Bowyer, Gordon going opposite ways
He qualified 13th, and he and his Hendrick Motorsports team seemed fairly happy with their car in the two practices Saturday at the track.
Then in the race, he really searched and struggled most of the night. He ended up with an 18th-place finish. That kind of just wiped out, points-wise, those three awesome finishes he had in a row since that bad finish at Chicagoland Speedway.
Now with five down and five to go, he finds himself 50 points out of the lead, ninth in the points. That's way too big of a mountain to climb.
Clint Bowyer is the inspiration for drivers deeper in the Chase for the Sprint Cup because he headed into the Charlotte race 40 points out and he chopped 12 points off with his win Saturday night. He's now 28 back and in fourth place. But, for example, look right now at Martin Truex Jr., who is seventh and 49 points out. That's more than a full race.
So not only is he more than a full race out, he

Acura PJ Hairston Was Driving 93MPH Belongs To Girlfriend (Photos)
North Carolina fans can take a slight sigh of relief?
We reported earlier that UNC guard PJHairstonwas suspended from the Tar Heel basketball team after being citedfor wreck-less driving Sunday, but the question in the back of many fans? minds was if the 2008 Acurathat Hairstonwas driving was also tied to Haydn ?Fats? Thomas, the convicted felon that was linked to at least two other rental cars used by PJ.
The Big Leadis reporting that the car Hairstonwas driving belonged to his girlfriend Randi Lee Furr, of Charlotte. According to the citation PJwas clocked going 93pmh and was weaving in and out of traffic. He told the officer he:

Assessing Rodney Stuckey?s future with the Detroit Pistons
Rodney Stuckey and the Detroit Pistons have had an interesting ride the past six seasons. After a promising first few years in Mo-town, Stuckey was awarded an egregious 3-year, $25 million deal, leaving many shaking their heads. It seemed as if Joe Dumars was handing over the franchises? keys to the young combo guard when he clearly wasn?t ready for it.
And he wasn?t.
Since signing the contract, Stuckey hasn?t lived up to expectations. After starting the majority of games early in his career, this past season Stuckey spent most of his time coming off the Pistons bench.
No player who makes $8.5 million a year should be coming off your bench.
But, to be fair, Stuckey hasn?t had any stability. Stuckey is already on his fourth new head coach and has been a pawn in a slew of different line-up changes over the past six seasons. It?s hard for any young player to find their game when the pieces around him are constantly changing.
Although Stuckey has und

Mirka Federer Still Gives Tennis World Reasons to Envy Roger Federer (Photos)
Mirka Federer not only serves as wife to one of the sport?s most elite players, but she?s also the mother of their twin girls and the rock in her husband?s career. A former player herself, the two met at the Olympics in 2000 and were married nine years later.
Even after Mirka retired in 2002, she still stood beside her husband as he climbed the ranks, and earlier this year, when The Tennis Space ranked the top ?women behind the men,? it?s no surprise that Mirka was No. 1.

Detroit Pistons add Italian League MVP ?Gigi?
Earlier this month the Detroit Pistons agreed to a two-year, $3.75 million contract with 25-year-old Italian League MVP Luigi ?Gigi? Datome. Datome, who played for Virtus Roma last season, is a 6-foot-8 small forward known for his perennial sharp-shooting from beyond the arc. Last season for Virtus Roma, Datome averaged 16.6 points and 5.8 rebounds. Datome shot a very productive 47 percent from the field and a blistering 41 percent from downtown and 92 percent from the charity stripe.
Datome has played professionally overseas since he was 15. Albeit his 10-years of professional experience, this will be his first year playing in the shark-infested waters of the NBA.
?I want to come here and show I deserve to be an NBA player,? Datome said. Datome has the swagger of a guy who?s itching to prove his ability at the highest level possible and has a perfect opportunity to showcase that talent with the Detroit Pistons.

Dale Jr. living a driver's nightmare
Finally, the pieces had come together. In his fifth season at Hendrick Motorsports, Earnhardt had blossomed under the direction of crew chief Steve Letarte. Earnhardt had led the point standings for the first time in eight years. After a four-season drought, he returned to Victory Lane. And for the second consecutive season, Earnhardt had earned a spot in the Chase for the Sprint Cup.
In 2012, Earnhardt finally had a legitimate shot at the championship -- until Sunday.
What appeared to be a relatively benign crash -- at least by Talladega Superspeedway standards -- compounded symptoms from an earlier accident Earnhardt experienced during a tire test at Kansas Speedway on Aug. 29.
On Wednesday, Earnhardt was diagnosed with a concussion. Consequently, he withdrew from the next two races on the Sprint Cup schedule -- Charlotte and Kansas.

Dallas Cowboys? Injury Bug Still Biting
Entering just the second week of training camp in Oxnard, the Cowboys continue to fall victim to the injury bug that hampered them all of the 2012 season.
The boys? lost 71 games by starters because of injuries last season, 51 of which were on the defensive side of the ball.
This offseason, Head Coach Jason Garrett made sure that his staff focused on methods to ensure player?s health. From analyzing the team?s strength and conditioning program to changing practice methods, Garrett was hopeful that the team found ways to keep everyone on the field for 2013.
However if the first week of training camp is any sign of what?s to come, the Cowboys could be facing another rough season injury-wise.
On the first day of training camp, defensive end Tyrone Crawford went down with a season ending torn achilles tendon. Crawford was expected to play a big role for Monte Kiffin?s defense this year, backing up DeMarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer.

SEC Football Assistant Coaches Who Will Become Head Coach Someday
When you have a gem as an assistant coach in the SEC, it's best to show them the money and hold on tight.
Great coaching staffs win championships. Just ask Nick Saban, who won a championship in 2003 with Will Muschamp as his defensive coordinator and Jimbo Fisher as his offensive coordinator.
Sometimes, the man underneath the head coach is just as responsible for success as the coach. In some teams' cases, recruiting is a tool for success. For instance, because of the efforts by Clarence McKinney and David Beaty at Texas A&M, Kevin Sumlin has plenty of skill players to plug into his scheme this season. There are plenty of toys for "Johnny Football" to play with.
With so many great assistant coaches in the best conference college football has to offer, it's only a matter of time before the best get offered a promotion as head coach somewhere. Here are the most likely candidates.

Liverpool Transfer Rumours: Analyzing What Roberto Soldado Would Bring to Reds
As Liverpool continue to work their way through the Luis Suarez saga, manager Brendan Rodgers must keep identifying potential replacements for the star striker.
One player capable of making an immediate impact is Roberto Soldado.
The Reds have added the Valencia striker to their target list should Suarez move to another club, according to the Telegraph. They would be in direct competition with Premier League rival Tottenham for his signature.
And with it looking increasingly likely that Suarez will leave Anfield this summer, Liverpool have turned their attention to Soldado - placing them in a straight shoot-out with Tottenham for the Spain international's signature.
Spurs have been linked with Soldado ever since the transfer window opened but have stalled over his £26 million asking price, despite sending technical director Franco Baldini over to Spain to iron out a deal.
Even though Liverpool have publicly insisted (via ESPN) that they have no plans to sell Suarez, that hasn't stopped the rumors and speculation from linking him to other clubs. The ongoing situation is starting to become a distraction as the Reds prepare for the new season.
Speaking at a press conference in Bangkok, where Liverpool are preparing for Sunday’s friendly against Thailand, [Ian] Ayre said: "It’s never been our intention to sell Luis. We've received 2 separate offers from Arsenal and rejected both."
Keeping Suarez in the fold is obviously the preferred scenario. He's a vital piece of the club's attack, and replacing him would be an uphill battle. Whether he ends up staying at Anfield remains unclear, however, and Liverpool needs to prepare in case he exits.
Soldado is an intriguing option.
The 28-year-old Spanish international ranked fifth in La Liga with 24 goals last season. The only players to finish ahead of him were Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Radamel Falcao and Alvaro Negredo. Select company to say the least.
Having such a high level of success in one of Europe's top leagues bodes well for a potential move to the Premier League. The veteran would be ready for the level of competition and physical nature of play without needing a transition phase.
The other positive from his time with Valencia is that he's learned what it's like to lead an attack. Often, players are secondary options for other squads and then are expected to take on a bigger role after a move. It can lead to disappointing results.
Soldado led the Valencia attack last season and never backed down from the pressure. He kept producing at a high level throughout the campaign.
At Liverpool, he would receive support from Daniel Sturridge, Iago Aspas and longtime Reds star Steven Gerrard, among others. But he'd still be expected to play a pivotal role on the attack, filling the void which would be left by Suarez.
Although he probably doesn't match the Uruguayan international's natural finishing ability, he's confident in front of goal, holds the ball well in the attacking third and has a good work rate.
The one thing Liverpool can't allow to happen is letting Suarez get away without landing a replacement before the transfer window closes. That's why it's so important for Rodgers to keep several strikers on the radar until the saga plays itself out.
Soldado should be near the top of his list.

Tebow ?horrendous? in camp's first day
The Patriots conducted their first training camp practice on Friday, and Tebow, operating at quarterback, didn't have the best outing, according to multiple reporters.
Tom Curran of Comcast SportsNet New England says that Tebow looked "horrendous," throwing a one-hop pass and an interception in back-to-back sequences.

To be fair, it wasn't all bad for the former Jets' punt protector.
Tebow caught some passes in drills and lined up with the running backs and receivers. The highlight of his morning came on a 40-yard run, which helped get the crowd "back on his side."

Any day now, any hour really, the anvil could drop on Peralta. The penalty for a first-time offender is a 50-game suspension. Peralta?s case is a bit more complex than the average bear.

Kings reach one-year deal with Trevor Lewis
Tuesday's announcement comes one day after Lewis was among the 48 players invited to Team USA's orientation camp in late August. Lewis, a restricted free agent, had been scheduled to go to arbitration on Aug. 2.
Lewis, 26, made 750,000 this past season, in which he appeared in all 48 games and recorded a career-high 14 points.
Team USA's camp will be Aug. 26-27 and among the other invitees are Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick and captain Dustin Brown. Officials from USA Hockey discussed the preliminary selections on a conference call Tuesday morning.
The final roster for the Sochi Olympics is expected to be announced in late December. Players will not be on the ice at the Team USA orientation camp because of the high cost of insurance, officials said.

2013 Fantasy Football Quarterback Rankings by Tier: The Elite
The 2013 crop of fantasy football quarterbacks is deeper than it has ever been. You can easily wait until the other 11 members of a 12-team fantasy league select their quarterback and still finish with a solid starting fantasy quarterback.
Even though there are quality options later in the draft, there are still some elite options that figure to put up big numbers on a more consistent basis.
Tom Brady, New England Patriots
Tom Brady lost 169 receptions, 1,837 yards and 11 touchdowns when Wes Welker went to Denver and Aaron Hernandez got arrested. Rob Gronkowski has 38 touchdowns in his three seasons, but his health remains a question mark.
Since 2007 Brady has thrown 187 touchdowns and just 45 interceptions. His arsenal doesn't appear as potent as it has in years past, but until he shows signs of a decline, it's hard not to rank him up there with the elite. Brady has thrown for 10,062 in the past two seasons.
Weather can be an issue for the Patriots, but they only have one home game during the fantasy playoffs (Weeks 14-16).
Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints
If you're impressed by Brady's passing totals over the past two seasons, how about 10,653 yards and 89 touchdowns for Drew Brees? Sure, he's thrown 33 interceptions in that span, but that's an afterthought when you're putting up record numbers like Brees.
He topped 300 yards 10 times last year and 13 in 2011. He has topped 4,300 yards in each of the past seven seasons. Brees has also thrown at least 33 touchdowns in the past five seasons. He's a model of consistency.
Sean Payton has returned from suspension, which should only help Brees continue his reign of dominance.
Peyton Manning, Denver Broncos
Eric Decker and Demaryius Thomas combined to catch 179 passes for 2,498 yards and 23 touchdowns last year. All they did this offseason was add Welker, who caught 118 passes for 1,354 yards and six touchdowns. Welker has topped 100 catches in five of the past six years. Peyton Manning has three elite options at receiver.
Like a fine wine, Manning is getting better with age. He has topped 4,500 yards in the last three seasons he has played. He did miss the 2011 season with a neck injury, but he returned last year with his second-highest passing (4,659) and touchdown (37) totals of his career. He threw for 300 yards nine times last year.
Denver plays at home in Weeks 14 and 15, which is a reason for pause. It's not enough to keep him out of the elite territory, though.
Cam Newton, Carolina Panthers
Cam Newton's numbers regressed last year, but it's hard to be upset about 3,869 passing yards, 741 rushing yards, 19 passing touchdowns and eight rushing touchdowns. His interception total decreased from 17 to 12, which offset some of the decline.
He only threw for 300 yards in three games last year, but he ran for 50 in seven. Newton's size (6'5", 245 pounds) alleviates some of the concerns associated with a running quarterback. The sky is the limit for Newton.
Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers
Aaron Rodgers continues to pile up the numbers. He threw for 4,295 yards and 39 touchdowns with just eight interceptions. That’s 84 touchdowns and 14 interceptions in the past two seasons.
Over the past five seasons Rodgers has averaged 4,266.4 passing yards, 279 rushing yards, 34 passing touchdowns and 3.6 rushing touchdowns. Rodgers averaged just 9.2 interceptions during that span. He's my top-ranked quarterback option.
Matt Ryan, Atlanta Falcons
While Manning has the best trio of receivers in the league, Matt Ryan has the best duo. Roddy White and Julio Jones combined for 171 catches for 2,549 yards and 17 touchdowns. Tony Gonzalez chipped in 93 catches for 930 yards and eight touchdowns.
The Falcons added Steven Jackson, who has averaged 45.2 receptions per season during his nine-year career. Jacquizz Rodgers caught 53 passes out of the backfield for the Falcons last year.
In other words, Ryan has plenty of firepower. He threw for 4,719 yards and 32 touchdowns last year.

Why Anderson Silva's Legacy Will Be on the Line in Chris Weidman Rematch
What entails a legacy?
For many, a legacy is what one remembers another by. For an athlete, it's how the fans will reflect on their career. More specifically, for an MMA fighter, a legacy is the legitimacy of their career.
More often than not, a fighter will say they aren't concerned about their legacy. They say they take it one fight at a time and for the most part are at peace with how their career wraps up. This is especially true if one were to retire with an outstanding record.
Take, for example, the man many consider to be the greatest MMA fighter of all-time, Anderson Silva. Silva has compiled a professional MMA record of 33-5 (16-1 UFC) and holds the record for the most consecutive title defenses with 10. In addition, he also holds the record of the longest winning streak in UFC history with 16.
Of course, both of those streaks ended on July 6 at UFC 162 when Silva let his guard down a little too much and Chris Weidman capitalized by knocking him out after a minute and 18 seconds of the second round.
Almost immediately, it appeared that talks of a rematch were already buzzing around, and within a week the date for Silva vs. Weidman II was set for December 28 at UFC 168 in Las Vegas.
We've seen what happens when Silva gets angry, he gets as locked-in and becomes more dominant than anybody in the sport. What we really haven't seen is how he responds after being humbled. My guess is that we're going to see the best performance of his career when he steps in with Weidman once again.
Although Silva is at the tail-end of his career, he still has a lot left in the tank. If he beats Weidman, there will no doubt be a Silva vs. Weidman III. He will first need to show fans on December 28 why so many consider him the greatest.
For those who aren't sold on Silva's legacy, it's because they don't feel as if he has faced the best fighters the sport has had to offer. That's why so many were hoping for him to steamroll Weidman and finally setup a fight with Jon Jones or Georges St-Pierre.
In an essence, it is reminiscent of how so many people discount boxing's Floyd Mayweather Jr's career. The difference here, however, is Silva doesn't appear to be dodging opponents like Mayweather—it's simply just the timing of the competition from within the UFC.
When one scrolls through the people Silva has beaten during his illustrious career, there are definitely wins against quality opponents that include:
- Rich Franklin (twice)
- Dan Henderson
- Forrest Griffin
- Chael Sonnen (twice)
- Vitor Belfort
- Yushin Okami
The problem for Silva is that fans compare the names he has beaten in 16 years of being a professional to those that Jon Jones has beaten in just five. The wins for Jones in those five years include:
- Mauricio "Shogun" Rua
- Quinton "Rampage" Jackson
- Lyoto Machida
- Rashad Evans
- Vitor Belfort
- Chael Sonnen
These six wins for Jones were actually his last six fights that have taken place in just the last two years. You can see how the argument for Jones having more competition than Silva can weigh heavily towards favoring Jones.
This is precisely why Siva's legacy is going to be on the line. He will forever be linked with Jones in every discussion about who had a better career. Should Silva lose, Jones is going to win the debate hands down. Especially considering Jones is just 25 years old and still evolving as a fighter. Of course, there is always time for Jones to stumble as well—that's just the nature of any sport.
Silva's legacy now relies on the success of him avenging his loss to Weidman and being dominant in winning his belt back. Will he ever have to face Jones or St-Pierre to truly cement himself as being the best ever? I'm not so sure of that. The fact is he has faced the best opponents from within his division for quite some time now. And until recently, we didn't think he could be beaten.
It's rare when we see any athlete go out on top. Anderson Silva, although in the midst of a long-term fight contract, could step out at any time. Should he get knocked out again, I don't think many of us would be surprised to see him call it a career. Florida's Morrison arrested and suspended
Morrison was arrested early Sunday for barking at a police dog and resisting arrest. Both charges are misdemeanors.
Later Sunday, Gators coach Will Muschamp announced that Morrison would be held out of the opener against Toledo (Aug. 31) and the road game the next week against Miami.
''I'm extremely disappointed in Antonio Morrison's decision making,'' Muschamp said in a statement.
Morrison played in 13 games, with three starts as a freshman, and is expected to have a bigger role this season
The sophomore from Bolingbrook, Ill., also was arrested June 16 for allegedly punching a bouncer. He received deferred prosecution on the simple battery charged, a deal in which he was ordered to stay out of trouble for six months.
He was back in court Sunday, when a judge released him on his own recognizance.

5 SEC Football Players in Need of a Strong Fall Practice
Many teams around the SEC could use a healthy, strong showing by their most important players in the fall.
The offseason, as we all know, can be troublesome. LSU fans will quickly reference Jeremy Hill, while Texas A&M fans will point to their Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel. And no one is safe. Heck, just recently Vanderbilt had to kick four players off of the team for an alleged sexual crime.
On a brighter note, it's also a time for injured players to heal and focus on fall camp.
Because of offseason troubles, rehabilitating injuring or because of the overall importance of the player, here are the five SEC players who most need a strong fall practice.

Thomas Bjorn smashes camera with errant shot at British Open (Video)
Bjorn's tee shot landed in the rough on the side of the fairway, which led to the shot that broke the camera lens:

According to ESPN's Trey Wingo, that camera was worth $50,000. Wonder who's going to pay for that.
Bjorn finished that first hole with a double bogey, but seems to have shaken off the cobwebs as of this writing, as he has now pulled back to even par for the round after 11 holes.
H/T FTW.

Jeremy Lin Trade Would Be Best for All Parties
Many Houston Rockets fans love Jeremy Lin, but trading him this offseason would be the best move for him and the team. The acquisition of Dwight Howard pushes the Rockets further away from operating in Lin's comfort zones. ESPN's Bradford Doolittle examined the concept of moving Lin and Omer Asik earlier this month.
Signing Lin during the summer of 2012 made sense for the Houston Rockets. He had an eye-popping stretch with the New York Knicks that set off a bidding war of sorts for his services. During the process he attained an exceptional rise in popularity.
At only 23-years-old at the time, Lin seemed to be on the rise on the court and in regards to fame. The acquisition was designed to result in more wins and more butts in seats at the Toyota Center. The Rockets did return to the playoffs as an eighth seed, they won 45 games, but Lin's contributions probably only ranked fourth on the team in regards to overall value during the season.
Amongst Rockets players who played at least 40 games, Lin was tied with Omer Asik for sixth in PER (Player Efficiency Rating).
Player | Games | PER |
James Harden | 78 | 23.0 |
Greg Smith | 70 | 16.1 |
Patrick Patterson | 47 | 15.5 |
Patrick Beverley | 41 | 15.4 |
Chandler Parsons | 76 | 15.3 |
Omer Asik | 82 | 14.9 |
Jeremy Lin | 82 | 14.9 |
Still, it is clear to see why the Rockets fought hard to acquire Lin.
Financially speaking, this deal was part genius and part short-sighted gamble. Committing to a deal that is scheduled to pay Lin nearly $15 million in the final year of his three-year $25 million contract was risky to say the least.
It was the type of contract that handcuffed the New York Knicks' ability to retain him, but it also put an enormous amount of pressure on Lin to perform. While he didn't have a completely dreadful season (13.4 points and 6.1 assists), he certainly doesn't appear to be on the path to warrant such a rich deal—even for one year.
At 24 years old, Lin still has some room for improvement, but stylistically he'll never be the best fit at point guard for this Rockets team.
Lin needs the ball in his hands to be effective. He needs to have the freedom to pound the dribble, probe, attack or dish to cutters and shooters. He'll never be able to play that way with Harden and Dwight Howard.
Those two players demand the ball and their talents validate the offense running through them. The best point guard to play with Harden and Howard is a lead guard who excels playing off the ball—primarily as a spot-up shooter. That isn't Lin.
Take a look at his shot chart from the 2012-13 season. Yellow areas indicate Lin is comparable to league average from those spots, green is above average and red is below average:
While all of these shots didn't come as a spot-up shooter, Lin's jump shot is average at best and that isn't ideal for a guard playing with Howard and Harden.
If Lin struggles next season, you can almost bet he'll be blamed, blasted and criticized for being overpaid. Little thought will be given to the fact that he's playing in a system with players that don't give him the best chance to shine.
Moreover, a subpar or mediocre season will make Lin even harder to trade. When you consider the fact that his deal is due to nearly triple for the 2014-15 season, he'll become perhaps the most difficult expiring contract to trade in the NBA.
For the team and Lin's sake, the Rockets should aggressively seek to move him while his deal still has a glimmer of upside. If Houston waits too long, Lin's original deal with the team will come and go bearing little to no positive results for either party.
