scene at the same time 10 or 11 years ago. Those drivers are now either in their prime or inching toward the downside of their careers.

Kenseth is in that group, along with Greg Biffle, Kurt Busch, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Kevin Harvick, Ryan Newman and Johnson. They were followed by another wave that includes Carl Edwards, Kasey Kahne, Kyle Busch and Hamlin.

With so many top-flight drivers at the peak of their careers at the same time, the odds of one of them dominating a season with eight to 10 victories are indeed long.

Edwards, Hamlin and Kyle Busch each have had eight- or nine-win seasons in recent years, but none have been able to sustain it over time like Gordon or Johnson.

Aside from Gordon, Johnson, Martin and Stewart - four sure-fire hall of famers - today's top drivers all have 11 to 22 career wins.

They include: Kurt Busch (22 wins), Jeff Burton (21), Kyle Busch (21), Kenseth (20), Edwards (19), Earnhardt Jr. (18), Biffle (16) Hamlin (16), Harvick (16), Newman (14) and Kahne (11).

Are those hall of fame-worthy numbers? If not, what is the standard now and what will it be when those drivers are nominated for the hall?

Those numbers match the career totals of such former stars as Ricky Rudd, Terry Labonte, Benny Parsons, Buddy Baker, Geoff Bodine, Harry Gant, Neil Bonnett and Curtis Turner.

That may not be elite company, but it's not too shabby either. But is it good enough to get into the hall of fame? Time will tell.

Some of today's stars likely will reach 30 career victories, with Kyle Busch, Edwards and Hamlin having the best chance because of their age (26-31).

Will any reach 40?

Busch, Edwards and Hamlin have a shot. But unless the others suddenly put together a surprisingly huge season (10 wins or more), most probably will not.

Are the days of a driver dominating a three- or four-year stretch, or a whole decade, like Gordon and Johnson did, a thing of the past?

Can Busch, Edwards, Hamlin or someone else (perhaps Kahne once he arrives at Hendrick Motorsports) hit a hot streak and push their victory totals toward the 40 or 50 mark?

Or is 20 (wins) the new 50?

If it is, then Kenseth's win last week at Dover may be more significant than we think.

Miami Heat-Chicago Bulls: Udonis Haslem Could Be the Key to a Heat Run

What?  An article about a player other than Dwayne Wade or LeBron James

I bet you would think it would be about Chris Bosh then.

Nope.  It's about Udonis Haslem, the hero of Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals.  While LeBron James carried the team to victory, his team may have been put into that position by the shocking play of Haslem.

His 13 points and five rebounds don't tell the whole story.  He gave the Heat an energy that has been missing outside of the Big Three all season long.  He was rebounding, using active hands on defense, getting assists (two), running the floor, cutting to the basket and putting himself in position to be a factor on the court.

Last year, Haslem averaged 9.9 points and eight rebounds per game.  If he can come anywhere near those numbers again, his presence will be felt in the series.

What makes this so shocking is that he has obviously been hurt all year long.  Mike Miller still doesn't look right after his injury.  He is so scared to shoot that he passes up wide open looks that he would have knocked down before.

Besides Haslem, the bench only produced FOUR points—two from Miller and two from Jamaal Magloire, who really shouldn't be on the floor.

James Jones, who has been such a critical part of the Heat's late season successes, has disappeared, and the other players have zero offensive ability.

While Miller has been a big help rebounding, and has pretty good energy (when he isn't avoiding taking the three point shot, which is what he was brought to Miami for), Haslem brings a whole new level of intensity to the games.

While I am not foolish enough to believe Haslem has the offensive skill set to really win a game for his team (and who needs it, with James and Wade on the same team), but his energy and enthusiasm will go a long way in continuing to make the Heat competitive against the Bulls

Welcome back, Udonis!

NBA Draft 2011: How Will New York Knicks Improve Through the Draft?

NBA Draft 2011: How Will New York Knicks Improve Through the Draft?

There is no question the Knicks must get deeper if they want to be contenders next season, considering they have enough star power for three teams.

New York will need an inside presence, a player with some size and strength in the paint, someone to play alongside Amar'e Stoudemire and do the dirty work he doesn't.

New York traded nearly half of its team away in February for Carmelo Anthony and the effects were obvious in its first round match up with Boston last month.

The Knicks couldn't get scoring from anywhere but Stoudemire and Anthony it seemed and when Billups went down they stood absolutely no chance.

New York should look for a talented forward or center in this June's draft, perhaps Markieff Morris if he slips to them at no. 17.

Philadelphia Eagles: 5 Undrafted Free Agents the Team Could Target

Doc: Timing of trade a mistake

ESPN Boston
"I would wait until after the year was over. I'll put it that way," Rivers told Boston sports radio WEEI (850 AM). "I do think Jeff Green has a chance to be a starter for us in the future and a hell of a basketball player, and [Nenad] Krstic can help, but making that trade at the time we made that trade, that made it very tough for us. And not only that, we added other pieces as well that we tried to fit in, so it was just a lot of moving parts to a team that the advantage that we had was that we had continuity, everybody else was new. Chicago was new and the Heat were new. They couldn't fall back on what we could fall back on with our starting five, and once we made that trade, we took that advantage away."
Well there you have it. Finally one of the Celtics decision makers admits the trade didn't work. I always knew that Doc was being a good soldier having Danny's back publicly defending the trade. People complain that we're s...

Euorpean Ryder Cup Committee Plays It Safe, Headed to France

It was announced by the European Ryder Cup committee that the 2018 Ryder Cup will be played in shadow of the Eiffel Tower, as opposed to within the much larger golf shadow of Seve Ballesteros.

Spain was in the running to host the biannual event, along with Germany, Portugal and the Netherlands, but the committee saw fit to take one of the most popular events in the sport to France.

Of the selection of the Le Golf National course near Paris, George O'Grady, chief executive of the European Tour, said, "We're leaving nothing to chance on building a new course. You could say, in that sense, we've gone for the certainty," according to USA Today.

You see, if Spain (as well as Germany or Portugal) had been chosen, they would have had to begin construction of the golf course now. Only France and the Netherlands had already built courses as part of their bid submission.

So, the European Tour played it safe, and by doing so, provided a shining example of how they simply did not understand the greatness of their own Spanish legend.

It's not hard to imagine Seve, if he were alive, pulling himself from his deathbed to call the European Tour and blast them for having the nerve not to pick Spain, even without a course in place.

Playing it safe certainly wasn't the way Ballesteros played the game, and it wasn't the way he won five majors. It wasn't the way he, along with a few other Hall of Famers, converted the Ryder Cup from a three-day laugh-a-thon dominated by the Americans, into one of the most dramatic events in golf.

Without Seve, the Ryder Cup might never have been as popular as it is. There would have never been a "Spanish Armada" of golf if Seve had not been around to mentor Spanish players like Jose Maria Olazabal and Sergio Garcia.

Not to take anything away from the grand tradition of French golfers throughout history, but even their most famous player, Jean Van de Veld, is famous because he went for it when he had no reason to do so!

The European Tour has said they may change their logo to incorporate the image of the iconic Spanish player. That announcement was made before they announced their selection of France as the site for the 2018 Ryder Cup.

One has to question the timing of this announcement. If they were so sure they had made the proper selection, why did the committee seek to temper criticism of what they knew would be a very unpopular pick?

The Ryder Cup owes this man his day in the sun as soon as it can be made to happen. What better way to honor the memory of one of the finest players in Ryder Cup history, in golf history, than to take the event to the nation of his birth?

It's all very simple. The European Ryder Cup committee had a choice. They could either lay up or they could go for the green.

Way to play it safe.

Arsenal Star Set For 30m Summer Switch

PFA nominee Samir Nasri is a 30million target for German giants Bayern Munich. The NOTW reports that Bayern are plotting a 30m raid on the French winger, who has been identified as a replacement for the controversial Franck Ribery.
Ribery has had a difficult season of the field and has been tipped to find a new club in the summer. With only a year left on his contract and discussions on hold, Bayern are set to take full advantage of Nasri?s stumbling contract discussions and are preparing a bid for the French international.
Discussions are yet to take place and a German source said ?Bayern are thinking big, as their interest in a number of English-based players has shown.?
Wenger is desperate to hold onto the 23-year old; with a summer of rebuilding planned, Arsenal cannot afford to lose the midfielder.

Vince Young and the Seahawks Are Not A Good Fit

Vince Young is going to be looking for a new team to play for in 2011 and one team who would not be a good fit for Young would be the Seattle Seahawks. Sure, Pete Carroll is the master of getting players to toe the line and he needs a quarterback, I just have a feeling that Young would not be a good fit for the Seahawks. The Seahawks do not have the type of roster who would be able to keep a guy like Young in check if he gets out of control.
Vince Young to the Dolphins would be a better fit. They have a veteran roster who can help keep Young in check. Plus the Dolphins run more of a conservativestyle offense that would fit Young better.
The Seahawks could take a gamble and make a move on Young, but it would be a huge mistake. Matt Leinart to the Seahawks would make more sense. Leinart would be able to run the Seahawks offense better then Young.

Kentucky Wildcat Basketball: In The Case Of John Calipari, It's Safe To Assume

OK, let me preface this article by saying I was going to write it before any of the Tony Woods stuff came up, so don't think that Mr. Woods is what triggered this post. I get very few chances to crawl around inside the mind of John Calipari, because essentially it is a minefield for the amateur to play in. Coach Cal is always about three steps ahead of everyone else in his thinking, so as soon as you get it in your head you know what he is doing, he has already finished and moved on. Mrs. Calipari must be a saint to keep up with the pace he sets. Most of his players only have to go through it for 3-4 years. She has been doing it a long time. Kudos Mrs. C.

So now, about what it is safe to assume. You can assume that with Coach Cal, anything, anytime, anywhere can happen, and usually does. So when it comes to recruiting, until further notice, if a kid is inside the Top 50. You can automatically assume he is a Calipari target. If he is inside the Top 100, it is a pretty safe bet...

Fiesta Bowl fined $1 million by BCS

The Fiesta Bowl, one of the five BCS bowls, has jumped a major hurdle, after it was revealed that it will remain a part of the BCS, but will have to pay a $1 million fine. The fine comes after it was revealed that the Fiesta Bowl reimbursed employees who gave $45,000 in campaign contributions, as well as inappropriate spending by then-CEO and President John Junker.

Atlanta Thrashers Could Be Moving To Winnipeg

In recent years, there has been angst over Canada losing most of its NHL teams. But there is a chance that one squad could be headed back to the Great White North.
According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Atlanta Thrashers could be sold to True North Sports and Entertainment who would likely move the team to Winnipeg.
Right now, nothing is set in stone since it is uncertain whether the league has given Atlanta Spirit, LLC – the Thrashers current owners – permission to negotiate with True North. Previously, the team had been seeking a buyer who would be interested in keeping the team in Atlanta, but so far no one has emerged.
For True North, this is their second attempt at acquiring an NHL team. The group, who currently owns the AHL’s Manitoba Moose, tried to purchase the Phoenix Coyotes and return them to their city of origin. However the NHL stepped in earlier this month and passed a resolution that will keep the Coyotes in Phoenix for at least anothe...

Time for Cubs to Send Colvin to Minors

Colvin and Starlin
WhenTyler Colvin came up for the Chicago Cubs he showed a great deal of promise during his 2010 rookie season. He smacked 20 homers in sporadic duty and showed the versatility to play all over the outfield. The future seemed bright for the young Cub as he entered the 2011 season at just 25 and fully recovered from last year?s horrific lung injury. Unfortunately, things haven?t gone well for Colvin so far this season. As I type, he?s hitting just .121 in 64 plate appearances. Aside from a game winning hit a few weeks ago, his impact has been minimal.
With Fukudome starring as the world?s highest paid singles slapper andMarlon Byrd and Soriano locked up long term, there still isn?t a regular spot in the lineup for Colvin. Mike Quade has struggled to set a consistent lineup, and the constant shuffling of the deck hasn?t solved the club?s offensive woes. He has even started infielder Jeff Baker in right field against ...
